2014 Commonwealth Games 7's (26&27/07/14)

Wales blew that match. They completely butchered a try with only a minute left which would have sealed it for them, then allowed Australia to march 100m up the field and score.

Yeah, that three on one was embarassing. I'm guessing wozzizface (didnt notice who it was) is not going to be very popular in the dressing room atm.

Ridiculous yellow card in the England v Samoa game.

Very disappointing from England - still one of the most inconsistent sides on the circuit.

We need a better backup to Mitchell, and some better forwards.

Yeah, incosistency is a huge problem for England.
Hope Samoa go on to win gold.

Saw a clip of the fluffed wales try! Absolutely insane - they did the same vs Samoa when Samoa were down to 6, yesterday, but managed to sling it wide quickly afterwards and go over.

Hi Guys, Can somebody help me here. About 1.20 to go in the England - Samoa game, maul is formed 2 from each wrestling for the ball Samoan 7 comes in to it from Englands side ref blows up says ball held Samoa scrum. Why was the Samoan 7 not offside as I recall the ref had called maul and he was in the way of an England player coming in to support ( although took him an age to get there)

Don't recall the incident, but I assume the Samoan was adjudged to have come from the back of the maul as, there's no real way to block him with just 2 men. The ref's are usually sh*t hot on any kind of spoiling play in sevens, so doubt it was missed.

that awkward moment when Barbados qualify and Northern Ireland don't...

Got me wondering what is the stance for northern irish players for the Olympics, do we play for GB or Ireland or is it an optional thing?

I don't think it will matter - unless Ireland enter a team into the world series they aren't going to qualify for it, and without an Irish team to play for GB isn't going to select non specialist players.

Yet another final for NZ.

Now for the Boks v Somoa. Shame Fiji are suspended from the Commonwealth, otherwise they would be in there contending for the ***le.

Anyone else been impressed by Josh Petero? Scored some lovely tries off the step for the Cook Islands

Day 2 for Canada went exactly as I thought it would a cake walk to the Bowl. At least we salvaged as much as we could but finishing 9th still stings. Hopefully we can sort out the coaching now that Geraint John has left for Oz. Crowley did OK filling in but XV's has to be his priority.

I am so sick of watching Wales lose in the last minute... Happened so many times over the last few seasons to the main side, and now it apparently affects the 7's too!

Not sure whether we switch off or just believe we are going to lose the game, but it's so frustrating.

Poor game from NZ in the final.

Every time I watch Sevens I can't get over the fact that it's not a very respectable sport. It's basically tossing the ball around until one player manages to step around a defender. The rucks and scrums aren't even policed.

Thought it was a great tournament, some incredibly exciting games. (could have done without a couple of the last minute tries though!)
Boks have been the best team, so good to see them rewarded, and end one of the longest winning runs in sport.
Fiji should be in the Olympic 7's competition, and interesting to see what progress teams like USA make before it. Can't wait.

Congratulations to South Africa. Not only were they clearly the best team in the final, but also clearly the best side all tournament.

NZ in contrast were very disappointing. We never seemed to get into gear all tournament, and we were pretty woeful in the final. I have never seen an NZ side make so many basic errors, and we looked lost in attack (though a lot of credit should go to the SA defense). I felt the score in the final really flattered us - the only reason it was so close was because the ref let us get away with a huge amount of illegal play at the breakdown (Forbes spent the whole match charging into the breakdown from the side). If we had won that final I would have been delighted, but the best side certainly would not have won....

Agree completely. NZ don't appear to have any 'edge of your seats' flair players at the moment, just play an extremely well coached, clinical game. SA have so many speedsters, which combined with their normal power players makes for a pretty devastating sevens setup.

I agree we don't have a lot of flair players (and the few we have - the likes of Stowers and Kaka - were very quiet). However that hasn't really been an issue for us during the world series as we've (convincingly) won the majority of the tournaments over the 2nd half of the series with almost this exact side. The problem I felt this tournament was our unforced error rate. If you are going to player a more 'conservative' style of 7s involving pressuring the opposition with numerous phases you really need to be able to hold onto the ball! We weren't able to do this in the final (and in the tournament in general) which I felt was a bigger issue than our lack of strike power.
