The Golf Thread

It basically boild down to
"dem the rules"
"No material differnce"
"Nobody was predicting that American fightback so ita not like Europe were gaming the system"

I do hope when the Americans come over for the next one there are treated with absolute courtesy and respect. It would be a massive shame if the whole sport gets dragged into the gutter and what the Americans have done becomes the new norm.

Ok, playing devils advocate here (but also making a half truthful comment while at the same time my tongue being in my cheek) but I quite like verbal abuse in golf

Let's be honest, golf is boring as **** so anything that makes it more like Happy Gilmore is ok by me.

Mind you, to counter my own point, I did see Rory Mcilroy (who was in Happy Gilmore 2 so massive props to him for that) say that he doesn't have any problem with being bantered or shouted at or what have you but only asked for them to do that between strokes rather than in his backswing which seems fair enough to be honest.

I think there is a line between banter and abuse. Straight up abuse should never be tolerated. Also when it comes to then actually taking the shot, people should be quiet.

Some sports also have a culture of conducting yourself in a certain way, undermining that is bad as it's often virtually impossible to get that culture back once it's gone.

Yeah that's fair but then I think how crap it would be to go to football and not be allowed to chant "the referees a ******" etc

Your point about different sporting traditions and not doing it when people are about to swing is fair but, I dunno, makes it a bit more interesting.

I consider golf like darts really. Both sports where you can be a obese dude and still do well, obviously different cultures but I know which sport I would rather watch if it was a choice between golf and darts and I hate both sports.

Is anything really a sport if you don't need to change your footwear to do it.

There'll be a bit of craic, the difference will be that it'll be totally confined to what the US golfers do on the golf course or in their golf careers.

Rory was reportedly showered with comments about his wife, parents etc... some of which were along the lines of "I hope Erica gets [insert disease or assault of your choice]". European fans chanting "You're getting sacked in the morning" at Keegan isn't quite the same...

The Ryder Cup is fun because it's boisterous and fans get the opportunity to cheer for players and teams together in a way that's not possible in any other event (apart from the presidents cup but it's just a hollowed out Ryder Cup really). But as Rory said, the fans should support their own team and not abuse the other.

Golfers can use a club to hit a ball and make it travel as fast as a Ferrari F40 at top speed and there's no obese players getting paid to play. Not the most athletic sport of course and your average weekend warrior is barely playing a sport, same as a 5 aside pub team, but the top guys are all athletes.

Take Russell Henley, arguably the most skillful player on tour and world number three through elite consistency and an incredibly well rounded game. But he's 20 yds shorter than the tour average off the tee and he hasn't sniffed a major, has one semi-notable win and couldn't really put his mark on this week because bigger, stronger and more powerful guys are able to give themselves easier shots at pins.

As an aside, Russell Henley and Shane Lowry were both nearly 4 shots better than the average in singles yesterday. It was probably one of the all time great singles matches in the Ryder and we weren't shown a shot until the last 4 holes by the local broadcaster.

Ok you win this round.

By the way, not that it needs to be said, but saying some vile **** like you said some were saying about Rory's wife is indefensible and deserves a 9 iron round your head.

I remember a footballer, who had recently lost his little newborn baby, was shouted at by some idiot that he was glad his baby died. He ran into the crowd to bash the guy but was stopped. I wish he wasn't.

Rory already come out and said he wants none that **** from the home fans in Ireland as retliation and they are not welcome if they do. Fair play to him.

European Ryder Cups have long been more fun because theres way more a festival atmosphere with banter than outright hostility.

It's a shame they won't be able to prevent Americans going to the next Ryder cup as what you want for the Amercian team isn't abuse, it's utter silence.

Cheer the Europeans, and listen to the crickets when the spams play.
