[2019 Six Nations] Wales v Ireland (16/03/2019)

Very odd slam this one, almost subdued for me. Partly because we haven't really played all that well along the way (defensively, yes, but overall lots to improve on), and today was with almost zero drama, so I found it a little difficult to get really excited.

I really think Ireland's decision not to close the roof really backfired. Wales managed an almost faultless wet weather performance, helped by the early try, and it was difficult conditions to play catch-up rugby.

Ireland were poor, probably the worst performances by Murray and Sexton I've seen. However I think some praise goes to the suffocating Welsh defense for that as well. As vs England, this Welsh side seems to be able to bring the worst out of the opposition. Gareth Davies puts massive pressure on the oppo 10, and the midfield cut off the options available to him. As v England, Sexton and Farrell were forced into kicking under huge pressure, and both made mistakes.

Welsh forwards were immense again today. For anyone questioning Tipuric, I think they need to pay more attention to just how much work he's getting through. He's been immense this tournament, and that's without having the opportunities to play to his main strengths. Maybe he isn't a jackling specialist, but in every other tight exchange he's been colossal, as has Navidi. Neither have had too much joy over the ball, but both are suffocating in defense, holding players up and slowing down opposition ruck ball. AWJ somehow just keeps churning out world class performances, he's an absolute warrior and involved in everything.

Interesting to see Anscombe continue with the kicking duties even after Biggar had come on so early. Obviously a decision by Gatland with an eye on the WC. Anscombe has been a reliable kicker for the Blues, but has occasionally struggled at international level, this would have given him the confidence going forward so that we can continue to go into big games without Biggar or Halfpenny and not worry about leaving points out on the field. Very shrewd decision from Gats imo.

Hopefully plenty more to come from this Welsh side. There's some real attacking threat in that backline that isn't being used enough. Is Howley still the weak link, or will we start to see more attack leading into the WC? If we do, we could be very real contenders, if not I'd still worry about our chances v NZ. Not scared of anyone else though! Not saying we'd beat everyone else, but certainly wouldn't go into the game worrying (like I used to v Aus and SA).

Well done boys, very proud.

25-7? Ireland lost 25-7? thats a pretty convincing win from Wales. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the score. Not sure of who is the number 2 team in the world right now. Probably England or Wales.

Wales I think.

England were barely the no.2 team on the pitch against an injury-ravaged Scotland in the second half earlier.

DullI I am paying the most attention as I love the back row. Ellis Jenkins > Tips. When the front 5 are even. Every time. But Ospreylia won't agree. As Tips is good at passing on the wing. He's the first man to go when Faletau is fit.

Congrats to Wales and the Welsh fans on the slam, very well done. I've read some fans saying that they wished that they'd played better. For me, winning is quite easily the most important thing (coming from a guy whose team came second), it's great when you play well and win but I'd take a scrappy win every time...although I'm maybe a bit old school on that front. Anyway, well done and enjoy.

I'd say the top 4 teams are pretty tight maybe 5 of you want to include South Africa. Any of them could be beat anyone else and I think all are capable of their off days (Wales have them it's just their oppenenents seam to have worse, that won't happen forever). Will be an interesting world cup. I don't think the ranking are telling us much of anything right now.

yep tips will go once Jenkins is fit, Faletau is world class so will step back into the BR, who to pick at 6 Navidi or Moriarty, that's a hard call..

IF wales had everyone fir and available its almost impossible to know who to leave out?

Id probably go with this side if fit for world cup big matches and biggar wouldnt make my match day team

liam north jon foxy scott williams adams anscombe rhys webb
faletau moriarty ellis jenkins awj cory hill rob evs, ken the sheriff , frances

reps
halfpenny, patchell, gareth davies , tipuric, beard, nicky smith, dee, samson

The reason Id add these is because, webb adds that world class service, him and davies are terrific scrum halves, but webb has that extra quality in his passing game
That half second speed helps the backs create space, scott williams in over parkes, how harsh is that? parkes is an awesome big match player, but so is scott and scott has that extra pace and power. back row faletau is the best 8 in the world imo....then its tipuric who is also world class versus ellis jenkins who is a magnificent and versatile flanker, ellis edges on his ball carrying and jackaling work. moriarty to 6. tips bench. hill at lock due to great mobility.

others to make up the 32 man squad....steff evans parkes, biggar, wainwright, aaron shingler, jake ball, wyn jones, ryan elias, dillon lewis

Sorry, but Ellis Jenkins hasn't overtaken Tipuric yet. Only area he's superior is over the ball. I'd have James Davies over Jenkins as well. Jenkins may well develop into the world class player he's capable of being, and a future Welsh captain, but he's suffered too many serious injuries to be in contention for this WC.

Honestly baffled by the Tipuric hate. Guys been a world class player for 8 years. He's a player capable of doing the dirty work and the sublime. He's keep his place in a fully fit back row alongside Faletau at 8 and a shoot-out between Shingler (who was superb pre injury, and would go a long way in sorting out our lineout), Moriarty, and Navidi at 6.

What a day... I was so nervous yesterday morning and hadn't really felt that way for any of the previous games this 6N. I woke up fully dressed and on the sofa... not joking I destroyed a 70cl bottle of Jameson's and there is like a single measure left in the litre bottle of Proper 12. Not sure when the last time was that I hit it that hard.

As many have said, we have played somewhat within ourselves this championship (hell, this run!) but it doesn't really matter... a slam is a thing to be cherished regardless. So proud of the team, the squad and the coaches etc. there is something special in that camp... you can feel it oozing out from them (listened to an Ugo Pod where he visited the camp prior to the 6N and it was apparent).

AWJ is just such a legend... I'm sure he tore is interior knee ligaments in about the 5th minute yesterday... but he 'run' it off... there was just no way he was coming off the field without the slam. I can't put into words how impressed by that I am. I hope his knee is ok... we need it (& him) for the World Cup. Arise Sir Alun Wyn...

Proper 12? I thought you were better than that!

First time I tried it... bloody horrible stuff! Think McGregor just bottled up a load of cheap burbon and called Irish whiskey. I won't be fooled again.
I'm fairly sure he bought a load of dregs from bushmills, he wanted them to put their name to it but they refused if murmurings I've heard are to be believed!

Well it wasn't great either way... sticking with Jameson's in future methinks.

Sorry but reading this Navidi wouldnt even make the squad? That is insane and you need committing! Guy was consistently the best backrow Wales had. He carries as well as moriarty but offers jackling and doesnt miss tackles like RM does. Also isnt a liability. Compared to Tips he offers the jackel and carrying but isnt as quick. Really dont get this comment sorry.

I agree with Shingler in the lineout but for him to play I really think there needs balance. I dont think you can have Tips, Jenkins or Cubby at 7 with Shingler at 6 as the backrow would be too light and not abrasive enough. Wales would lose what the currently have.

I feel if we play Shingler it has to be Navidi at 7 so you kind of narrow your options list. Ellis Jenkins MAY work but it would need to be seen how abrasive he can be after such an injury.

I do feel Jenkins is the future and can be Sam Warburton levels of ability.

Is Navidi a 6 or a 7? He has always been a 7 and been a make shift 6/8 at the Blues.

Why is Tips constantly cristised? He doesnt do anything wrong as such. I just wonder if the current gameplan simply doesnt fit his style? He is just boringly consistent. Dod he even miss a tackle this tournament?

I just dont rate Moriarty atm. I thought he was class during the lions season but atm he seems to go nowhere on carries and always looks like he is about to lose his head. He has also missed a lot of tackles.
