excuse for what?
Is it not fair enough to be so concerned about loosing so much money, if any unions when bankrupt we would all be saying they were run poorly.
What really needs to happen though is for all major unions to do the same, or if they are not loosing as much money then the Current NZRU leadership needs looking at.
Rightfully?!?!?.. and why does Japan hold more right than NZ to host this competition?.
An 8 year delay in expansion of the game and a $6million loss.
Every fan outside of New Zealand demanded this tournament go to Japan, only the old farts didn't like the idea of the sport developing and new superpowers developing, worried their cosy seat on the head tables may be challenged. That goes for all the top 10 nations.
Deny it all you want, we all know how corrupt rugby is at the top.
So how is the World Cup being hosted in Japan supposed to develop new super powers? I think the dislike for New Zealand would have been the main reason for not wanting the tournament in New Zealand especially when the top nation is New Zealand. I bet if the All Blacks were around the 7th ranked spot less people would have a problem with it being in NZ.
NZ is a rugby mad nation, not just in certain parts of the country, our entire country[as big as it is]. We live and breathe Rugby and the culture here certainly shows especially during the tournament. You see Kiwi's going out and supporting ALL the teams and making it an enjoyable experience for all comers.
I can't say I'd be certain the same would've happened in Japan. Heck, some Kiwi's are even getting behind the Aussies. Did you see the turnout at the airport when Tonga arrived?? it was an enormous welcome. In fact, each squad was welcomed into NZ very openly and taken on by the communities here.
I could see the teams just arriving in Japan and going about their business. Or maybe the tournament should go to Japan in 2015??..
He's talking about the major nations, not the world cup in itself. We all know the World Cup turns profit, it's the NZRU, ARU, RU, etc he's talking about that lose out.

If the Old farts and Masons hadn't moved heaven and earth to stop expansion of the game and let Japan rightfully have the tournament, they wouldn't be losing anything at all. In fact, this tournament would probably be the biggest so far.
But I think what Tew is talking about here is that at any World Cup, not just this one, they are losing $13m. I'd say that's why he's threatening to pull the All Blacks out of the 2015 World Cup, because they are going to lose money at THAT tournament.
How the hell does it cost 6.6million to go to a world cup?
Flights to England from New Zealand wouldn't be more than £2k return, if you go cheap - then put them up in a hotel for a few weeks, couple of hundred quid there

All teams attending the world cup have some form sponsorship/promotion rights taken off them for the duration of the tournament. This alone could equate to millions of dollars. The football world cup apparently is not so strict, Tew wants similar right's to what they get in the football world cup.
NZ would probably lose out the most as the ALL BLACKS are obviously the strongest brand in the rugby world.
