Tri Nations XV 2009

Why do I keep seeing Woodcock's name when Benn Robinson has clearly been the most dominant loosehead in the competition...

If there was to be only one player from Australia to make such a team it would be Robinson...

Agreed.

Francois Steyn has been by far the best 15 in this tournament so far...[/b]
Agreed. How people are picking the Milky Bar Kid over him is ludicrous.
O'Connor will be outstanding, but this in this tournament, although doing a couple of quality things, his relative size and inexperience made sure he wasn't the best 15.

  1. Benn Robinson
  2. Bismarck du Plessis
  3. Ben Alexander
  4. Bakkies Botha
  5. Victor Matfield
  6. Heinrich Brussouw
  7. Rocky Elsom
  8. Pierre Spies
  9. Fourie du Preez
  10. Morne Steyn
  11. Bryan Habana
  12. Jaque Fourie
  13. Jean de Villiers
  14. Sitiveni Sivivatu
  15. James O'Connor

I thought O'Connor was great in the last Springboks - Australia test and Steyn was great in the last All Blacks - Springboks test. O'Connor is a young player who has showed signs of promise and class without making the continuous dumb, and at times match turning, mistakes that usually riddle young players' games (i.e Toeava). Steyn has been around for a couple of years now and has shown what he can do without truly delivering on his promise. That is why O'Connor is in there for me, I don't know about everyone else. Plus, as valuable as Steyn was in the last match with the boot, I enjoyed watching O'Connor's general play more in the previous game.

My XV would be:

15) Francois Steyn
14) Sitiveni Sivivatu (Some "weird" moments, but he's delivered)
13) Jacques Fourie (Conrad Smith would've taken his place had he not gotten injured - but Fourie was really outstanding)
12) Matt Giteau (He is a different player when he covers inside centre)
11) Bryan Habana (This guy has improved a LOT and became a very complete player)
10) Morne Steyn (Not as flashy but he is incredibly effective)

9) Fourie du Preez (Perfect. Just perfect)

8) Pierre Spies (Not so great on attack, but he showed some really good defensive skills)
7) Richie McCaw (What can I say? This guy's everywhere)
6) Juan Smith*
5) Victor Matfield*
4) Bakkies Botha*
3) Ben Alexander (Great scrummaging by this bloke)
2) Bismarck du Plessis*
1) Tony Woodcock*

* = The usual. These lads were dominant, especially Matfield and Botha.

Players which i think DEFINATLEY should be in there: Bryan Habana, fourie du Preez (man of the tourny), Matt giteau (top try scorer, gr8 consistency), Victor Matfield, Ben Alexander

heres the rest of my team

15) Adam ashley-cooper (didnt play at fullback, but he is very capable at it and should def be in the team, plus o'connor n steyn had some bad moments)
14) Sitiveni Sivivatu (always a danger)
13) Jacques Fourie (If Conrad Smith didnt get injured he's prob be here)
12) Matt Giteau (Gotta be in the team and plays better at inside centre)
10) Morne Steyn (Didnt do anything wrong, gr8 kicker, not flashy but effective n carter not at his best)
11) Bryan habana (best winger in the world i think, lethal speedster, good defence with try saving tackles)

9) Fourie du Preez (as mentioned b4. Perfect)

8) Pierre Spies (Good defensive skills, performed better then the other 8's)
7) George smith or Richie Mccaw (George still effective n richie not at his best but still very good. This one is anyones for the taking with brussow not far behind either)
6) Juan Smith (maybe rocky elsom, wasnt sure on this one)
5) Victor Matfield (def needs to be here, line-out expert)
4) Bakkies Botha (strong player)
3) Ben Alexander (really showed his class, awesome scrum)
2) Bismarck du Plessis (consistent n strong)
1) Tony Woodcock (strong as usual)

The Lions are average and Brussouw should clearly be picked ahead of Elsom. The only reason the Lions didn't lose there eighth game in a row was South Africa rested there top players. Any composite team struggles because of a lack of combinations.

8 losses in a row..

I didnt know that, dam thats quite a bit for a team thats been picked from a very very big list lol..

Brussow is an openside flanker, Rocky Elmson is a Blind side flanker, I guess that is why he is in there instead of Brussow. I would take Mils Muliena way over Adam Ashley-Cooper...
