Steve Tew getting the excuses in

excuse for what?

Is it not fair enough to be so concerned about loosing so much money, if any unions when bankrupt we would all be saying they were run poorly.

What really needs to happen though is for all major unions to do the same, or if they are not loosing as much money then the Current NZRU leadership needs looking at.

If the Old farts and Masons hadn't moved heaven and earth to stop expansion of the game and let Japan rightfully have the tournament, they wouldn't be losing anything at all. In fact, this tournament would probably be the biggest so far.

Rightfully?!?!?.. and why does Japan hold more right than NZ to host this competition?.

Steve Tew is right on the money[no pun intended] with this. Anyone who doesn't see what he is trying to say is just ignorant.

An 8 year delay in expansion of the game and a $6million loss.

Every fan outside of New Zealand demanded this tournament go to Japan, only the old farts didn't like the idea of the sport developing and new superpowers developing, worried their cosy seat on the head tables may be challenged. That goes for all the top 10 nations.

Deny it all you want, we all know how corrupt rugby is at the top.

So how is the World Cup being hosted in Japan supposed to develop new super powers? I think the dislike for New Zealand would have been the main reason for not wanting the tournament in New Zealand especially when the top nation is New Zealand. I bet if the All Blacks were around the 7th ranked spot less people would have a problem with it being in NZ.

NZ is a rugby mad nation, not just in certain parts of the country, our entire country[as big as it is]. We live and breathe Rugby and the culture here certainly shows especially during the tournament. You see Kiwi's going out and supporting ALL the teams and making it an enjoyable experience for all comers.
I can't say I'd be certain the same would've happened in Japan. Heck, some Kiwi's are even getting behind the Aussies. Did you see the turnout at the airport when Tonga arrived?? it was an enormous welcome. In fact, each squad was welcomed into NZ very openly and taken on by the communities here.
I could see the teams just arriving in Japan and going about their business. Or maybe the tournament should go to Japan in 2015??..

Too ****in right it should. The old guard look after their gin and tonic too bloody much. - Do you think that every 4th Soccer World Cup should be in Brazil?

The point I was making however is Steve Tew can't ***** about losing cash on this cup when their bid clearly showed there was no way they could turn a profit even when times were good, especially to pontificate how New Zealand may sit out the next tournament. He's had his cake, now he should eat it.

But I think what Tew is talking about here is that at any World Cup, not just this one, they are losing $13m. I'd say that's why he's threatening to pull the All Blacks out of the 2015 World Cup, because they are going to lose money at THAT tournament.

He's talking about the major nations, not the world cup in itself. We all know the World Cup turns profit, it's the NZRU, ARU, RU, etc he's talking about that lose out.

It's not though... It's the NZRU in THIS tournament that's losing out. Because they were awarded a tournament which was unsustainable. The very same reason Australia were sole hosts in 2003 after the NZRU were forced to pull out because they didn't have the funds to co-host.

Pissy excuses attempting to justify the old farts protecting their gin bottles.

... When is he meant to say it then exactly? ... the draw for the next one is in 2013, so they need to get this sorted well before then, and it doesn't look like an issue they are going to fix over night, does it?

He's clearly not talking about the cost of running the tournament, but the cost of attending it ... so it really doesn't matter if it was held in Japan or not

That's exactly what he's talking about ... the cost of attending ANY world cup tournament - it affects sponsorship revenue (as he mentions) and gate takings, with the number of test matches able to be played, reduced by a significant amount.

Some unions already need financial assistance to attend ... I wouldn't be surprised if the likes of Australia and South Africa also end up supporting his stance

How the hell does it cost 6.6million to go to a world cup?

Flights to England from New Zealand wouldn't be more than £2k return, if you go cheap - then put them up in a hotel for a few weeks, couple of hundred quid there

If they don't want to compete, then I hope they don't let the door hit their asses on their way out. It's their fault that they hosted a tournament that would lose them money. I agree, the atmosphere is fantastic, and NZ are a good choice for the tournament, but how can they be complaining about not getting enough money? Canada fields a team primarily composed of semi-pro players. NZ has had a system in place for decades producing world class players. Why do the major nations need IRB cash? Can't they sustain themselves with their established systems, something the minnow countries barely have? This isn't an attack on NZ, but I just don't understand why they are complaining about this.

All teams attending the world cup have some form sponsorship/promotion rights taken off them for the duration of the tournament. This alone could equate to millions of dollars. The football world cup apparently is not so strict, Tew wants similar right's to what they get in the football world cup.

NZ would probably lose out the most as the ALL BLACKS are obviously the strongest brand in the rugby world.

I was thinking this. An effort would have to be made to spend that sort of money getting to a competition.

Say 50K flights too and from and 5k a night on hotels for a generous 60 days (300k). Transport around the place when you're there Lets say another 100k (which is over the top) Equipment and staff, lets go mad and say 200k. and we'll give every member of staff and player 30k for 2 months work (on top of what they would have been paid anyway) 1.5M.

That's 2.15 million euro (times 1.7 for Euro to NZ Doller conversion rate) = 3.6 million NZDoller.

And that's for a team travelling halfway around the world. There's no way that the NZ rugby team could have spent 6 million dollers to show up to their own country or to head over to England.

I'm sure their initial contracts invasage the world cup and their sponsership deals take that into account. They're not losing anything or being penalised.

Comment stands about the sponsership regardless of aforementioned article.

Good point about the tours though....that said, does it not cost money to travel across the world to tour for 3/4 weeks?

I would've thought you guys would've had a more open mind about this as he isn't just speaking up for himself but for all nations.

Also, do you need to pay fees as well to participate in the tournament?..

No 1 team is bigger then a tournament, just as no player is bigger then a team.

Otherwise the tail is wagging the dog.
