The Hurricanes took another step in their preparations for this year's Vodacom Super 14 when they outclassed the Brumbies 26-5 in hot conditions in Wellington Friday night.

The home side scored four tries and displayed exceptional defence to stop the Brumbies, who only scored their points in the final minutes of the clash.

While the Brumbies spent long periods in the Hurricanes half, they were denied time and again by the defence, with Hurricanes scrumhalf Piri Weepu knocking a ball out of Brumbies flanker Henry Vanderglas' hands as he was diving over to score.

Against the run of play Hosea Gear opened the scoring for the home side.

In the second half centre Charlie Ngatai, who replaced Ma'a Nonu, scored after a sprint down the touchline and a chip and chase to gather in the in-goal area.

Hooker Dane Coles scored shortly afterwards, after fullback Cory Jane flipped the ball over his head backwards into the hooker's arms.

Lock Jason Eaton got his name onto the scoresheet in the 70th minute, forcing his way over from a lineout drive in the corner to give the Canes a 26-0 lead.

For the Brumbies, replacement lock Sitaleki Tamani finally crossed the line five minutes from the end to give his side some points in the fixture.

The Hurricanes play their next Super 14 pre-season match against the Chiefs in Rotorua next weekend.

Scores:

Hurricanes – tries: Hosea Gear, Charlie Ngatai, Dane Coles, Jason Eaton. Conversions: Aaron Cruden 2, Willie Ripia

Brumbies – try: Sitaleki Tamani[/b]
