[RWC2023] Ireland vs Tonga (16/09/2023)

I've been worried about injuries, but to be honest players are just as likely to be injured in training. Some really big names have gone already - if anything the games haven't results in toooo much.
More likely to be injured by a Tonga team in the fight rather than one put away after 30mins also I reckon. Faz has his approach and it's completely different to previous cups, which can only be a good thing I'd suggest!

Don't hate us going strong. Think we need to respect Tonga at the very least. Type of team that will hang around if you let them.

Sort of agree - fast start (which we did 6N). Just kill the game asap and then take off the key players.

The Marx and Eben news is massive for Ireland next week - need frontline forwards fit.

Hope Sexton comes off immediately after he converts the fourth try so I can go absolutely feral when he overtakes ROG's points tally next weekend.

That record is his regardless but hope he is taken off ASAP as the Tongans are hard hitters and we don't need to pick up any injuries
I want to be there in the stadium shouting obscenities and saying horrible horrible things about Ronan O'Gara as it happens. It's how I like it, and I truly believe Johnny does too.

True just would rather Sexton doesn't get risked and miss record due to bad injury in unnecessary risk.
More over though an interesting team and more a worry on Sheehan now as he surely needed minutes here before South Africa game

On a serious note...

I think any comparisons to Leinster can stop now. It's clear there's no soft coaching in this set up. Not resting lads a week before arguably our biggest game of the year so far v resting lads in a semi-final, it might be dumb but it's tough!

Well think the rest week after SA plays in to it. And hopefully it won't be too taxing

I'm on the side of the fence that is surprised Ireland have fielded such strong lineups in the first two matches. I could understand it in one out of the two matches. Increasing the chance of a red card or an injury for a starter in easily winnable games is not a gamble I would be taking.

I would estimate Tonga are about 30 points stronger than Romania, and about 15 points behind Samoa. Plus heat is not much of a factor this weekend so Ireland can play with more intensity.

Ireland 47 - Tonga 9

Ireland haven't hit top gear since the French game in February. The line out has misfired in recent games. I can only assume that the logic behind fielding what is an almost first string team, is to iron out the wrinkles before next weekend. Clearly an injury is a price that Faz is prepared to pay if it means that they squeeze the last 5% from the team when they play SA.

I reckon we hit top gear given the circumstances v Scotland. Don't know how we could have navigated that game better than a 15 point win conceding once, essentially what SA did last week minut Doris and two hookers and in Murrayfield.
