Sonny Bill Williams News + Progress in ITM Cup

whats with all the Crotty man love sam?
I thought Williams was brilliant

I guess I could ask the same for you and Williams couldnt I woody lol.

Look before you even started posting here I was the one (felt like the only one) that stuck up for Sonny, oh and Cymro. Im a big SBW fan woody dont worry about that. Before SBW even played many doubted him here on our forum but they had their respected reasons. I even had a little forum war over SBW but in that war I took in what the SBW haters had to say, so I could understand where they're coming from. One of their points was along the lines of SBW coming in and just taking some other hard working kiwis jersey and I kind of relate that to Ryan Crotty. Ryan was with Canterbury before Sonny and is a good player, I just dont want to see a player like Ryan slowly throwin away and forgotten. Thats why I hoped he had a good game this week and he did.:)

yea obviously, I was aware of that irony but I'm a fan cos I reckon he's an awesome player, being a fan of a random player because other people think his spots been unfairly taken?.... bit backwards to me. Anyway who cares, Mr Crotty has "unfairly" taken the place of plenty of inferior players in his time. Best players get selected and the players everyone wants to select get paid the most shock horror

Whats with biting at Sam? He was just explaining that he likes Ryan Crotty as a player. He didn't say that he liked him because his spot was "unfairly taken", that's unfair, he actually said he likes him as a player.

Mr Crotty has "unfairly" taken the place of plenty of inferior players in his time? When, and what has this got to do with it?

Sam was only saying that some other posters on the forum had said that they felt that Sonny Bill was coming over here largely unproven and commands a big fee and starting spot due to that fee and he's really more of a brand than a player at the moment. He never said that he'd initally had that view of SBW at all, but merely said he'd listened to some points these other posters had.

Anyhow SBW is not a rugby legend as yet. He could be a great player, but he needs time to become one in rugby.

How likely is it that SBW will start/get decent gametime early on in the Super 15? I'm not sure who his competition will be for the 12 and the bench spots (not really sure of which clubs make up which franchise/who's playing well/who's established etc.). He'll obviously get game time at some point, but will interesting to see how much faith they put into him in the first few rounds. Still a while to go though, i suppose, so he could really cement his spot, or burn out (hypothetically, obv, i don't expect that to happen)
I'm interested to see how he'll do on the next level up, as he's obviously doing well in the ITM.

Hmm??..I dont know where you got that idea from woody, I checked my post and that conclusion is not there, just a little curious as to how you got that from what I posted. Anyway Ive enjoyed watching Ryan play when I first saw him last year and thought he really played well for the junior All Blacks '09. I havent all of a sudden liked him for sympathetic type reasons lol.:)

Thanks Ivey. Your last sentence is how it is for Sonny.:)

Looks like these "other posters" were proven wrong. SBW turned down the biggest offer in Rugby history of $6million to come here to NZ for $550k. Although $550k is still a very large amount of money for NZ standards, he turned down alot more just for the "chance" to make the WC AB squad. So the haterz can't say he's only in it for the money anymore...

The Crusaders midfield will be made up almost entirely made up of Canterbury players - SBW, Fruean, Crotty, and Adam Whitelock (currently injured), with Kade Poki and possibly Tom Marshall from Tasman as utility players who can cover the midfield. He should be almost assured of starting in the 12 jersey inside Fruean, as he is currently rated ahead of Crotty, who is rated ahead of the injured Adam Whitelock, who is probably rated ahead of Poki or Marshall....

Well, I actually didn't say that I was one of those posters. I was just backing up Sam that he wasn't one of them essentially.

Also, he's proven that money isn't his overall motivator, that's awesome. It's still early days in his rugby career and it remains to be seen how illustrious that career will be until he actually achieves some major milestones.

Playing Super 15 - Possibly in the future
Scoring his first Super 15 try - Possibly in the future
Being an outstanding Super 15 player - Possibly in the future
Playing for the All Blacks - Possibly in the future
Scoring his first test try - Possibly in the future
Being an outstanding All Black - Possibly in the future
Being in the World Cup Squad - Possibly in the future
Being a major asset in the World Cup campaign - Possibly in the future

You see, I'm on the fence about the guy. The talent is there, but talent alone is not a guarantee. He needs to pass many milestones before he can be rated super highly as a player. He's a good player right now. That's about it.

I hope he does very well. New Zealand needs a major new rugby asset, but he is not it right now.

I didn't say you were one of these "other posters". I was referring to the "other posters" (aka. haters) that you were referring to in your post which is what Sam was referring to... If that makes sense?

Sam was only saying that some other posters on the forum

He had his best game in NZ in my opinion, with a good try included.

I was/am one of the "haterz" (what the unintelligent call people with a different view point), not because I didn't think he was impressive, but because I think it sends a bad messgae to the NZ public, and I think all this great work and improvement in SBW, will be gone overseas after 2011. I always conceded he was a good athlete, albeit the amount of attention he gets from the commentators is unlike almost any rugby player I've ever seen, however I don't like the message that a player can ask for a big price (even not as big in Toloun), to play in an All Black jersey. Has he been worth his mony in interest? Yes, it seems the public can't get enough of him, either to love or hate him, but for the NZRU to offer that kinf of money, to an unproven player with a somewhat shady buisness history, with almost a guarentee that they'll get a All Black jersey, I can still safely say I disagree with. He's doing better than I expected, I'll even concede that, but I think it's important to remember the investment Canterbury and NZ are putting into SBW. They're training him hard, focusing on what he needs to improve. Had that same effort been focused on a different player, you could probably have an equally skilled player, who would stick around in NZ longer.

Despite agreeing he's improved and doing better than I expected, I think woodward's opinion of him is definetly over inflated. Nonu has been one of the most important players in the AB's since 2008, and he just keeps showing signs of improving, now having a much better passing game and even to a lesser extent a kicking game. In my mind, SBW would have to be owning up like Jonah Lomu in the 1995 RWC, to warrant a spot in the starting XV come the semi finals and finals.

Olyy, SBW is almost guarenteed to start for the Crusaders. His biggest opposition for the jersey it Crotty, and SBW seems to be preferenced over him.

I know somewhere in this forum you've used that word 'hater' as well nick lol. Anyway we all know thats not what that word means and thats what matters, I cant be stuffed defining it through a provided googled dictionary link because we all know what it means.

I never made a bad reference to you nick or made any silly insinuations but you've owed up (to our old forum war over SBW) and I wasnt trying to get you to do that. I was trying to make an example for woody. I respected your opinions as I do others and will continue. You know me man Im the positive one (at least I feel like one).

One thing you did say nick in our earlier forum debate over SBW is now a realisation, the point that you made about SBW coming over and taking some hard working kiwis jersey. Ryan I feel is that hard working kiwi who now doesnt see more of his starting jersey, thats not to say SBW isnt a hard working athlete, Sonny does Boxing in the off season that is why he's so fit. Like I said before it seems to be happening to Ryan and like woody said and we all know, these things do happen. I just hope Crotty keeps playing like he did yesterday because he is a good player and I hope he doesnt dissapear to much into the shadows of Sonny.

ok maybe fair point about the Crotty thing but it's still random to keep mentioning him I think but whatever. Of course you think my opinion of him is over rated because its a prediction of where I think he will be in 12 months, he's not ahead of Nonu just yet

that was a very impressive sonny bill try. ok bad defence to start by orago by not having any defenders out wide. But the speed to run around and stay ahead of the cover defence was impressive. You expect sonny bill to be running through players and scoring close to the line. That was move than 50m try and no one even reall touched him.

He made a pretty spectacular line break tonight don't you think nick, that's another thing he can't do scratched off the list. Couple of mistakes though, not as good a game as last week but he still showed though hes still learning some things that hes a step above ITM cup level

I posted about this in another thread but everytime SBW gets the ball he is expected to do something spectacular, which to be fair is unfair on him. He looked ok tonight nothing flashy, the break was really his standout moment. Still to learn but I see him going on the EOYT.
