I do believe you can get away with just a drivers license when traveling by Eurostar. You don't need a passport.

Remember that once on the continent, you'll be within the Schengen area which is effectively borderless.

Well thats interesting because usually when you're running on the cross channel ferry you can just flash your driving license. We've done it plenty of times on the booze cruise runs.

We are the only nation that requires it because we are an island[/b]

Or because you're not part of the Schengen agreement?
Maybe it's to have an official evidence of identity? I don't believe the British have Identity cards?

I looked into something, seeing if I could give any one coming over a place to sleep but it seems like it's a lost cause. (Right now my boyfriend only stays at our future place during the week, so we wouldn't get in the way of his studies during the weekend if we slept there, but it seems like since he'll be suffering from exams pretty soon so he'll be staying there 24/7) There goes my excellent idea.

wow, this Topic is booming,

I completely agree with the Belgium idea :D as the weekend before I'm abroad and I'm always in a mood to pubstep :D

It is more because the UK & Ireland aren't part of the Schengen area than the UK specifically being the only EU member to require border checks.

The whole thing is just an exercise in public relations anyway as it cuts down, what? 30 seconds from your journey? And if you go abroad you'll be taking your passport with you anyway just in case you need some extra ID. There are problems such as those who don't have passports and are just claiming assylum or have a green card or whatever (this does happen on a regular basis, especially if your government is witholding your passport details for example). In this case you have to have not only documents entitling you of your right to stay in your chosen country in the EU but also a Schengen pass to permit movement within the Schengen area.

The irony is that without a passport, you can't go any further and thus, you are effectively a prisoner on a very very large super penninsula called Western Europe.

I'll go to Belgium.

What will it be then: Bruges; Brussels; Liège?[/b]

I don't quite think you understand the plan. The idea is for a group of us to go to Belgium..not send M Two One on his own..

Seems Belgium comes as favorite :D

Brussels smells (it really does, Antwerp doesn't smell like roses but seriously, Brussels reeks!), Bruges is slightly boring unless you're into water and lace (not the sexy kind), and I don't live in Liège.

Why not come to Antwerp? XD Thomas wouldn't mind coming to Antwerp either!
