So what about this French hallion spitting on Peter Stringer...?

Two problems I have:
1. A long ban would be insane. It is disgusting and disrespectful, but not dangerous.
2. There are like 4 weeks left of the rugby season, one more if Stade Francais beat Perpignan to reach the Amlin final. He's not an international so what is a 20 week ban anyway? He'd miss just as many games as a 4 week ban. The summer just eats most of it away. It's a bizarre system... players should be banned for x club games and not allowed to play internationally while the ban is in effect.

I have never been spat at on a Rugby field thankfully.
It's disgusting but 52 weeks? I reckon it's excessive but **** it send a message.

It should be treated harshly but not in a way that it could in Fillol's career, he should miss the rest of this season and about four games of next season. I've been spat at in a gaelic football match, he missed but the hard man of our team gave him a few punches, he retaliated and that was all the ref saw so he got a red.

I think gouging is the worst offense on a rugby pitch, I was gauged in a game and it's incredibly scary, I started swinging at the guy and the ref stopped the game and called us over, I think he was going to send me off until he saw my eye.

**** that, full 52.

Is there a difference in how the French and British/Irish perceive spitting?

You forget Monty Python and the Holy Grail...

"I spit at you, you English Scum!"

So maybe this is a gesture of gratitude and friendship from a French perspective.

Personally a straight red could/would of changed the game if it had been spotted, I feel Stade Francais should be thrown out of every competition. And the ban should 30000000 days!

Agreed gouging is by far the worst offence IMO.
I got a finger quite far into my eye a few times but one particular instance riled me up enough to properly take a bit of action.
Next ruck I did my best to rearrange his facial structure. And I believe it should be mandatory punishment for those who gouge

So Fillol got 26 weeks, shortened to 14 for 'genuine remorse, exemplary record & strong character references'.

This also means that according to the citing people.

They think spitting is a worse crime than any of this eye gouging (9, 12, 8 weeks respectively).

Slamming a player on his neck (13 weeks).

Far worse than knocking a player out from behind with a cheap shot (5 weeks).

Stamping on a player's head (4 weeks).

And 7 times worse than viciously stamping on someone's ankle ligaments (2 weeks).

Thought Healy's was 3 weeks? I'm quibbling mind, it's a very absurd sense of proportion whatever the fine detail.

Gouging, spitting and intentionally trying to injure (not simply cause pain) should all be dealt with more severely than they are at the moment.
What is clear is that there are a lot of political issues in regard to "mitigating circumstances" the reduction of bans based on.

It is.

Spitting is a lowly, cowardly act. It is the ulitmate showing of disrespect. I'd rather be gouged, cheap shotted, stamped on etc than be spat on by a fellow player.

There's a few lads who've lost sight in an eye due to gouging. Would you rather be that guy than be spat on?

Ever been gouged? It's not a nice feeling.

Really? You would rather risk your eyes getting damaged and ending up like Gavin Quinnell? You'd rather be knocked out cold by a punch from behind and rushed to hospital and unable to play for a month? I don't see the logic, I'm not defending spitting but I don't buy the arguments that suggest it is worse than physical violence.

I also don't see how spitting is any more cowardly and disrespectful than poking someone's eyes either. Punching someone from behind where they can't see you actually seems more cowardly than spitting at someone where you take the risk that they could clobber you in the head.

I am not saying Fillol shouldn't be banned. And would have no problem with the sentence either, but in light of what his handed out for other incidents, 26 weeks is ridiculous.

Like I say, 14 weeks or 4 weeks, what's the difference at this point of the season?

There is a history where French players are concerned with long bans yet British Isles players, particularly when there ia an international match coming Messers Healy and Flood for instance, do not seem to get them no matter what they do!

Personally, think it is too long in view of the other bans that have been dished out over the last three months but 13 weeks means ******** as the season ends in less than 8 weeks!!

Be fair - they very actively tried to get Healy banned for more international matches, but couldn't!

He was actually given 10 weeks this season (up to mid-june) and four weeks next season (from mid-july). He still spends much of the suspension on holiday, though. I think 14 weeks is an appropriate ban. All the people in Duck's gifs should have gotten more than they did, though.

Then it is ridiculous by comparison............................
