2016 Olympic Games, Rio

Poor guy is absolutely shattered obviously wanted the gold.

I am sure he did and was gutted like a Manx Kipper (the best in the world) yet still managed to thank the GB team behind the cyclists!! Not sure anyone else did that.......

Multiple Yellow jersey holder, green jersey winner, 2nd most stage wins in history in the TdF and now a cycling medal at the Olympics.....not a bad career considering all......

Well done Trott......can she win every event in this Omnium?!!
Nope she came 2nd in the scratch earlier....but yeah she's insanely good God know how much is cushion she'll have by the scratch.

I wondered as she is still only 8 points ahead after three events!

Think big kudos to Dave Brailsford who transformed British cycling and put it in place the back room team supply chain who have been and are brilliant..,......

The Cuban Greco-Roman wrestler is a beast, he can play rugby. 1,98 m and 130 kg

Still only women's team sprint we haven't medaled at least silver on the track. We decided not to compete let another country or three win some medals for a change

Aye British cycling has changed radically this millennium. It's done massive work towards the health of this country as well you can tell by the amount of people on roads.

If I didn't live a 10 minute walk to work I'd cycle to work again.

By my reckoning, the Isle of Man go second in the medals peer capita table, so love by the kiwis

Where does Phelps come? I mean he must earn more than some countries.

Here one thing that confuses me obviously Cav and the IOM compete under the GB flag. But I distinctly remember a Manx flag being flown in the London Olympic stadium. Anyone know why that was?

Phelps is something like 32 on the all time list isn't he?
Are you sure the Manx flag at London was official, not fan?

FWIW Sark are comfortably top of the per capita table, 1 medal per 600 people

yeah it was hung from rafters with all the nations flags. Sadly I just went through my photos of when I was in the stadium and I didn't take a picture of the section I think it was from where I was sat. As it was behind me to my right.

If memory serves me correctly it should be the section roughly where the finish line is.

Ofor course I'll could be completely wrong.

It would be a surprise as the only time that the athletes represent IOM is Commonwealth games which is when Manx flag is officially hung!

We do get everywhere though and there was s Manx flag on display on the second tier behind the medal ceremony for Cav! There is usually at least one or more in the mountains for the TdF too....

Peter Kennaugh - the first gold! May even have been the first medal although think a shooter did get one but may have been commonwealth!

Edit.....

Wikipedia.....

"Rower Sidney Swann and cyclist Peter Kennaugh are the only islanders to have won Olympic Games gold medals, while polo player Frederick Agnew Gill won a bronze medal in 1900 and cyclist Mark Cavendish won a silver in 2016. In the Olympic Games Manx athletes compete in Team GB."

Now check, who's taking bets on when the Toulouse owner will be running past him and throwing him a ball, seeing if he can catch???

I don't know Wayde's coach and this is only speculation but he is based close by and two coaches I worked with way back when (one being quite influetial in the Cape) both coached (one was specifically 400mH, the other sprints in general) me to take the back straigt easy(ish) and focus on conserving energy. I don't know if that is something that might be common or specific to the Cape area.

After seeing him beat Kirani James with such ease at world champs last year, I knew he would win Gold in Rio - but not massacre MJs record they way he did, not to mention from lane 8!

Fast facts Wayde:
- Smashed his PB by 0.45s (43.48s set at world champs Beijing last year)
- Smashed MJ by 0.15s (Record which stood for 17 years)
- Only athlete to do sub 10s in 100m, sub 20s in 200m & sub 44s in 400m
- He is Cheslin Kolbe's cousin (both from Kraaifontein)

If he can sub 43s at the world champs next year then he can be seen in the same light as Usain Bolt as a 'Next-Gen athlete' who revolutionized the benchmarks for their events.
