EVEN though the new Xbox 360 is nine days away from launch, the console is already breaking records.
According to the number of pre-orders for the eagerly-awaited device, Microsoft's projections show it will generate $30 million to $40 million in the first 24 hours on sale.
This will make it the highest grossing entertainment launch in Australian history.
The console, which will go on sale at 12.01am on March 23, will take gaming to the next level thanks to the three separate core processors on board running at 3.2Ghz and a graphics card operating at 500Mhz.
It also has a 20GB hard drive and eight times more RAM than the original Xbox resulting in a high definition gaming experience with razor sharp graphics and detailed and interactive environments.
The Xbox 360 launch in the US in November took Microsoft by surprise with the enormous interest emptying store shelves and leaving the company struggling to meet demand.
Microsoft's home and entertainment regional director David McLean said interest in the Xbox 360 in Australia had been phenomenal.
"It's beyond our wildest expectations," he said.
"We saw how popular the Xbox 360 is in the US and Europe and to see a launch of this scale shaping up in Australia is mind-blowing."
Retailers Harvey Norman, Coles Myer and specialist stores like EB Games have been taking pre-orders for months with the original launch date, scheduled for March 2, put back to March 23 to meet demand.
Mr McLean said Microsoft had done everything to ensure there was enough stock on day one to meet pre-orders.
"If you're after an Xbox 360 at launch, your best hope is to pre-order it," Mr McLean said.
Microsoft said the projected sales figures would be made up of 70 per cent console sales and 30 per cent game sales.
The Xbox 360, while being primarily aimed at gamers, is also a fully fledged entertainment device which will play CDs and DVDs.
The Xbox 360 console will be priced at $649.95.
