Exeter looking at Will Butt
He's certainly going to be a good signing for someone, and probably suits Baxter's style well.
Id love to keep him, but he's too good to be 4th./5th choice anywhere (I'd rather sacrifice Hennessey or even Redpath - but that's where contract timings comes to the fore)

FdK in talks with Newcastle and Sale
I love Faf but not sure I'd take him back - 35 at the start of next season and will have a considerable wage bill

I think he would be perfect for Newcastle though, they need experienced halfbacks and Redbull would love him as a character/the eyes he'd bring

Quirke in talks with Gloucester (Telegraph brewing Robson prob shows how much poop Fissler throws)
I could see why Raffi would want to leave to try and nail down a starting shirt/get a fresh start after all the injuries - not like we've not been giving him opportunities, though, and considering how much time we've put into his rehab etc. it'd smart a bit seeing him go

Surely he wouldn't be willing to give up on England yet though?
Get fit, and he's still in the conversation as it is.

That would be a good experiment tbf

England consistently picking Raffi regardless of fitness/form vs Gloucester being invisible in the eyes of the RFU

Turns out he's still in contract anyway, obviously doesn't as much these days as it once did, but I doubt Gloucester are buying him out of a contract considering the reports about their finances recently

The Gloucester invisibility piece has had some truth to it over the years but Seb Atkinson and Arthur Clark are doing their bit to change that. Will Joseph probably will as well.

Furbank to Quins apparently a done deal
Saints wanted short term with clauses and Quins offered a straight 3 year deal

Guess Saints and Tigers have had similar thoughts with their George in terms of making sure they are not committed to long term deal that will leave them potentially out of value massively

I’d be gutted if he left but then we have back three players coming out of everywhere at the moment so can see the club not wanting to commit.

A real shame though.

Boyhood club etc. Why would he leave for Quins other than for £?

I get that players want to maximise earnings, short careers etc. Just a bit of a shame really.

Felt a bit similarly about Martin although younger and I think Sarries could improve him and from an Eng perspective he’d be playing alongside Itoje.

At 29 he is going to want more than a 1 year deal so I understand that. I don’t like it but I get it.

Another one of those that makes me think the prem needs some sort of leniency in the cap for homegrown players. Saints shouldn't be losing players they want to keep just because they happened to produce a bit of a golden generation.

Although, I took a flick through the England squad there and was surprised to see how many are one club guys or only moved because their first club went bust. Only real slut is George Ford.

You kinda do, you get credits for players who came through your academy, though do sort of agree that maybe more should be done for proper senior players who have been there their whole careers - maybe scale that payment up over the course their career or something

I'm not sure if Saints not offering a big deal would be cap related though, in this case - they seem to be more cautious about his arm injury (and will know more about it than anyone) and I'm not sure if they actually spend up to the cap? Certainly feels like their outgoing players massively outweighed their signings last year. They seem more interested in breaking even/trying to turn a profit than spending as much as they're allowed to and hoping for the best

That's fair I suppose. One of those thatll be settled in hindsight I suppose, bad business if he does well at Quins. He's the type of glue player who can be invaluable for a club over the course of a season, obviously fitness dependant in this case. A big part in raising the level of some of the young guys in the Saints backline very quickly imo.

I was thinking about players who get injured regularly and it's tough. For starters they play a sport where injuries are common. Having said that, there is a difference between unlucky and injury prone. Some players do spend more time on the sidelines than most. I feel for them, especially as they have a short career, but when most clubs are struggling financially they really do need value for money. It's a rock and a hard place, but ultimately if a business goes under like 3 clubs did recently then no one will have a job and that's still a real possibility for clubs.
