2014 Super Rugby: Chiefs v Blues (Round 13)

Is he miss judging the wind or is he typically not a great kicker?? That last box kick was rubbish as well!

He's normally a very good kicker - I'm not sure what is wrong with him tonight...

That loose forward battle that I was looking forward to, has been a little bit quiet, with exception of one run from Kaino ... at first glance, it doesn't look good for Piutau's All Black aspirations does it

Fantastic try for Tom Marshall. Could be game over for the Blues....

How many penalties they going to be allowed!

Blues are killing themselves with ball retention...

Finally the Chiefs get a yellow. Big chance for the Blues to strike now.

Visinia has looked electric tonight - he could be a bolter in the AB's squad (especially if Piutau's injury is serious..).

... Maybe, but I think Cory Jane will be the main beneficiary of Piutau's injury if it is serious

Wicked win by the Chiefs, looked almost back to there old selves. Just grafted out a good win and got the bonus point, great to see them hold the Blues scoreless in the last 5 to not let them take a bonus point out of the game, we needed the bonus point as we are only 9 points clear of the Crusaders and Highlanders and they have 2 games in hand each.

Gutted for Piutua, on form he should have been the starting fullback in the June tests, Jane should be the main benefactor of that injury.

Once again the Blues fail playing away from home.
Really gave them a chance for this game

Yeah, the Chiefs really put the pressure on when the Blues had the ball, and didn't allow them to play their natural game

... The Taranaki crowd really got behind the Chiefs too ... great to see the stadium so full

Jane may well find his way into the test 23 if Piutau's injury is serious. I was thinking more of the 35-man training squad. Visinia is very dangerous with ball in hands but also possesses the 'fullback' skills that the AB's selectors desire in their wings. It is probably a bit early for him, but personally I think he would be a better option than someone like Halai..

Anyways.... a good win for the Chiefs. I think the Blues probably looked the most dangerous of the two sides overall, but the Chiefs were far more clinical....

I agree that Visinia offers more in terms of diversity than Halai, however, they may go for that other type of wing that the All Blacks like ... the centre/winger ... I think Fekitoa's chances of selection just went up

A few thoughts.....

- It was good to see big Tameifuna scoring 2 tries. However I still feel the Chiefs really miss Afeaki...
- At this stage I think Latimer/Cane/Messam is the Chiefs best loose-forward trio.
- I thought Kerr-Barlow had a good match - he is effectively another flanker on defense.
- Anscombe probably had the better of Hickey, but was still solid rather than spectacular.
- Aki's been very quiet since his return.
- Nanai-Williams is not a centre. He's an excellent wing or fullback at this level, but lacks the physicality to be playing in the midfield.
- Sweeney is still handy enough on the wing.
- I thought Donnelly had a pretty good game for the Blues. I'm not a big fan, but he does complement Tuipolotu well.
- Kaino was the pick of the loose-forwards again. He is looking pretty comfortable at 8 too. Luatua and O'Connor were accurate, but perhaps a little quiet.
- Hall didn't have his best game. He wasn't that bad, but some of his kicking/passing was very inaccurate.
- Nonu again played well overall, but made some mistakes as the game went on (why did he kick the ball away with time up on the clock????)
- I thought Moala had a poor game. He started the season so well, but made a lot of mistakes this match. I would look at pairing Nonu and Ahki (who impressed off the bench) in the midfield for the Blues next match (with Moala competing with Li for a wing spot).
- Halai played well, and Visinia was outstanding in my opinion. He looks like a future All Black to me.
