TRF's 2014 FIFA World Cup

Did anybody catch the opening ceremony?? I couldn't hear anything from any of the singers microphones... It was rather disappointing.

The only upside of that ceremony was J-lo's tata's and that other girl making stripper moves...

Completely agree.

Was hoping it would be a carnival type thing but no.

Hey guys, not fair! I'm not saying there isn't structure, its just that I don't see it; I just don't know enough about it to understand what I'm seeing. As I said, they appear to me to be just passing the ball around to each other without doing anything proactive, like they're waiting for something to happen. Sure there was some nice pieces of individual skill (Oscar's goal for example), but what I don't see is set plays (other than at a free kick of course).

You try watching AFL (Aussie Rules) without understanding the game, you'll think it looks like a big game a scrag, a disorganised bunch of guys knocking on and kicking the ball aimlessly around a big oval paddock. Its only when you watch a number of matches closely and listen to the commentators that you start to see some of the tactics; such as zones, clusters, flooding, rushed behinds, running in waves and rotating forwards.

AFL has a tactic refered to as 'rushed behinds'? o_O

Big E! Come and see this!

Anyway, I'll watch the 2011 final rematch between Espana and de Nederlande tonight. I see my team is playing England on Sunday. I'll watch that. Somehow I find myself sharing Samrtcooky's sentiments- play seems very random to my admittedly untrained eye- where are the set plays. Something we did playing inter-department at varsity which I havn't seen on any big stage is any team throwing in the ball from the sideline with the teams lining up like they would with a corner kick because of the danger for a header goal- why is that?

Good Sir, I'm sorry but you seem to have my peculiar yet refined sexual fantasies confused with a mere vulgar practice for the low classes...I find it a bit insulting to be quite honest.

Quite enjoying the Netherlands/Spain game.

Loved the Netherlands guy going down like someone had smashed him in the head with a brick, and staying down for ages, but like 30s after the Spanish guy had barely brushed past him

Drew Holland in office pool. Enjoying this WC as some sort of Dutch-Croat-Welsh hybrid

Wow.

I don't follow football outside of the Euros and WC - but Since 98 I've supported the Netherlands.

Not a bad start.

Good man. Been a fan of the Netherlands since I started watching football.

Hahahahahaha, cracking result.

closest thing to you, ay ? Wales and SA don't play, so Holland's the nearest "relative" :p
I hate Spain and this is payback almighty for the Dutch. Spain didn't even manage a single score, and their 1 point came off cheating. They kept falling the entire match and were completely dominated by the intensity of Holland. Spain got incredibly lucky not to concede that 6th one.
Brilliant, Holland. Serves Spain right, their game is horribly boring squeezing the life out of teams on defense and then playing yoyo with the ball on attack. Fk em, and this is a nice large one they take tonight.
Really enjoyed watching this.

Costa should of been sent off too. Van Persies header was brilliant. 3-5-2 gonna be the new fashionable formation?

I'm happy by the defeat of the f**king Socceroos. Australia must support Rugby Union.

Estas un poco obsesivo con tu odio hacia el futbol, yo soy fan de ambos deportes y no hay incompatibilidad en ello. No seas tan perseguido, son mucho los futboleros que siguen el rugby...

Was so happy to see Spain lose. Their 'brand' of football (aka Barcelona) appears to be designed to send everyone including the fans and opposing team to sleep, then score one goal to win. (unless, of course you come within a yard of them, then they fall over, call for a card, or surround the referee like a bunch of meerkats).

Haha, sounds like the sort of thing Big Ewis would like. But its for real. A "behind" is when the ball goes between a "goal post" (the tall one) and a "behind post" (the short one next to it). This scores 1 point (ball kicked between the Goal Posts by an attacking player scores 6 points)

A "behind" is also scored when the ball touches a post on the way though, or touches the hands or body of any player. A goal can only be scored directly and cleanly off the boot of an attacking player.

The"rushed behind" is a tactic used by team under heavy defensive pressure to intentionally put the ball through for a behind, conceding a point (rather than risk six points).

Anyone see Cahills header? I thought he was a central midfielder?! He leaps like a salmon or a number 4. He's only like 175cm tall which is tiny for the role he's playing. Top player at Everton.

Yeah, he has a crazy leap. Has always been deadly in the air. (of course he was leaping against Medel, who will give 100% every game, but the poor lad cannot grow 8" to defend a header. (as we(Cardiff) noticed to our detriment in the Premier League)) :p
