Warm up matches

Kings beaten by the Griquas 27-30. Not even a full strength Griquas side TBH while the Kings have pretty much showed their hand. I see dark days ahead for them.

Southern Kings:

Tries: Luke Watson, Sergeal Petersen, Penalty try
Conversion: Demetri Catrakilis (3)
Penalty Goals: Demetri Catrakilis (2)

GWK Griquas:
Tries: Leon Karemaker, Burton Francis, Simon Westraadt
Conversions: Burton Francis (3)
Penalty Goals: Burton Francis (3)

lol who are the Griquas?

The Griquas represent the Northern Cape based in Kimberley in Diamond country and are one of 14 SA provincial rugby unions. They are the 6th team in the Currie cup premier division alongside the Free State (Cheetahs), North Tranvaal (Bulls), Kwa-zulu Natal (Sharks), WP (Stormers) and Transvaal (Lions). They are a feeder team to the Cheetahs though the Sharks and Bulls end up with a lot of their players (like Matfield) after they show promise in the Currie Cup. TBF the Griquas are a dangerous team to face in the Currie cup when the other teams' Boks are unavailable. The Kings are in the Currie cup 1st division still and failed to make the step up through relegation/promotion (the Cheetahs ended bottom of the log last year and beat the Kings home and away) so it's not too much of a surprise.

The Currie cup (donated by sir Donald Currie) was first given to the Griquas by the touring B&I Lions side of 1891 because they gave them the toughest match. The Griquas traditionally have a hard as nails pack tough at the break down and young free running backs though they don't have much in terms of cash and thus consistency in players.

A shame really, but the lack of funds in rugby these days simply means you are doomed to eternal mediocrity, no one wants to play in the middle of nowhere for next to nothing in pay.

I do enjoy watching the griquas cuase their annual upsets though, they almost always seem to knock either the Sharks or Cheetahs or Bulls or WP at least once a year, and sometimes up until about just past the halfway mark of the Currie cup can actually lead the log.

one of my favorite underdog teams.
