As expected my local MP came back with the usual crap regarding Johnson and said he voted to support Johnson. Filled with nonsense about how Johnson was deeply regretful, had instituted changes blah blah. Spineless toad.

Claim to have oven ready deal to replace previous shambles. Ignore previous shambles were negotiated by you. Blame EU for not accepting it or for when anything goes wrong, to back to point 1 and further damage our credibility internationally.

I think the justification now is that it's harming the people of NI, it should be ignored, even though it was completely foreseeable and forewarned.

It's similar to the judge on the Rwandan deportation case saying that the deportations were in the public interest.

For me those are very sketchy legal arguments, as public interest is not quantifiable and the NI protocol not working could have been avoided.

Unilaterally altering the agreement breaks international law I'm pretty sure. The people of NI aren't being respected by Westminster and are just being used to play politics, a bit like partition and everything that's happened in the 101 years since.

From an outsider (ish) looking in, Northern Ireland politics seem such an odd mess of people not really knowing what they want but furiously defending whatever option they happen to have stumbled on at that particular moment in time as if they've always thought it...

TBH I can see both the breakup of the UK and the reunification of Ireland within my lifetime, unless I die soon in some horrific jet ski accident or similar approved form of early death.

For me it seems so subjective.

I think in this case the court has judged that its in the public interest for the policy to be followed. Public interest is one of the primary considerations of any court in our jurisdictions and in this case it appears that the justification is that long drawn out legal challenges with inconsistent results is not in the public interest, it drains tax money and clogs up the justice system.

The court is not saying the policy is in the public interest, not its place to comment, although the Home Office lawyers are trying to spin the judgment that way from my reading of it. All suitably abhorrent from your government whilst there's not much the court can do without infringing on separation of powers.
