[2017 Rugby Championship] Round 1: Australia v New Zealand (19/08/2017)

Really hope Coles isnt gone for the series, will be interesting to see the Wallabies line up, later today.
Like always, I am hopeful and confident.
Hopeful of a Wobblies upset, and confident of an AB's win!
I'd hate to see Coles unable to play but I hope that Hansen doesn't play him. There's no point risking him, let him have a long off season to recuperate. His kind of quality won't be faulted by some time away.

Is there any match up player vs player that the All Blacks don't win. I guess Folau was McKenzie but other than that I'm struggling.

mckenzie vs folau. folau's better in the air. dMac creates a lot more opportunities for his team mates
hooper vs cane, i'd go cane here. muscles up better , far more physical and has a better understanding of the dark arts than hooper
kerevi vs crotty - kerevi has brawn but crotty's got brains. crotty on this one

wrap him up in cotton wool until the next world cup i say. i dont care that coles isnt playing. his health is far more important. its only rugby

Hansen said Coles isn't that bad and could've played this weekend... they're just being extra careful. I agree we should protect him as much as possible, but I think he should be ok to play from next week.

Bit surprised by Rona ahead of DHP, other than that pretty predictable. Expecting SBW to give Foley and Beale hell.

All Blacks Team's been named:
1. Moody
2. Taylor
3. Franks
4. Retallick
5. Whitelock
6. Squire
7. Cane
8. Read (c)
9. Smith
10. Barrett
11. Ioane
12. SBW
13. Crotty
14. Smith
15. McKenzie

16. Harris
17. Crockett
18. Tu'ungfasi
19. Romano
20. Savea
21. Perenara
22. Sopoaga
23. ALB

McKenzie at 15 is a big call but actually makes perfect sense to give him game time there before Smith's sabatical, but with Smith still on the pitch to help him out.

Romano over Barrett is both surprising and IMO disappointing, he's just such a boring player.

I assume Kaino must be injured?

why not start with Crotty at 2nd 5, ALB at centre and have SBW on the bench as Utility-back/impact player?

Pretty happy with the Wobblies team, not a fan of McMahon, and Speight with Rona on the wings isnt great, but with the injuries I guess Cheika's hand was forced. Folau, Beale and Foley will be the biggest risk to the AB's, if the boys with the little numbers can get them some go forward then their potential is potent. They will need to come out of the blocks firing and be accurate, intense and disciplined. Its a strong bench too, hopefully Cheika uses them wisely. Arnold, Coleman & Hannigan is a strong lineup too.

This is disgusting by the Aussie media. It's clearly no coincidence that they've released this info just as Smith's about to play against them. And to release the private messages between the two is just revolting. To mess with someone's personal life like this in order to gain an advantage on the pitch is despicable. Hoping it doesn't affect Aaron's performance too much.

What else did you expect from slime??

Trying to unnerve the AB's before the slughter happens...

Who released the messages? Seems like some gutter-level behaviour whoever it was.

Back to the game ... can't see Australia getting close to be honest, although I guess at home stranger things have happened. Although I think the ABs' bubble was burst to some degree in the Lions series, they'll be much stronger with certain players back from injury/suspension plus I think this Aus side is noticeably weaker than the Lions.

Its what media would have published in any country. High profile public figures who behave so badly and then lie about what happened deserve to be exposed and sanctioned. The consiracy theory about it somehow being publicised to give the Wobblies an advantage is delusional. If the Kiwi press had found out first they would have done exactly the same. If it had been a Wallaby player I have no doubt the Daily Mail would have published the same details. Maybe placing some personal responsibility on Aaron Smith would be better, rather than blaming others.

It looks as if the woman involved is the one who leaked all the details, hard to imagine how else they would have surfaced.

I like the All Black side and obviously it will worth watching just to see dmac get a proper run.

Interesting I said in the other thread one of my take hopes from the lions series is that we need to move on from Jerome Kaino as great as a player he has been and it kinda looks like that is happening... I also think we need to do the same with Crockett as well but it may take a bit more time to find a suitable loosehead. Squire is a ready made option at 6 with a good chunk of experience already. I also feel like Dagg is in a similar situation but maybe still has a role to play.

Only thing I see missing is a genuine big guy in the outside 3. No Savea is a good thing his form just isn't good enough but also no Naholo/Tamanivalu means we dont have that big ball carrying option that does come in handy... I know Ioane is no dwarf maybe we the balance is fine...

If the Aussies are finally going to narrow the gap, this is their big chance. The AB's are based on salaries, not form or ability. How many "Canes are in the starting XV - one, yet they are the only team who beat the Crusaders all year! We have the usual heap of guys from Auckland and Waikato (surprise, surprise) plus the guys Hansen inherited from Father Henry such as the two Otago Smiths and the most overpaid athlete in the world, SBW. Throw in Squires instead of playing both Ardea and Cane, bring in McKenzie who is great against lousy defence but did nothing against the stronger Super rugby teams, and cross your fingers.

Henry lost us two unloseable world cups and got knighted for it. Hansen somehow managed to draw a Lions series we should have won easily but will no doubt be knighted one day anyway. This Aussie team is as weak as any I have seen, and I live in Aussie and watch these guys week to week. However, give an Aussie a sniff of victory and they can upset anyone. If Hansen makes the same coaching errors he made versus the Lions I give the Wallabies a chance. Get Perenara and Ardea on the field for at least 40 minutes and I favour the AB's - if he sticks to his pattern I favour the Wallabies. No Laumape off the bench, so we get stuck with a SBW who has the lowest try scoring record in AB history for a player in his position, misses more tackles against the same criteria, and spends a lot of time on the field AWOL.

I was looking at some stats yesterday and Ioane's actually bigger than Naholo... he's a big boy! Probably not as powerful, but he's still developing.
