Women Refs for the Prem

very good news.

All my experiences with Female referees have been very positive. We have a few female refs in our local social league and they are by far the best ref's in the competition, ones the daughter of another ref and she's better than him.

The guys give it a bit of chat among themselves we're warming up and they see it's a female ref, but we always tell them they are good - they don't believe us until they are about 4-5 minutes into the game and they nearly always come off the pitch saying how good they are.

Few years ago saw a women ref a Havant vs Rosslyn Park, I think it was, game and she was very good. Demanded and got respect from the players and got the vast majority or decisions right.

We're often complaining about the standard of reffing at all levels of the game. Anything that expands the refereeing pool and therefore leads to a higher standard of officiating can only be a good thing.

"Captain ! Captain, come here I want to have a word with you. Okay, No.5, Green, He....please stop looking at me with that smile !......ok so, No.5 green was responsible of infringement at the ruck and eh......no you can't have my number !!"

- Crouch !
....
- Bind !
....
.........

- Bind !
.....
(whole packs looking left and right in confusion)

......oh..
SET !!

Are you determined to make a fool of yourself on every thread on the forum?

All for it.

Sadly, I can't add to the heartwarming tales of how having a female ref's worked really great. I've only had one, she was about 18 and blatantly fancied one of our players, spending far too long being worried about giving him treatment when he got hurt. Mindyou, she wasn't worse than the others, we've had some truly awful reffing performances.

Ah that's just a bad ref so. Nige manages to keep a lid on it.

Neither can I - the only one I've ever experienced had to end the game early because she lost control of the game.

That's the point though - they're still just refs.
A good experience is just as irrelevant to elite level reffing as a bad one is (unless you are playing at championship or higher level).

I've said on the Bath forum that I think this article is a bit of a red herring.

It's basically saying "there are women refs at the WRWC" and "There is a female assistant ref in the championship".
To me the first statement is meaningless - the refs at the WRWC are obviously going to be women.

The second suggests that there might be a female ref in the championship soon. Based on that I can't see how you can extrapolate that there is going to be a female ref in the premiership any time soon.
Until Sara Cox (or anyone else) is consistently reffing games in the championship (not assisting) and considered to be the best ref they have then she wont ref in the premiership unless there is some sort of "positive discrimination".

Yup, but increasing the talent pool can only be a good thing.

This is Rugby not football. The Ref will demand respect and the players will give them it. It doesn't really matter if they're a man or woman as long as they get the decisions right, players give Nigel Owens respect because he (on the whole) is a good ref. Steve Walsh on the other hand....

I'm not sure you can call it a red herring when there is a whopping great question mark in the ***le of the ESPN article.

:)

Steve Walsh on the other hand....

you know, i don't dislike Walsh that much, i tend to actually enjoy the games he refs.

Agree on your other points.

ooooh, that is a good point, hadn't thought about that...individual. Although as rats said, one good or one bad example are nothing, there needs to be consistency for there to be validation; but it's true, there is the Steve Walsh example. If it..well, "he" can ref and somehow command respect from the players or at very least not get walked all over, then surely women have a chance. Personally, I'd be afraid of him on a field, so I'd rather not get too close to him or have to directly talk to him, so I guess that works as "respecting the ref".
I remember when he got "hurt" on his wrist or smt during the last FRA IRE and he was moaning loudly like a bish into the live tv mic for a good 45 seconds. I hope his mommy flew in that night to give him a kissy on the area and tucked him into bed, at least.

From my experiences, it seems players are a bit more polite with female referees, and more often than not they tend to know their stuff. My experiences with them have always been pretty good.

This may be Big Ewis-esque so I apologize in advance, but I remember a ridiculously cute girl refereed one of my U21 games. I don't think I've ever put more effort into a rugby game.

Scrummaging while sucking in your gut adds an entirely new dimension.

that's alright, apology accepted. But you do make a good point, it's chivalrous to look good on a pitch and behave while some hot mama's tanning her perky bust, wherein lies the most precious artifact........the fuccking whistle, ya damn pervs. Mmmyezzzzz...maybe that's what Rugby needs, the softness and gentle touch of a ladehhh. But she's got to be attractive, or else the guys won't receive the benefits of that effect we're talking about. But then again, and I'm actually serious here, couldn't it be distracting ? Either the guy's starving for meat and just can't get his mind off it, or he's a pathologically shy guy whose game gets thrown off entirely...

And yes, the authority issue...unless you put in a wide big broad who's more masculine than feminine, then yeah no problem...but would a woman, through the scope of her inherent femininity, bring something extra to the game, something of its own ? The behaving in front of a hot little bunny thing I agree, but is it enough...ALAS, IS IT ENOUGH ?!!!!!

HEYYY !!!!!!!! I may be a weirdo with insomnia issues who gets fkng wasted on clinical grade sleeping pills every once in a while and writes up the occasional spacey post or thread, but I am NOT an advocate of the whole 3D glasses thing at the cinema !!!....don't you dare call me shallow, I'm many things but I have spirituality Go...gosh darn it !!!!

Scotty, stay on topic, you're scaring the people away. What do you have to say about left-wing extremist female wrestlers picking up a whistle and refereeing the game of Rugby, a sport that is a symbol of virility, manhood ? And, a subsidiary question, does a woman in charge, with a whistle in her hand, evoke something interesting visually, nay erotic ? But please, focus on the second part...it's by far the worst part of going to the cinema these days, 3D glasses man.
