2013 British and Irish Lions

Hmmm... from Ireland, I guess, Felix Jones, with a return to form he could catch people by surprise.
Gilroy, although he is a bit dodgy in defence and not proven at international level yet.
Ian Henderson.
Just to go left field as f**k Michael Bent and JJ Hanrahan, you never know, if he could get a good run of games at 10 or 12 for Munster he could do a Keith Earls on it (Hopefully with slightly more success).

Seriously? He's just proven himself at the international level against Argentina, there's even talk about him going on the Lions tour from Gatland himself.
How is he dodgy in defense? He didn't miss a tackle v Argentina - and he's been pretty good for Ulster. Where did you get that conclusion from?

[sorry for the double post]

Just against Argentina? Don't know about anyone else but I didn't see him miss one..

Obviously with Gilroy we've gotta wait and see how he is after the 6 Nations is done. If he does what Halfpenny did 4 years ago and keeps up his form all season, we could see him tour.

One test doesn't make you a proven International, in the one chance he has had so far he excelled, fair play to him. He has indeed looked very good for Ulster, potentially even a pivotal player for both province and country; but he is, in no way shape or form, a proven international test winger. Indeed he did miss tackles versus Argentina, its not that I'm knocking his defence as woefully inadequate, moreover a weakness in his game, similar to Zebo in that regard, neither inspires me with full confidence defensively, although I have no doubt that they might do so in the future.

No, but from what we've seen so far he's done as much as he possible could - besides, I don't know why I'm arguing with you, Gatland gave him a nod for a potential cap, so it's a bit of a waste of time.

Has anyone got any ideas or views on players who may come from nowhere, or are currently playing under the radar who may sneak onto the lions tour??? Discuss.....:umnik2:

Some bloke called Foden. Even if some think he is the third best 15 in Britain and Ireland.

I was not trying to start an argument, I just pointed out that I have reservations about his defence and were the Lions team to be picked today or tomorrow, or anytime soon for that matter, I'd be worried about his defence, especially, against the likes of some of the Australian backline. But as a young player with vast potential hopefully his all round game will improve and by the time of the Lions tour he will be in with a good shout, I surely hope so as he's one of the most exciting Irish wingers I've seen in a long time.
We are all entitled to our opinions (Gatland included ;)) and no offence was intended.

Oldies like Sheridan, Stephen Jones, Easter.

Otherwise, I think Burns has a good shot. I'll predict that he'll at least be on the radar come the end of the six nations.

The guy I really hoped would make it is James Simpson-Daniel. Since Shane buggered off, he's the best winger in Britain/Ireland, and deserves the recognition. But since he's out until after the 6N, he'll only make it if Gatland's a secret admirer.

I want to say I hope so, but only after we play you!
He is a great talent, I'd like to see him continue his good form and go over Flood/Farrell/Sexton/Probably Priestland.

Thats a big call.

True, and tbf, I don't know exactly what's happening in Ireland. It's just that there isn't a winger that I know of (other than Shane) that attacks with so much creativity. It's the way he fools defenders with his change of pace (his best ability imo) and sidestep. The lines he runs to put himself through gaps. The awareness to join in as a linkman and put others through. It's also that for a guy with a lot of attacking potency, he's so comfortable in defense too.

Criminal charges should be brought against those with the power to have given JSD more caps than he has, yet refused to.

A little piece of me dies when I see him being overlooked for England in favour of the wingers we currently have in the set up ( as fine as these players are )

I reacon if there is a decent 12 that comes out of no-where for the 6 nations they ahve a real shout. With J Roberts the 1st choice we will need a good back up rather than move our 13 to 12 (espically for the mid week sides) so if a young un turns up they might get a shot.

All home nations 12s look average most of the time.

My squad at this current time:

Props - Cian Healy, Gethin Jenkins, Alex Corbisiero, Adam Jones, Dan Cole, Mike Ross
- No real problems here. Scotland's scrum isn't to great although Euan Murray is an outsider. Others that could make include Mako Vulipola who was impressive against Australia, Andrew Sheridan if Gatland is willing to go there and possibly Paul James.
Hookers - Rory Best, Dylan Hartley, Richardt Strauss
- Best and Hartley pick themselves, Strauss is looking very good at this level as well. Ken Owens could be an outsider for me, because he's played well every time for Wales, carries well, impeccable lineout throwing to. Ross Ford is also a good option.
Locks - Richie Gray, Donnacha Ryan, Paul O'Connell, Alun-Wyn Jones, Geoff Parling
- Gray and Ryan are clear cut in my opinion and Parling looks very good and is a hard working lock. Jones and O'Connell are experienced and if Jones finds his world cup form, then he could fight for a start as could O'Connell.
Blindside flanker - Dan Lydiate, Stephen Ferris, Sean O'Brien
- forget the crap that O'Brien outplayed McCaw in that test, it wasn't him making the steals. He's a blindside and an excellent one at that. Could also come into consideration at 8. I reckon Gatland will chose Lydiate as he fits in with what Warburton does (see below about opensides). Forget Robshaw, he isn't that good, Alberts and Louw ran over the top of him on Saturday.
Openside flanker - Sam Warburton, Ross Rennie
- Justin Tipuric may stake his claim in the Six Nations but Warburton showed last week he is world class as he went toe to toe with McCaw. Rennie is proven at test level. I think if Tipuric shows he can be an impact player from the bench then this could change. Steffon Armitage could be a wildcard as well.
Number Eight - Jamie Heaslip, Toby Faletau
- It's close between these two and Ben Morgan as well as Dave Denton. We could potentially see Ferris or O'Brien play here as well.
Scrum Half - Danny Care, Tavis Knoyle, Conor Murray
- I think Knoyle could be a wildcard with his abrasive impact off the bench. Unless Phillips shifts into gear then he won't make the plane. Henry Pyrgos, if he proves himself in the Six Nations could also come in.
Outside Half - Jonathan Sexton, James Hook, Jonny Wilkinson
- Priestland is out of form incredibly, Flood is overrated and Laidlaw is too weak in contact. Wilkinson has been there before and is playing great footy for Toulon. Hook has versatility which could get him on the plane.
Centres - Manu Tuilagi, Jonathan Davies, Jamie Roberts, Brian O'Driscoll
- these are the only players worthy in my opinion, although O'Driscoll is subject to fitness and Roberts to form. Hook can cover centre, as well as possibly North. Keith Earls is a liability in defence.
Wings - George North, Tommy Bowe, Craig Gilroy, Tim Visser.
- Cuthbert is a liability defensively (Gatland might pick him though cause of his form in Aus last June). Ashton is crap, straight up, can't tackle and gives away penalties. Gilroy has an X-factor about him and will be interesting to see how he goes in the Six Nations. I think he could be the 2013 version of Jason Robinson?
Full Backs - Rob Kearney, Stuart Hogg, Leigh Halfpenny
- Extra full back to provide more cover on the wing. Hogg is a prodigious talent while the other two are experienced and Halfpenny is a good kicker.

My starting team.

1. Healy, 2. Best, 3. Jones, 4. Gray, 5. Ryan, 6. Lydiate, 7. Warburton, 8. Ferris, 9. Care, 10. Sexton, 11. North, 12. Davies, 13. Tuilagi, 14. Bowe, 15. Kearney

Ferris is a great ball carrier and will balance the back row perfect. Gray and Ryan are your enforcers. Healy and Best will add further to the breakdown, Care is probably in my opinion the best of an average bunch unless we see Phillips improve (Gatland will pick him tbh but I would like improvement), Sexton is hands down the best 10, Davies and Tuilagi could combined well, although the Roberts-BOD axis could come into play again. We'll see!

Yep - easily my favourite English winger. Don't know how he's missed out. Scored an amazing one against the Baabaas for England. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA7OKP9N06g

Been a fan of him since then. Shame he's 30 years old now - should have had a much more prolific career than he has.

Blindside flanker - Dan Lydiate, Stephen Ferris, Sean O'Brien

I disagree with your comment on Sean O'Brien not having the capability to be a Lions 7 , perhaps he is not the best groundhog in the world but last season he was a dammed good one and also anyone who watched the 2nd test with New Zealand that I've spoken to agree that Sean O'Brien did in fact dominate Richie McCaw that day. His work on coming through the ruck and forcing turnovers was exceptional.

And with Warbuton not being in any reasonable form at the moment I think if O'Brien performs as he did last season he'll take the Jersey
I'd agree with the majority of what you've to say on the rest of the squad however.
