2014 Canadian Rugby Championship and General Canadian Rugby Chat.

I asked him on Twitter, I wonder if he'll respond.

In other more positive news, Matt Evans is making his return to the Cornish lineup after being injured for seemingly forever. He's got himself a spot on the bench against London Scottish tomorrow. Scottish is a good team so should be good for him. Also Braid is listed as Inside Center again for Scottish. At least he's getting quality playing time.

Ya, I'm @TheBeerfalo on there. I'm not anyone important nor do I have much going on so I don't use it much outside of keeping tabs on bands/sports. I don't really expect him to answer some random guy from Canada but you never know until you ask.

Carpenter retweeted and responded to me. I feel all fuzzy inside now haha. Says it's a three month recovery process which should put him back around April for an end of season run with the Pirates. This has made me more happy than I thought it would haha.

Thankfully that's not too long. Most of the Canadian guys are really cool, everyone I've tweeted over the years has gotten back to me. I had a lengthy conversation with Al Charron a while back on there to. If anyone wasn't going to get back to you it would almost certainly be Cudmore, I think the rest of the guys are just glad they have fans back here LOL. Maybe Sinclair or Mackenzie might not due to a higher number of followers but I have seen them get back to fans before.

Apparently Hassler's recovery is going fairly well and he is starting to train again. Hopes to be back for Canada in the summer.

Apparently Hassler's recovery is going fairly well and he is starting to train again. Hopes to be back for Canada in the summer.

He has been missed at the Ospreys. Walker constantly injured, Dirksen not where he once was, and Natoga not really Pro12 level.
Glad he will be in Wales for a few more years!

Does anyone know how much the Aviva A League teams actually play? I'm looking at the Sale Jets fixtures and only see six games so far this season. If Phil Mackenzie played in all those plus his two games with the Sharks then he's really hurting for game time in a RWC year. Which sucks because he's one of our better backs.

And that's great to hear about Hassler. Knee injuries always suck but he's young and a beast so I have full confidence he'll bounce back. Hopefully he can work off any rust during the PNC and RWC Warm-up. Though if Ospreys are looking for a solution while Hassler is out maybe they could give Conor Trainor a shot at a short term contract? He's a youngish big body with some explosive potential. I mean could it really hurt haha.

Would love to see Trainor in Europe, but I think he is focused with the Olympics.

Here's your new lazy weekly roundup.

London Welsh: London Welsh have been proving all season long they don't belong outside the Championship and this weekend was no different as Bordeaux went over them 26-3. Now it wasn't all bad as Richard Thorpe made his return to the starting lineup and slotted in for 80 minutes at Openside Flanker. If he's gunning for the World Cup then it's important he gets playing time, even if it's a weekly butt whooping.

London Irish: Speaking of returns to the lineup, studly Jebb Sinclair suited up for the Irish for the first time since December 26th and man do I want to watch this game. Sinclair continued his role as a utility forward as he moved up from the Back Row to the Second Row as the Irish edged out Grenoble 43-41 in what sounds like an exciting game. With our lackluster 2nd row and deepish Back Row maybe this is where he belongs going forward?

Sale: Phil Mackenzie was again left off the game sheet by the Sharks as they faced off with Clermont in Champions Cup action. There are also no further fixtures listed for the Sale Jets so I really have no idea what he was up to. It would be nice if Sale could have loaned him out like Glasgow did to Braid but such is life. I was reading Sale had a couple Backs go down to injury against Clermont so maybe he'll at least make the bench next week if they are anything serious.

Doncaster Knights: Seems like Jon Phelan may be establishing himself above both Buekeboom and Hotson heading towards the Rugby World Cup. Phelan has been a regular starter for the Knights and continued that trend as he got another start. Fellow Canuck, Tyler Hotson, saw some game time as he subbed off his fellow countryman at the 61' mark. Unfortunately for our duo, Doncaster fell to Jersey 26-19.

Plymouth Albion: Plymouth continued their nosedive to National League 1 as they lost 22-19 to Nottingham. The only upside is they have been giving Andrew Tiedemann regular playing time as well as the mysterious Mark Kohler who registered 70' at Tighthead and 80' at Right Wing respectively. Young Canadian Lock, Brett Buekeboom, appears to have had the game off. I know he's "only" playing in the Championship on a terrible team but I really hope Kohler gets a look during the PNC. Can't hurt to test out a back who spends the year training and playing XVs instead of 7s. Plus Blevins got a cap so why not?

London Scottish & Cornish Pirates: Connor Braid got the start at Inside Center while Matt Evans finally made his return from injury as a substitute. Evans didn't hit the field until the 71st minute when the Pirates were down 19-15 but Scottish scored a try not long after and sealed the deal with an 80th minute penalty to win 27-15. At least Braid had another full load, as he didn't come off the field until the 74th minute.

Bedford Blues: Justin Blanchet(Openside Flanker) and James Pritchard both got the start but sadly Bedford fell to the Rotherham ***ans 34-19. Pritchard was 2 for 3 in conversions on the night. Pritchard played the full game(he's getting a lot of miles this year which could be worrisome in September) while Blanchet was subbed off at the 54th minute. If Crowley doesn't give Blanchet a look this summer then I'd really start to think it might be time he goes.

Connacht Eagles: This last Wednesday Shane O'Leary started at Fly-Half and the Eagles went over Leinster 'A' 17-0. O'Leary had 2 conversions and a penalty during the game. Please commit to Canada. Pleaseeeeeeee.

Trinity College/Dublin University: I went to check the fixtures for the Ulster Bank League and it seems they have no games scheduled until the 31st for Jack Fitzpatrick gets himself a break for a couple weeks.

SU Agen: Jason Marshall was a reserve this week while Taylor Paris continued to solidify himself as a starter on the wing. Marshall subbed on at the 66' mark while Taylor Paris got the full game as Agen edged out Mont-de-Marsan 11-9. After 14 games, Agen sits 10th in the ProD2 standings but is 5 points out of a promotion playoff spot so should an interesting 2nd half of the season.

Pau: Cam Pierce is young, strong and has a bright future. He has also found himself on the best team in ProD2. Unfortunately for him and us he isn't getting any playing time with the main squad. My French is really rusty and I'm really lazy so someone else will have to dive into the reserve leagues to find more info on him.

Clermont Auvergne: Big ole Jamie Cudmore continues to hold back age as he slotted into the starting lineup against Sale. Also not surprisingly, the loveable giant got himself yellow carded, though I'm not quite sure what for. Anyways Cudmore was subbed off at the 62' mark, which really means 52' played due to his card.

Ospreys: Ospreys are really missing Jeff Hassler out there on the wing. At least Tyler Ardron has the starting 8-Man job. Ardron got almost the full game(was subbed off at 76') but unfortunately Ospreys just couldn't muster enough to overcome Northampton and fell 20-9 and can't advance in the Champions Cup.

Glasgow Warriors: DTH had one of the best weekends a player could ask for. He played a full game on the wing and had all three tries for Glasgow in a must win game over Montpellier if they wanted any chance of advancing in the Champions Cup. I mean c'mon, getting one try is pretty great but a hat-trick is phenomenal. Hopefully he can channel that magic in September. If you didn't catch the match here's the scoring hi-lights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa2CTuN3y2M . My favorite was DTH's 2nd try though the 3rd one was pretty good.

Disappointing set up but I guess Rugby Canada has most of its resources tied up this next year with the Rugby World Cup preparation. Only bonus is I live in Edmonton so might be able to make it to Calgary for at least the first set of games, if not the finals. Calgary is a nice enough city so if you could make it down there for the Canada Day week then I'd recommend it. The Calgary Stampede starts on July 3rd so you could make a vacation of it. And if not, all the games will apparently be streamed on the Rugby Canada website.

One off game between the Bears and Wolf Pack should be intense. Leaves no room for error from either side and the Bears should definitely be out for revenge after this last season. Ontario has pre-season games in May against The Rock in Halifax and against New York Old Blue before facing The Rock. Even without those games I'd be willing to bet the Blues are damn near guaranteed to beat any team The Rock could throw together.

Hopefully the Wolf Pack can get some pre-season games going on to help them gel and prepare as this might be their best chance to finally win the MacTier Cup, what with it being on their home turf. Really hope Evan Olmstead makes a return and impresses Crowley enough to get some real consideration. Still feel he was robbed of a spot during the AIs.

Doubt we'll see any of the 7s players take part since the Pan-Am 7s runs July 11-12. I also think the NACRA 7s are in late June and double as the Olympic qualifier which is pretty important. Which probably also means Canada will be without Phil Mack, Sean White, Nanyak Dala, John Moonlight, Harry Jones(better 10 than Parfrey), Ciaran Hearn and Conor Trainor for the PNC. Oh god that would mean starting Blevins at 12 again unless Phil Mackenzie makes his return to the national team. Also means Jamie Mackenzie could be the back up to Gordie McRorie and Patrick Parfrey will be Braid's back up. And now I feel kinda sick imagining a combination of JMac, Jr and Blevins on the field together. I mean I'd gladly take that on my clubs 1st division but I wouldn't even consider it for a CRC team let alone Canada.

Disappointing is right, I was hoping to go watch Ontario this year. A single round robin and then a finals would be four games for each team and be so much better.

I do like the Canada day event, it's a shame we couldn't do something like that every year. Unfortunately Canada Day is too early in the year and Labour Day is too football focused.

Maybe I'll get to the Pan Am games.

I'd definitely try and get out to the Pan-Am games if I were you. The final countries have been determined and it looks like a fun lineup: Canada, USA, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Guyana and Mexico. Top three should be a combo of Canada, USA and Argentina though I hope the rest can make it interesting. I think Brazil has a lot of potential but are still a ways off. Not sure how strong Uruguay or Chile are. Don't have much hope for Guyana or Mexico. I do know the South Americans are going to be in for a much tougher test when they line up against a Canada side that isn't made up by almost all U20 players. Women's teams are: Canada, USA, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.

CRC Dreams:
Hopefully we see an increase in rugby visibility and popularity here after the Rugby World Cup and the Lower Canada Voyageurs can finally move up to play with the big boys as the CRC goes back to the regular schedule in 2016. Might give Quebec/Eastern Ontario players more incentive to play and improve if they are guaranteed a team to themselves since The Rock is mostly Newfies featuring Maritimers. Plus the more games the better and an extra team would make a minimum of 8 games, though I'd like to eventually see 12 games but that's a ways off. Might even make it more attractive to TV people, even if it started out only like what Shaw does with CIS Football.

Prairie Wolf Pack 12 game example: 2H/1A against BC Bears, 2H/1A against The Rock, 1H/2A against Ontario Blues and 1H/2A against Les Voyageurs.

Maybe Rugby Canada could even use some of that 7s funding to get some CRC 7s action going to help find talent for Canada and the Maple Leafs. I'd have each team host a small round robin tournament. So BC Bears host in Vancouver, Wolf Pack in Calgary or Edmonton, Blues in Toronto, Rock in St John's and hopefully Voyageurs in Montreal or Ottawa. Winner of the CRC 7s cup is the team with the most wins/points at the end of the Canada Sevens Series. Have the tournaments in May-June to not compete with the CRC XVs. Only thing is clubs might be annoyed to be losing star players for most of the summer season.

BC "News"
The CDI Premier League started back up with UBC vs UVic this past weekend. Rest of the teams start play next weekend. Does anyone know if Ray Barkwill's ban(8 weeks I think) takes effect once the season starts or did the winter break take care of it? As much as I don't like him playing for Canada, he's almost guaranteed the back up role and he really needs the game time.

Funny enough Seattle Saracens will have spent most of their 2014-15 season playing exhibition games against CDI opposition and were only granted four games against Okanagan Spring Brewery teams(Abbotsford and Meraloma) because most teams didn't want to play them. Not that I can blame the clubs since Seattle Saracens is one of the top clubs in North America. They also receive a guaranteed spot in the playoff promotion which I think is fair. The game is guaranteed(I think) to be against the winner of the Vancouver Island league.

Here's UBC vs UVic if anyone is interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=7uiCL5RK6W0#t=0 don't scroll down or the score will be ruined.

Some bad news for our 7s team as Wellington and Vegas are fast approaching. Appears Phil Mack will be sitting out as he continues to recover from his knee injury. Hopefully he has a quick recovery because his knees seem real suspect at this point. In interesting Mack news, Phil has been named the head coach of Lionheart 7s at the 24 team Elite Mens Las Vegas Invitational. Should be a great chance for him to earn quality coaching experience. He will definitely benefit from a fairly strong side that should be one of the favorites to win it all. Nick Blevins captains a group consisting of Clay Panga, Adam Bontus, Seb Pearson, Chris Slater, Stu McKay, Gordie McRorie, Rory Tomlinson, Shea O'Hallahan, Jon Morris, Brandon Harrison and Jeremy Kyne. Kinda shocked Kyle Gilmour isn't on the team.

Edmonton is sending some youth teams, 5 in total I think, down to Vegas. Edmonton Gold in the Boys U-16 7s, Edmonton Gold and Edmonton Green in Serevi High School Boys Open 7s, Edmonton Green in Serevi High School Girl Open 7s and Edmonton Gold in Serevi High School Girl Elite 7s. Some youth players from my club are part of the teams heading down so I feel particularly invested while hoping for good showings. There looks to be a good amount of Canadian representation heading down but I'm too lazy to list them all.

Did he do in the same knee that was injured before, or is this the other leg?

Kinda cool that he seems to be taking an interest in coaching. First the Vancouver Island Thunder, now this.

I'm not sure if it is the same knee but I'd bet money on it being the same. He got hurt again in late June and didn't return until November. He then plays in one 7s tournament then is on the shelf again. Sounds to me like he came back too soon and re-aggravated it. I definitely know that feeling. Hopefully he can get and remain healthy through the World Cup.

Also Rugby Canada has announced that Canada 'A' will be headed to Fiji to participate in the Pacific Challenge along with Fiji 'A', Tonga 'A', Samoa 'A', Junior Japan and Argentina PAMPAS XV. Those are some quality domestic sides so should be a good test for our home based players. Hong Kong 7s takes place March 27-29 so hopefully we have access to some of our better backs. Hopefully this could be a yearly thing along with the ARC. Our domestic guys need more than what they have been getting.

Schedule:
March 10th: Canada 'A' vs Junior Japan
March 14th: Canada 'A' vs Samoa 'A'
March 18th: Canada 'A' vs PAMPAS XV
March 23rd: Canada 'A' vs TBD

The strongest team they could probably send would look something like this:
1) Hubert Buydens
2) Ray Barkwill
3) Jake Ilnicki
4) Evan Olmstead(I hope)
5) Aaron Flagg
6) Kyle Gilmour
7) John Moonlight
8) Jeremy Kyne(with the RWC coming up we need a strong team to help our domestic guys prepare and Kyne is the best domestic 8-Man IMO)
9) Gordie McRorie
10) Harry Jones
11) Jordan Wilson-Ross
12) Nick Blevins
13) Conor Trainor
14) Sean Duke
15) Ciaran Hearn

16) Ryan Hamilton
17) Tom Dolezel
18) Doug Wooldridge
19) Kyle Baillie
20) Nanyak Dala
21) Sean White
22) Patrick Parfrey
23) Pat Kay

Of course I doubt we'll get that many of the 7s squad playing XVs in March. Still there's decent options like Clay Panga, Admir Cejvanovic and Seb Pearson for Back Row and Sean Ferguson, Shea O'Hallahan, Andrew Coe and Adam Bontus for backs. I hope if Jones doesn't play(which he should if he's going to be on the RWC traveling roster) that they'd give Pat Kay a shot at Fly-Half because Parfrey should not be outside the centers(if even there) and I think Kay could wind up decent.

The past weeks round-up for Canadian pros.

Agen: Taylor Paris got another start on the wing and had a hell of a day it seems. Paris played the full game, scoring two tries and helped power Agen to a 30-13 win over Béziers. Jason Marshall unfortunately had to settle for a back up role and went in at the 63rd minute.

Pau: Cam Pierce made a seemingly rare appearance for the Pro D2 leaders and hopefully his performance can lead to more. Pierce got on the field at the 50th minute and even got himself a try 12 minutes later as Pau breezed past Colomiers 45-10.

Doncaster Knights: Jon Phelan and Tyler Hotson got the start at Lock for Doncaster and seem to have played the full game. Doncaster powered past Munster 'A' 38-17 and advance to the semi-final in the British & Irish Cup. No idea how Doncaster has gone undefeated in B&I Cup play yet struggles in the Championship. At least Phelan and Hotson are seeing the field.

Connacht Eagles: O'Leary and company had a rather easy game as they only played the German NT. O'Leary got the start at Fly-Half and hit 3 conversions on the 5 first half tries as the Eagles smacked around Germany 50-7.

London Welsh: Richard Thorpe got the start at openside flanker and played 42 minutes in a game that Welsh seemed actually competitive. Unfortunately for them recently promoted Lyon(and my French team) just had more in them as Welsh fell to Lyon 17-12. Can't believe how bad Welsh have been, they haven't won a game in any competition as far as I know.

London Irish: Big ole Jeb Sinclair got another start but once again slotted in at Lock. Glad to see he's getting time even if he's jumping between 2nd Row and Back Row. Sinclair got himself 59 minutes as Irish continued their success in the Challenge Cup as they beat Rovigo 34-9.

Ospreys: Littleguy will love this. Ardron got himself the captain's armband and played the full 80 minutes. Unfortunately for Opreys, they suffered a shocking loss on the road as Treviso was awarded an 80th minute penalty try from a scrum and nailed the conversion to win 23-20. Ospreys have definitely been missing Hassler since he got hurt.

Glasgow Warriors: DTH got the start on the wing in a must win game for Glasgow. Unfortunately for Warriors fans, Bath proved too much as Glasgow fell 20-15 and won't advance in the Champions Cup. DTH played 63 minutes before coming off.

Clermont Auvergne: Clermont had a huge game against Saracens and would have loved to have Jamie Cudmore available. Unfortunately the Canadian legend suffered a knee injury the week before against Sale and was unavailable for selection. Hopefully it's nothing much as he's still an important player for Clermont.

The rest of the Canadians had the week off as RFU Championship play was on hold for the British & Irish Cup.

Reserve prop for the Wolf Pack, 24 year old Ryan Kotlewski from the Calgary Saints, is headed down to Australia to play in Canberra for the 2015 campaign. I believe his goal is to get attention from a higher level league down there, possibly even an NRC job. My clubs best prop has done the same. Played the summer season in the Alberta Cup then jumped to the CDI Premier League for the Fall season and is now down in Brisbane to spend the upcoming Aussie season there. Can't blame talented young Canadians from heading abroad to learn and play since they are limited here in both opportunity and competition. Djustice Sears-Duru did the same thing, heading to New Zealand to play last year before breaking his ankle.

Holy ****, Liam Underwood lives again. Glad to see him finally take the field again after his long term concussion. Should be interesting seeing how he does after so long away and I'm real excited to see how he does. Hopefully this means he's available for the PNC and RWC *knocks on wood until knuckles are bloody*. The injury list is really unfortunate but at least it opens the door to younger guys like Cejvanovic and Kay to hopefully get some playing time. Even if we had a healthy lineup I'd think the boys would struggle in Wellington. Being in a group with New Zealand AND England who are both capable of winning it all. At least there's Papua New Guinea to beat up on. Does anyone know what has kept Hirayama out for so long? I don't think I've heard anything about him since the Commonwealth Games.

Wellington Sevens Schedule February 6-7
