Ireland are not his biggest fan either after his woeful reffing vs Wales.

He's inconsistent and effectively helps worse teams beat better teams with unbalanced one eyed performances. Had a gutsful of him.

I watched that game, he made mistakes to both sides. Barnes is a good ref, he makes the odd strange decision but every ref does so.

Complaining about the ref is rich though, seeing as you won the World Cup in 2011 due to a string of poor and dodgy decisions.

Holy crap, I've not seen that video before. That is an appallingly bad exhibition of refereeing. Clear and obvious infringements by Wales are not called, and the same clear and obvious infringements by Ireland are called. I can well understand why Irish fans were so angry after that match....what the hell is he looking at? Even if the video maker cherry picked his incidents, there was still some very poor refereeing on show.

It certainly put his performance in Sydney in clear perspective!

i agree. I don't think it will happen though. Beale was on fire for the waratahs at 12 last season and probably would have gone on to be a force for the wallabies if it weren't for the off field issues.

Giteau probbly isn't who he once was, but he is still class. the wallabies could do with his experience running the back line.

Isn't his left knee leaning on the player on the ground followed by on the floor before he rips the ball? Isn't he therefore off his feet and therefore technically it should be a penalty to the Wallabies and the AB first try disallowed?

Yeah it's silly seeing everyone dissect referees, everyone referee will differ in styles and how they manage a game, it's the same in every sport, were humans not robots (but clearly we need robots according to a lot of you). The AB lost last week and the Wallabies lost this week, the AB will lose again and so will Australia, you can moan all you want, it's not going to change a thing.. And I say all that as a Spurs fan

As far as I can tell, this is where he first got hands on the ball, he's not leaning on anyone and this is all that matters.
Keep in mind that this photo shows that a ruck has formed; if he hasn't already got his hands on the ball by now, then
Owens would be penalising him for hands in the ruck (he would have made his "Ruck now!" call.)

.. you can see that player is Retallick, and he's well beyond Whitelock.

Interesting, you can also see that Toomua (?) had Whitelock around the neck and dragged him to ground that way... that is a yellow card offence, even a red card if serious enough.

This is the point which is confusing: so as long as a player has his hands on the ball before the ruck is formed and is on his feet (I.e. He is supporting his own body weight - not leaning with any part of his body on a player on the ground or the ground itself) he can then go off his feet once he has the ball. Is that right? Because Sam is definitely leaning with his left knee on the player on the ground in the footage immediately after the screenshots you've posted.

I agree its not bias (as in a concious effort), but I think he has two major weaknesses in his game, the scrum and the tackle, both of which work against the way we play.

The Tackle Area
Last week, Barnes consistently allowed Pocock to win ball at the breakdown (both turnover and his own) with his hands or elbows on the ground, or while leaning (usually with his knees) on either a team-mate or an opponent on the ground. Hooper has another technique; he makes a big production of showing a clear release by extending his arms out and up (which is fine) but then puts his hands on the ground beyond the ball and drags them back to scoop up the ball. Both of these techniques are illegal as they are not supporting their own bodyweight, yet Barnes allowed them to do this with impunity, and they (especially Pocock) are much more effective when given this latitude to work in

Last night was vastly different. Owens did not allow them to do this. He made it clear by penalising them when they did, even at one stage saying to one of them "....you've put your hands on the ground then went for the ball. Other way around please!" Once they were made to compete legally at the tackle, their breakdown dominance ended.

The scrum
Last week the Wallaby LHP (Sio?) was packing with his head below hips and then either hinging (pulling Franks down) or getting his head under Franks' chest and driving up. Both these techniques are illegal but Barnes allow them to get away with it.

Last night, the first scrum penalty went against NZ; Owen missed the fact that Sio packed low and drove upward (was made obvious when Moore's head popped first). McCaw had a word with Owens, told him that Sio was packing too low, to which Owens replied "I'll have a look next time". At the next scrum, Owens talked to both front rows about not packing too low. Sio did so and got pinged for hinging and pinged again for hinging at the next one on an AR's call. Australia's scrum dominance ended there, as soon as they were made to scrummage legally.

All things being equal, a scrum will rotate clockwise, and if one scrum is stronger than the other, the scrum will move to the stronger team's right without anyone doing anything illegal. This is scrummaging 101; if (the writer) is callng himself a "scrum analyst" he needs to do better than that.[/TEXTAREA]
