[2021 Six Nations] England Squad

It's still hilarious whenever it happens.

He got stepped by Dave ******* Ward!
I'd enjoy that if it wasn't Dave Ward who stepped, never forgotten his kicking at an opponent in face with his studs in the championship. Unpleasant.

Quins players for you. Discombobulated by their own shirt colours

The last Tigers player to get a new England cap was Tom Youngs in 2012.
Pretty sad.

Ellis Genge maybe 50/50 since he was still technically a Bristol player on their books I think.
Youngs was 1346 and we're now up to 1420. Even Falcons and Wuss have had new caps in that time.

So in the space of one podcast, Mike Tindall has managed to berate the people criticising Englands performance after the Scotland game, laugh at the opinion that Farrell just isn't very good at the moment AND ask why England aren't getting the ball to Anthony Watson.

Slater not being capped is very surprising - I guess his best form came at a time when we had an embarrassment of riches in the 2nd row and there was no room for him
Also didn't help that Gatland hates Launchbury so there was one fewer spot on the Argentina tour that coincided with the Lions

Does that mean Freddie Burns played for England before Young's? That just doesn't seem right

Edit: he was at Gloucester, ignore me!

Kitchener and Slater both went on the NZ tour in 2014 (alongside Michael Paterson for those that completely forgot about him being talked as a potential england player) and IMO Slater should've played in the final test instead of Attwood

Wasn't he given mitigation because Mike Denbee was grabbing his gentleman's furniture at the time? No doubt he found that unpleasant too.

Zach Mercer confirmed he is moving to France because it seems Eddie Jones has zero interest. Whether you feel Mercer is good enough to be an international 8 or not, it's clear the damage being cause by Jones favourites, we are losing players with potential because he flat out refuses to accept alternatives.

How many other players are having similar thoughts?

Watching us lose a player ,not only for the England squad, but from the sport like Christian Wade, I hoped we'd learn. But you look at Sam Simmonds and Dombrandt not getting a squad place. We have Joe Simmonds, Marcus Smith, Jacob Umaga, even James Grayson all at times have played with form that should've earnt at least a chance to get into future squads. The likes of Sam James and Pier O'Conor, maybe wouldn't be top internationals, but should've been given chances while they were in top league form. It scares me looking at new players coming through into premiership teams and all I can think is how long before they find a different eligibility or just take there talents abroad.

Sorry but this all seems mental to me. EJ clearly doesn't see Mercer as an international 8, and frankly neither do I with Dombrandt, Simmonds, Earl, Wilson, Curry and the young Willis all playing better or similar rugby. As a result, EJ's made it clear that Mercer isn't part of his plans and so Mercer is rightly taking a bigger contract in France rather than getting paid less than he's worth in England in the hope that he might get another opportunity. Surely by not stringing Mercer along and making it clear that he's better off taking the contract, EJ's doing the right thing? It's a shame for Bath that Mercer's left but it's not EJ's job to keep players in Bath; it's to pick England squads, and he (IMO, rightly) doesn't see Mercer as a part of those squads.

It's also no good bringing up a load of players who might leave as a result of not being picked as none of them have left, so presumably they're still in contact with EJ.

Biggest pool of players in the world and the richest rugby nation so you'll always have a wealth of quality players to choose from, likewise you'll always have very good players who slip through the net as you've got so many.

The Mercer situation is correct. A player is told they're not going to get picked so has the opportunity to get paid more and possibly improve and is of an age a future selection for their country isn't out of the question. But youngsters looking at players that are leading at their position not even make the squad, must question their own futures.
