Springboks or Proteas? Would a name change have made a big difference?

Given they might be the most pure extant homo sapiens (now it is known that whites, blacks or yellows have genetical admixture with neanderthals and other primitive homo species) that got out of Central Africa, no.

Of course I know, is a XX century development. The point is our former blindside flanker didn't miss the Voortrekkers age, but the apartheid one. Since the guy is under 35 right now, I don't believe that thinking of his could be of his own crop, but his parent's

And that was the hypocrisy of our former 6 (your 7), missing an era he didn't live as an adult so he could have had a better understunding of the issues, being a white supremacist and at the same time, wanting the blacks and the mulattoes (you call them colored I suppose) for the heavy and dirty work but the lower wages.

Yeah, but the south african rulers of that era gave them a second rate treating because of their race

BS!! Some of those people are white, and they got very good jobs or opened their own businesses, regardless of race!!

This thread quickly changed into a debate about our history. Let's get back to the topic, I for one would have been unhappy if the emblem were to be changed, as our current government has an obsession about changing everything that belonged to the past, even a emblem that originated from a time long before apartheid existed.

Crikey!

This has swayed far from what I was wanting to hear peoples views about. Could we keep things rugby gentleman, 1995 RWC before during and after please

Are you referring to that day in Soweto FNB stadium where a ticket got you in to see back to back Bafana and Springbok matches? I heard about that as was in SA at the time in the middle of one of your national parks. Would love to have made an International but could only fit in a Bulls CC match! Can't wait to revisit.

I haven't come across this before. Do you have any more details? Dates?

I take it that you heard about the name 'Luke Watson' before. He was a former Springbok rugby player that wasn't very supportive of the Springboks emblem. His father Cheeky refused to play for the Springboks due to the apartheid system. Watson junior made the infamous 'vomit on the Bok jersey' comment that enraged many rugby fans!

This was on the 17th of August 2013. In celebration of Nelson Mandela (every year in Ausgust we have a tribute day to Madiba, even though it's not a public holiday).

SA played against Argentina, which we won 73-13. (it was part of the Rugby Championship tournament). And then Bafana Bafana played against Burkina Faso, and won 2-0.

I went to the World Cup in 2010. I thought there were people from all races wearing all the countries sports gear when I was there. It seems that black and white people support the springboks now? I was very impressed as expected a load of racism. Your country is more united than most.

Sorry to jump topics but to come back to the diversification of rugby in terms of changing the national teams of countries to suit the racial demographics of the country, i do believe its absolute nonsense. Let the best players play as simple as that. if the country of Norway has around 5 million people of which more than 95 % are white it doesn't mean their sports teams have to represented by a racial balance close to that number. it absolute nonsense to say we have to integrate players into national teams to promote a sense of unity. If the player is the best in the position pick him. If you want more players of other races to be part of the international fold of your country then invest in grass roots level and create interest in the targeted areas don't go and exclude good players just because you want to represent all races. It should not work that way, may the best team win not the team with the best racial balance that mirrors the demographics of the country.

People should be proud if the springboks win a world cup, rugby championship regardless of the color of the players representing the team but rather based on the quality of the sportsmen the country has produced.

You are right, bud

What the hell is Protea? Is that like Rooibos, or something?

das

lol...I just looked up 'protea' and discovered it IS like rooibos! LOL...Naming the Boks the proteas is about as silly as naming a team after a waratah plant. Oh...wait... (I once thought the 'waratahs' was a cool name, back when I thought it was some sort of exotic vicious wart hog. Still, it's not as bad as the Rabbitohs - that just sounds like a breakfast cereal.)

Well, actually it wouldn't be so silly.

The Protea is SA's national flower. And is the national sporting emblem. If you look at teams like Western Province and the Blue Bulls during the Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup, their teams have other indigenous flowers on their jersey's. The WP has a Disa and the Blue Bulls have the Baberton Daisy.

Huh...didn't know that. What is it with rugby and flowers? ;) I guess I'm just not used to it. In the States most teams are usually named after something fierce, or fast. Granted, college/university and school teams can have odd names, but it's not common in the Pro sports.

South Africa has other symbols besides the springboks and proteas. How about the Blue Cranes? Or even the Yellowwoods? Although...yellow is associated with cowardice, so maybe that's not good. Heck, even the Galjoens sounds tougher than the Proteas...though pronouncing it might be hard for other countries. Honestly, nothing sounds as good as the Springboks; it's both sexy cool and implies speed and agility, which is everything a team needs to project to both fans and to opponents alike.

It's not a rugby thing, it's province/district/area thing.

The main reason why the other National items aren't used is because they aren't found in most areas. the Galjoen would only apply to the coastal areas. the Yellowwood would only apply to the Knysna area etc.

The flowers are chosen as it's a form of identification with that area. Long ago, the Baberton Daisy was one of the flowers most seen in the Pretoria/Noord-Transvaal Area. The Baberton Daisy is still an emblem for the Northern Province, Limpopo, sports teams. In fact, My high school swimming kit for the Limpopo Province has that emblem on it.
