There'll be a bit of craic, the difference will be that it'll be totally confined to what the US golfers do on the golf course or in their golf careers.
Rory was reportedly showered with comments about his wife, parents etc... some of which were along the lines of "I hope Erica gets [insert disease or assault of your choice]". European fans chanting "You're getting sacked in the morning" at Keegan isn't quite the same...
The Ryder Cup is fun because it's boisterous and fans get the opportunity to cheer for players and teams together in a way that's not possible in any other event (apart from the presidents cup but it's just a hollowed out Ryder Cup really). But as Rory said, the fans should support their own team and not abuse the other.
Golfers can use a club to hit a ball and make it travel as fast as a Ferrari F40 at top speed and there's no obese players getting paid to play. Not the most athletic sport of course and your average weekend warrior is barely playing a sport, same as a 5 aside pub team, but the top guys are all athletes.
Take Russell Henley, arguably the most skillful player on tour and world number three through elite consistency and an incredibly well rounded game. But he's 20 yds shorter than the tour average off the tee and he hasn't sniffed a major, has one semi-notable win and couldn't really put his mark on this week because bigger, stronger and more powerful guys are able to give themselves easier shots at pins.
As an aside, Russell Henley and Shane Lowry were both nearly 4 shots better than the average in singles yesterday. It was probably one of the all time great singles matches in the Ryder and we weren't shown a shot until the last 4 holes by the local broadcaster.
