I have never understood that. I'm a back three player myself, and have never had to choose a wing.
Obviously players will have preferences, even if its just they like 14 more than 11, but why pretend there's a significant difference in the position?
Surely a wing is a wing, even at top level?

If you left step is way better than the right one.
If you tackle better on the right.
If you're left/right footed
Etc...

I know I prefer being on the left wing. Positioning, catching long passes, sidestepping, defense, it's all easier on the left for me.
