[RWC2019][Pool A] Round 2 - Japan vs. Ireland (28/09/2019)

And lie in the way of Murray. And creep up offside. And hit rucks from all angles. Yes Japan did the lot but its not every day a ref will allow you act with such impunity.

I've never seen such a one sided performance from a referee in my life. He had one set of rules for one team and another set for the other. The offside line was irrelevant for Japan but magically came into existence when Japan had the ball.

Having said that Ireland have no chance in the World Cup. Capable of winning any game on their day but are shite at backing up week after week. Might have something to do with the way the players are managed at home because each world cup is the same. One big effort has to be followed by a three week rest or we're snookered.

I think he was too dumb to breakdown my hashtag...
Ah! Someone really needs to export twitter south of the equator... it's starting to become quite confusing for the social media literate!

So, I still think we can beat either SA or NZ in the quarter finals, if we do go through we'll likely end up losing the semi in a tame manner unless we're lucky and avoid England and Wales.

Best can be an asset but will need to be rotated in and out during the knockouts.

Playing the ref is all well and good, but there's nothing you can do when the ref is applying laws to you that he isn't to the opposition.

Japan fully deserved their win that was about as far from a balanced reffing performance as I've seen in years.

Appreciate emotions are high at the moment, but we hear the same thing from teams beaten all the time. From a neutral point of view I didn't detect any particular bias from Angus throughout the game, I thought it was just excellent breakdown and line speed from Japan.

Thats just a slogan. There's no thought behind it.

What do you do when there's competition for the ball after the ruck has formed or when there's players constantly lying in the way of the scrum half? Stand on them? Ask the Japanese to stop cheating? Good teams adapt to interpretations but this went beyond interpretation. He gave one team a brilliant platform with the whistle and gave the other a mountain to climb in possession. We didn't have that much in hand of Japan in the heat to begin with. He decided the game.

There is thought in it though. The best teams spend a significant amount of time understanding how different refs operate, and the smart players in the game realise how things are being reffed and are able to alter game plans. They covered it in a fair bit of detail in the science of sport podcast about the All Blacks, I recommend giving it a listen :)

Lads let's not turn this into a ref bashing thread. I absolutely agree Gardner let the occasion get to him but it'll just be thrown back in our faces, no one's going to side with Ireland in this debate.

Prime example as I post, this just straight up isn't a response to Corny's point.

As I say above, I would recommend watching it back once emotions have cooled to see that the ref wasn't biased :)

Terrific performance by the Japanese.

Great for the atmosphere of the rest of the world cup.

Hard luck Ireland, but tbf you are still very likely to make it through to the play offs.

Still think some of the Irish supporters here need a hell of a humbling, hope the Abs get the chance to send u home.

I have been on this forum since before 2011 World Cup and can tell you the Abs have always taken huge stick here.

Irish aren't the huge underdogs they once were, hope some of the neutrals back the kiwis against them.

Ffs the Irish haven't even won a world Cup play off match ever and they are smug as f.

I don't think anyone wants to even imagine what they would be like if they won a world Cup.

Wow! What a match. Congratulations to Japan, the host with the most.

Irish have only won two games against the All Blacks in the history of the game and like you said.... They havent won a world cup finals game ever!!!

Honestly not nearly as devastated as I thought I'd be, this doesn't have much of a genuine effect on our tournament and we're still going through barring a nightmare.

Super annoying right now but great day for the sport all things considered.

Your one did say it was just a slogan so thought I would elaborate for them. As above, I recommend watching with cooler heads later before piling in on the ref. I know I'm guilty at times of not doing that but trying to get less bogged down in "in-the-moment" this RWC
