2021 British & Irish Lions Squad

It might not be obvious welsh bias but on what planet is beard better than gray? Or most other 6 nations locks. He's soooo bang average it's unbelievable.

I don't get Navidi either, how is a 6 a replacement for an out and out 7. Surely we should have called JVF or another open side up?

Think you're underestimating Beard there. He's a great lineout operator + one of the best in the business defending mauls.

His carrying game has improved and he's a reliable and hard working player in defense. His hands are also good for a lock of his size.

Navs should have been part of the original squad imo. He's probably a better 6 nowadays, but has always been a good option at 7. Curry and Watson are already great options at 7. Navidi will be on the bench for the tests imo, covers 6, 7 and 8.

Do agree that Gatland doesn't rate Johnny Gray. That's two Lions tours now he'a not picked him. Despite his work rate.

But yes, is there any reason why Gatland doesn't pick Kruis? He's back from Japan isn't he?
I thought Kruis was staying another year?

2nd rows were a bit different last time Gray wasn't picked over Kruis/Itoje/AWJ/Henderson/Lawes (although Cory Hill was called up). Launchburry didn't make the plane in a more ridiculous decision. Point being it was hard to argue for for his inclusion in that squad this time though...

Think so, but he's back in the UK atm - Japanese season has finished now and doesn't kick off again until the end of the year

Be a long shot, but he should definitely be in the mix IMO, especially with Ryan out of contention

All the talk about Kruis. Let's be perfectly clear, he's never in contention having played the past few years out in japan!

He was a great international player when he left, but that japanese league is a pretty big step-down still from other domestic comps, especially up front.

So wait a minute, we're considering players who haven't played international rugby and have been playing Japan and have only just got back to the UK? And people say the Beard decision is ridiculous. What planet are you guys living on?

Are we still moaning about Welsh bias even though that was all exposed as BS with this squad selection. You know, the fact that England were absolute trash and got their pants pulled down by all the home nations (and SA in the final obviously) but yet still he takes more English than any other nation. I mean, Johnny Hill FFS. Johnny Hill is a lot more controversial pick than Beard at least Beard has actually won stuff and is proven at international level as opposed to Hill who looked out of his depth.
Hill has played for the best premiership side in the last few years, won a Heineken cup, premiership and autumn nations cup hasn't he?

I dunno, maybe because Gatland doesn't want to as there's lots of really good players in all the home nations?
So Beards cool cause he a 6 nations and grand slam (but is a player so anonymous I couldn't pick him out in a line up) but all the other Welsh players not going shouldn't be picked along those lines....

How many games did he start in 2020 out of interest. Genuine question

Either way, not as much as Beard but we're carrying on like Beeard is a disgusting pick but Hill isn't so bad.
Dunno,
I don't like him and don't think he should've been named in the first place, but he's definitely been wildly successful in his career so far

Beard is cool because Gatland obviously values him. It's that simple really. If everyone stays fit he'a unlikely to start any tests so I don't get what everyone is getting their knickers in a twist about. I would've taken Gray but so what, it's not like there were loads of other people outside of Gray to choose from really.

Not really relevant who you could or couldn't pick out in the team to be honest. Not really sure what point you're trying to make with the last bit.

What's he done at the highest level?
He's new to international setup, but I'd argue his ceiling is a lot higher than Beard.
I'm not accusing welsh bias, my issue is you're picking a bang average international lock with no real point of difference (someone said one of the best around at defending mauls but that's an exaggeration for sure)
I don't really agree with Hill either but if you're asking who I'd rather have of the two, it would be hill for his freakish size at least
But its Beard over Jonny gray that irks me as much as hill over Gray, who's been a fabulous second row, in lineouts and engine /dirty work for longer than beard, and better than beard.
I would also take Kruis if it was an option ahead of him, you can say about 8 months in Japan but again a highly decorated premiership and European lock, who's won tons with England by being a brilliant lineout operator and locking out his scrum, as well as leading England in mauls for several years.
I just don't rate Beard as a Liom, because he's just about international quality for me
I'd also say, again, please don't use team stats to justify one player. You need more than that, because its others who have stood out ahead of him in that team comfortably
I wouldn't suggest taking George ford just because he reached a WC final, or Billy vunipola as they haven't been good enough.
Its an odd selection and a bit baffling for players like Gray who have been standouts in subpar teams for years

Except that this place has blown up with the announcement that Beard is a replacement but not so much when Hill (who hasn't achieved anywhere close to what Beard has at the top level) was named in the initial squad. Funny that.
