2014 QBE Internationals [EOYT] England

Can we bloody forget the reffing of that match already? We don't agree with them, they don't agree with us, nobody seems inclined to change their opinion (possibly because the people importuning them to do so are implying that they're idiots), can we just drop it?

It was dropped. Nick even closed the thread.....then brought it up here. Lol!

I didn't bring it up. Read the thread.

It was being discussed and I asked it to be be dropped. I then get told that it was solely New Zealander's fault the last thread was closed, which is simply not entirely the case. 100% agree with Peat.

Sheesh.

Kyle in training - obviously over his illness otherwise he'd still be quarantined.

Is it just me or did others think that picture makes it look like Brown has a funny mini mohican thing going on?

Haha yeah.

It looks like the longest line in the world before being called into the principals office.

Roko went well.

Defensively solid against a guy who had up until Saturday averaged 2 tries per game against us.
He didn't really get a chance to stretch his legs, this is nothing new, and probably wont start to happen until we start selecting players at 10, 12 and 13 that have shown that they can run an effective backline without complete and utter forward dominance. There is no point in just sticking 1 player capable of distributing with any degree of finesse in the middle of 2 players who have consistently shown that they are generally lackluster in attack at international level.

Most people feel that George Ford would go a long way in helping this issue, but he's too small apparently... Aaron Cruden isn't fit to play for England going by that argument.
I've said this before, but if we want to use our wingers properly, then we need to give them more to do. In international rugby, play will break down long before you're able to pull off a backline move that reaches the winger even with attack-minded 10/12/13s.

May's try is a beautiful example of what I have been saying: he's not done too much in attack whilst stuck out, isolated on his wing. For that backline move, May attacked the 13 channel with Eastmond outside and you saw the result. The reason I have always been a fan of May when others haven't, is that Gloucester have used him creatively and have shown how talented a runner of the ball he is, as long as you don't shackle him. England shackle him and wonder why he doesn't produce the same results and fans wonder why he is picked. After his try, I thought that England would kick on and let him pop up all over the backline, but it never happened. Imagine a Shane Williams who wasn't allowed to roam. He would have been a fraction of the player he was.

It's not surprised me one bit that Roko looked solid but didn't do much in attack. It's a pattern that has manifested itself over every winger under the Lancaster tenure. We need to change the way we use our wingers; it is the biggest failing of Lancaster's England imo.

It would also probably benefit our wingers if we had a player with an eye for the grubber/cross-field/chip/kick into space.

Who's that to the left of Brown?
BMW on the top suggests a couple of age grade players?

Edit: Think the guy closest to Brown might be Jack Walker, the Yorkshire Carnegie hooker.

BMW on the stash would indeed indicate an age grade player. If it is his then Peat has been scarily on the money about how 'that's young hooker at Leeds' might be a future prospect...

Just re Yarde. He has been fairly gash for Quins until the European games, where he started to look a bit sharper. Some fans were a bit unkind and said he was just being lazy. IMO if was more the transition to a new club. I'd back him to start over Watson, although I'm not going to weep of it's the other way around.

It's not just the wingers though, j'nuh... Kyle and Roko got the ball 8 times each (with 2 of Kyle's possessions in the pocket for him to kick) and May 7.

anyone seen this?

Reports in the Guardian over the weekend suggest they received a number of complaints ascertaining to homophobic abuse during the All Blacks game.

The report relates to abuse aimed at openly gay referee Nigel Owens during the game after a number of fans criticised a number of contentious decisions.

The Guardian reported that they received a number of letters following the match, including some about homophobic abuse directed at Owens.

"As a lifelong rugby fan, a straight man in his 60s, I could not believe that a bunch of men half my age watching a rugby match in the 21st century could be capable of hurling such nasty, foul-mouthed, racist, homophobic abuse at an openly gay match official," Keith Wilson of South Yorkshire wrote to the Guardian.

"My equally disgusted son is in his 30s but next to him, hearing this vitriol, was a little boy. I felt ashamed."

Wilson suggested that "if it had been a football match they'd have been thrown out"

That last sentence makes me raise my eyebrows a little.

I don't have a problem with singing 'Swing Low' during the haka, but booing is just...pathetic really. But the homophobic stuff is just abhorrent, if this turns out to be proved then they should ban fans. England should play in an empty stadium if there is homophobic/Xenophobic abuse, it happens in football and rugby gets no exception

the issue i have here is did he report it or not, says he spoke to the men, but did he speak to the steward so they could take action?

His letter doesn't seem to say he did (unless i'm missing it). the Kiwi complaining about the booing can do one - at least our fans haven't bottle players leaving the pitch.

Yep, the Owens thing made Rugby headlines here in Nz too. Very unfortunate, and I can only hope it's not something he continuously has to deal with at games.

Don't personally have a problem with the fans singing swing low or booing during the haka. That's their business, not mine. Different cultures and different venues respond in a number of ways, none surprise me any more. Kind of fun when theres a reaction of some kind actually.

Yeh it doesn't sound like it prob thought he could handle the situation after the game. ( which would have been to late).

Can you give me an example of that happening for homophobic abuse? I mean, not saying it shouldn't happen, but I can very readily think of homophobic chants that have been going on for about as long as I've been alive with nary an eyebrow raised at the higher levels.

I'm happy for Rugby to try and hold itself to a higher standard, more than happy.

I think swing low over the haka is fine, it's supposed to be a challenge and to get the ABs fired up so don't see why the home team can't answer the challenge. Other sides have got right in the face of the haka so if that's acceptable, a bit of singing should be too. I'm not a fan of booing the haka though and the constant booing by the English crowd wound me up. I hated it when other countries consistantly booed everything England did and now we are doing it, I hate it. Homophobic comments have no place and I bet they wouldn't have made them if they knew Nigel Owens fear about being a homosexual in rugby almost drove him to take his own life.

Bayern Munich had a partial stadium ban, which wasn't sufficent IMO.
