no actally, before all the f***heads in the nz hip-hop scene thought they were from la, it was listenable. and then the old school skating rap from back in the day was also listenable.

the main thing about rap/pop/techno etc that bugs me alot is that the actual music of it, no credit is given to the members. its like ooh slim shady, ooh tupac, ooh 50 cent. but all the do is sing. often badly. where as for rock bands its like, jimi hendrix burning his guitar, or jimmy page pulling out a violin stick on his guitar, or a drum solo by mr grohl etc.
New Zealand hip-hop represents like 1% of the hip-hop/rap out there
Apart from shihad it is not like NZ rock is very good either. (I do enjoy Blindspott but seriously they are definately not talented).

While they do not make their own music (except producers who rap like Dre, Hi-Tek, Oh No), rap is generally lyrically better than rock. This is of course all my own opinion.

Evans Blue - A Cross And A Girl Named Blessed [/b]
gud point....but sum of the lyrics in todays 'rap' are written bullshit thats only there to confuse little kids into buying it coz its the "in" thing ta do..and thats how they get there pockets big when a gud majority of there raps are over exaggerated so that rapper can b glorified more..i believe its a fase thing...it will pass bye the commercial treatment of rap..and hiphop will have its once cherished rap art back in its natural form...where messages were aimd at the hiphop community/culture and teaching there kids to move in a more positive direction in life...otha then talking a whole bunch o **** to people who dont care nothing for the heritage of that music genre

people classify hiphop just as rap..but there are otha artforms that make it the subculture it is..dj/turntablist,graf art, emcee'ing, beat boxing and breakdancing...all have been major influences in todays entertainment and at times exposed to much....

the situation in nz is cool...but i like the aussie style better as they rap more realistically...plus they have the best beatboxer and best battle emcee in the world..nz hiphop is too 'out there'..i dont see we have a strong enough foundation to support more big acts like scribe, tha decepticonz,p money etc...

coz there are too many guys here trynna be the next 50cent rather then voicing there own talent and voices....

i thank che fu,dam native, dlt, king kapisi and as of late p-money....as people who have bought hiphop to nz and made it a part of tha kiwi culture..and blended in our life styles with this hiphop culture and made it our own as have europe and australia have done...those guys i mentioned are the only real pioneers i can compare to tha likes of rakim, krs one,dj premier, nwa etc..

kiwis should follow those examples of che fu etc...instead of the guys overseas

now...lets banana dance :bana:

Yeah I wasn't really talking about the commercial stuff. As then it would be 50 Cent Vs Simpleplan sorta thing which are a disgrace to both genres. Agree on the whole culture thing Chiro, not that I'm into it...rock is still my favourite, but hip-hop does deserve respect.
And who are some good Aussie artists? I've heard no Aussie hip-hop bar Hilltop Hoods.

tbh, im not much of a nz rock fan at the moment. everythings emo punk or indy. goes to most of todays music, hence why i listen to led zep, pink floyd, metallica, nirvana, 'stones, the who, deep purple etc...

so? i will consider listening to a whole entire rap song, once a hip-hop/rap star can pull of a song, with no lyrics, or go 8min without singing. lyrics/vocals are the last part of the song to be put in. in rock, it goes, guitar, bass, drums, vocals. rap - someone elses music, play it backwards, vocals. vocals only carry messages and sometimes a rythum, but basically, if you think lyrics are the be all, and end all, go listen to opra.

What I was saying in the first part is that you are basing your opinion of hip-hop off whats out there in New Zealand. If you did the same for rock you would say it sucks too.

Yeah I should of said vocals rather than lyrics, because the rhyme and flow is also a big part of hip-hop. And have you never heard of instrumentals?

8 Minutes let alone 4 minutes of Guitar, bass and drums is as boring as hell, 1-2 min interludes/intros are cool though.

But anyway I'm going to stop here as things do not seem to be going anywhere.

yeh gud point sambad..but it depends on taste too..

guitar solos and drum solos are very cool to me
but so is a dj cutting up tha decks for a gud 5min jam....

and yo serge!...has looptroop got a new album?...my bro had there one they released in like 2001..pretty fresh hiphop music

Yeah it is a taste thing as I find all the famous old rock bands* (Zep, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Floyd etc) boring as hell.

Looptroop released Fort Europa last year. It is a wicked album. You should also check Promoe out who is the lead rapper/singer for looptroop. Hes got two awesome albums 'Government Music' and 'The Long Distance Runner'.

*This excludes Nirvana and The Beatles

Secret Machines - Alone Jealous and Stoned.

Amazing song, really love it.

The Black Eyed Peas - Pump It

Love driving to this found myself doing 70mph in a 40 :s
