[RWC2023] South Africa vs Ireland (23/09/2023)

What I don't get is how people would think Farrell would be influenced by the 7/1 split.

Andy Farrell was always going to go his own way regardless of how SA selected. We aren't wining no game reacting to opposition. We are winning playing our way.

Arrogance and stupidity. Why any of the top 4 teams would be influenced by the other teams selection is beyond me. They want to force the game their way not get dragged into playing someone elses.

Humble pie is gonna be on the menu soon enough. Might be the final instead of this weekend, but it's coming.

That's a good Ireland XV. I'd even go as far as to say I'd have the 3 Irish New Zealanders ahead of the actual New Zealanders in their positions.

Will SA spring any last minute surprises? Le Roux is arguably the most creative player available to them, will a last minute injury see him added to the bench? I'm still surprised that he hasn't been named.
If the 7/1 split was aimed at trying to influence the Irish selection, it doesn't appear to have worked. Have Rassienaber any other stunt up their collective sleeve to try to disconcert Faz et al? The next 48 hours will be spent living on my nerves, bring on Saturday!
On the contrary, I think Rasnaber would be happy that the Irish did not counter. But rarely do they care what the opposition are doing

Been coming 4 years for South Africa tbf lol
Sorry but we lost to Japan in the biggest upset of all time, then had Allister Coetzee and we went into free fall. Lost to Italy. Ate that pie for 3 years. Rassie only serves good braai meat. It's good to be the most hated again instead of what we were lol.

During press duties this week, Nienaber has said that the 7/1 split was decided to try to counter Ireland. That suggests that in this case they do care what the opposition are doing.

I think we've had more than our share of humble pie in every world cup... ever. I'm going to enjoy this period of Irish Rugby while it lasts and not check the horizon for storm clouds.

Besides, I actively like most of South Africas players, but of course I would love to put one over on them, especially as we got called "softies" on camera by Rassie in the last world cup.

I use my hatred to punch down at Scotland and Wales.

England will always be the most hated overall.

I like South Africa. New Zealand are the team I dislike the most.

I think its a bit odd to say that we don't change our tactics for the opposition (speaking for SA here). We did it through the last World Cup (we had two types of game plans, and different players that did each type which was mainly defined by which flyhalf we had on the field) - and we have actively said that we are picking players that are best suited to counter the opposition. I mean the whole thing about Rassie is he is incredibly analytics heavy and is trying to identify weakneses in the gameplan of the opposition. Watching the Scotland game it was pretty clear we had a slightly different gameplan on defense to be rushing into Russell's passing channel (largely PSDT) vs what we would normally do which is have PSDT smash the flyhalf (his role in the WC against England).

Slightly related but also a sidenote of how I have been conditioned as a Springboks supporter. I'm not even thinking at the moment about how interesting our attack may be or how we can attack the gainline or how our different backline players may be fast or good etc. When I'm thinking about the game I'm thinking about our defense, how we are going to try to apply pressure, what is the nuance/slight adjustment that we are going to make and how are we going to try push them back when they have the ball.

I'm currently reading ken dryden's book on the Canada Russia hockey series during the 70s and he says that Canada's biggest weakness was that they assumed since they were so great they didn't change their strategy to adjust for the Russian style of play.

I think there is a balance between confidence in your ability and over bending to your opponents.
