[2014 Mid-Year Tests] Australia

http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/dwyers-view-my-wallabies-squad/

Old Bob Dwyer's view on who he would pick in the Wallaby squad; although this article is almost a month old. Interesting that he he also does not rate Ben Alexander's scrumming. He also advocates dropping Robinson, Horwill, Higginbotham, Kepu.

Would be good to hear what Wallaby fans think of this.

I'm not exactly a Wallabies fan, but I hope it's ok if I comment :)

I don't think Dwyer's views should be taken too seriously. This piece was written to provoke a bit of controversy - I don't think he seriously believes this is the best squad available. Indeed a few days latter he apparently stated some of his non-selections were "intended to needle established players into lifting their games" (how exactly this was going to work I'm not sure!). He does make a few good points. Higginbotham and Kepu do spend a lot of time walking, Cooper would be bloody hard to play outside, and Luke Jones certainly deserves a Wallabies call-up. However he doesn't seem aware that David Pocock is injured, Cam Crawford has been rubbish this season, Speight is ineligible until latter in the season, and Woodward is a ineligible for another two years! I'm not really sure how much rugby he actually watches....

I wouldn't want Higganbotham anywhere near my team, personally...

Why not? He looks great running on the wing. He really has no down-side...... apart from the fact he spends a lot of the game walking, spends the rest of the time standing on the wing, doesn't hit breakdowns, gets penalized 2-3 times a game, and is a bit of a thug. He can chip-kick though. That's a cool skill.....

Damn the Wallabies, and Cooper in particular, were on form the last time we saw em..

Love the Wallabies.

Dwyer does seem to have it in for Scott Higginbotham big time. I have not seen enough of the guy to comment on him.

I just spotted a more updated article on Green and Gold from old Bob. Anyone who says Aussies don't whinge just need to read old Bob's articles.;O).

Dwyer is a nut case and part of why GAGR has gone down the drain.

Not defending Higgs though I like him but the concerns raised so far are quite valid, theres no need for Higgs in your team if you have Hooper IMO he provides the running game and the break down work, have fardy on the other flank and that force 8 I can't think of at the back.

What did you guys think of Leroy Houston when he was playing for the Reds?

Yes, ever since Scott Allen left GAGR; he did some excellent pieces for them during the Lions series. I learnt a lot about what loose head props were trying to do and the angling in of tight head props; never having played in the front row myself. But he's gone over to ROAR, so nip into both GAGR and ROAR to get the Aussie viewpoint on RU.

Scott Allens pieces for the Roar is excellent... GAGR has really gone to pot.

He was pretty good if I recall correctly. Not Wallaby standard but a big powerful loose forward who ran and tackled hard.

JOC would be a great asset for the Reds as they don't really have any really good outside backs at the moment but if he's going to come in and disrupt the Reds and Wallabies culture then he can get lost. The Wallabies and the Reds could definitely benefit from him playing but the Wallabies are strarting to build a positive team culture without him so McKenzie might not want him.

Yea Allen is the best Aussie pundit by far and the stuff he did in the lead up the lions was top notch.

so it's final, huh, Quade Cooper officially ruled out of the June internationals...<_<

Hope to see Foley get a start at 10 I like the way he plays flat on the gain line. Cooper being out does change things a bit firstly theres no reason for Genia to be picked anymore so it leaves Link with the choice of the Tah's half-backs or the brumbies ones. I'd probable prefer the Tah's but I can easily see White-Toomua. However if he goes with Foley should he put Kurtley in at 12 or go with Toomua? All very interesting to see where they go.

He was always going to miss the June internationals after the initial diagnosis of a grade 3 separation of the shoulder. That kind of injury was never going to heal for him to be ready and match fit for any of the June tests. The MRI scan was just to confirm whether he needed surgery and now he does he'll be out until mid September; which at least means he may be available for some of the RC matches.

aaah, I dunno, maybe they were just saying this to make it suspenseful and blurry and all and then BAM ! He comes storming out of the crowd at the 56th minute and runs in a try after stealing the ball from the French scrum.
