RWC: South Africa - Wales (11-09-2011, 20:30)

Wales were unlucky, definately were the better team.

Probably more because how terribly bad this Bok team is than any major improvements though.

did anyone see butch james' little head stamp on the welsh no5? cheeky little stomp behind the ruck, wouldnt expect anything different from a sef efrikan

Phillips was ok at best, he was way too slow distributing when we should have turned up the pressure on the boks. Tavis needed to come on at 60 mins just to speed things up, they were all over the place when we had quick ball. Plus phillips looked like he didnt know what to do with the ball several times.Priestland had the best game i think i've seen him have, he seemed like a much smarter fly half than before. Would keep him at 10 and get hook at 12, roberts at 13 for Samoa. J Davies did show glimpses of what he can do but roberts did it better today.

Waited until now to post - too emotional earlier on! Hugely disappointed with the result but very encouraged with the performance. Much of what I wanted to say about individual performances has already been said so no need to repeat stuff. What I'd like to say is that it would be a big mistake to blame the referee, penalties that should or shouldn't have been given etc. Wales lost because we could not take our chances when it counted. Lack of composure in key areas, and at crucial times, means we cannot grind out victories when the pressure is truly on, against never-say-die ultra competitive opponents. This is when a winning mentality transforms itself into a winning performance. Wales' playmakers, many of them young and inexperienced, will learn from this and, hopefully, know what they've got to do during the next game and that is to be clinical under pressure. Personally, I think they've got the right attitude and character, along with a great leader in Warburton, to kick on from this.

Congratulations to all the South African supporters on here by the way.

Let all those missed opportunities spur Wales on to victory in the next game. Bring it on...

Gutting.

Barnes had a shocker with the decision not to use the TMO. Also felt he was pretty poor officiating at the scrum example penalising Paul James for going down when if you watch is Du Plessis has headed straight to the floor.

But Wales had the chance to win it at the end and failed to do so. Preistland bottled it with the drop goal. Roberts knocked the ball on close to the line. To be a top class side you need to capitalise on the mistakes the World Champions make to beat them. Sadly Wales didn't and South Africa did.

Hopefully Wales are not written off and instead have gained respect.

Congrats to South Africa ... but need to raise your game as I fully expect them to do.

What an epic game!!

1. Clearly Wales have never watched the bulls set plays in Super 14. that try of Francois Hougaard is exactly how the Bulls won last year's final vs. the Stormers. They did it a couple of times this year too. as for using the ref... every clever scrumhalf does that!! Genia is the guy who does that the most.

2. That wind made it very difficult for everyone, a lot of missed catches and silly knocks, not all forward. Think the boks missed something in the second half by trying to kick into the wind, they should have used the chips more.

3. Jean De Villiers and Victor Matfield's injuries was a major loss for the boks, after that we struggled in the line-outs and when John Smit went off, lacked a bit more composure than usual.

4. Our Young guns showed today they MUST be in the starting 15!! When Bismarck, Willem Alberts and Francois Hougaard came on, there was the spark we needed all game!

5. Welcome back Schalk!!

6. John Smit, your plane ticket back to South Africa is with Airport security, the two armed men will escort you immediately to the earliest flight to ensure you get away ASAP!!

7. Wayne Barnes, eish! he was horrible to both teams. clearly never heard of "Daylight" and when a team is tackled backwards more than once you can't give them the scrum!!

8. Wales had the heavier pack but SA's scrum was rocksolid!

9. Sorry welshies! better luck next time!

10. I get the feeling the boks are hiding something, don't ask me why, but there's this gut feeling that they're not showing everything that they trained at Rustenburg.

Don't agree, Welsh played well and Springboks badly by their ranking and standards and still won by scoring 2 tries to the Welsh 1. In fact the Welsh should not have scored that try coz the penalty which lead to the kick for touch and the try was not a penalty as no.7 (captain) came in from the side to kill the ball and Barnes the d... gives the penalty to Wales. Wales were tackled backwards on numnerous occassions and he still gives Wales the scrum. What happened to the tackler having to release the tackled player to allow placement of the ball. Barnes needs to go back to the drawing board for the most simple rules.

I also love the fact that the Wales coach said that SA don't play rugby in the build up to the match. Fitting that we beat Wales by scoring 2 tries with great backiline running!

Even you have to admit, Wales deserved the win. Clearly the better team on the day.

If Wales deserved the win, then they would have won. If you don't capitalise on 60% possession and territory, play all the rugby, but get outscored, then you don't deserve the win.

Did they deserve to win? No. SHOULD they have won? Definitely.

Wow ... simply wow ...

How about JP Du Plessis just heading straight to the ground and simply 'hinging'? What about Barnes not using the TMO. What about Barnes not blowing up holding on to the ball quicker / advantage which meant the likes of Warburton took a full brunt of physical shots taken to them? Its a catch 22 I'm afraid. Barnes was dire both ways.

I could make excuses but in reality SA were lucky to come away with the win. Wales lost it rather than South Africa winning it.

No, I'm sick of hearing this. The team with the most points on the board is the team that deserved to win. Wales had a chance and they blew it, therefore not deserving the win.

South Africa may have won, but this game does indeed feel like a loss. Maybe my expectations of SA were and are too high at the moment or I was underestimating Wales.

With 60% possession and territory to you and still get outscored, then you can only blame yourself.

Did Wales deserve to win? Maybe... but so did the Boks! their Defence were top notch!! and LIKE IN ALL PREVIOUS WORLD CUPS, DEFENCE is key to winning!!

Debatable really, because to some Wales did score more points (James Hooks penalty that was judges wide). Ultimately though, I agree with what you're saying. We shouldn't simply blame the ref, because we were sufficiently dominant in this match to win with ease, yet failed to put enough points on the board when on top in the match.

Still, this is very much a new team and a work in progress, with only Shane Williams certainly too old to make the next world cup in 2015 (though Adam Jones will be getting on a bit by then). If they continue to put in performances like that, then they will start winning games sonner rather than later. I said before the tournament started that this Welsh team is possibly a year or two away from playing to its full potential, maybe we'll be seeing them beat teams like SA on a regular basis by then? That said, I still think we can have a succesfull world cup campaign this summer. We've shown we're good enough to get out of this tough pool, although fulfilling that will still be a tough challenge, then after that, who knows? Austrailia aren't unbeatable in the quarters if we finish 2nd and they finish top of their pool.

Debatable who deserved to win most but the fact is the Bokkes pipped it.

Totally AGREE. After years of watching him muff up the premiership with his ridiculous ways I couldn't believe it when I saw him refing the tri nations Aus vs. ABs even more shocked when I saw him this morning at the RWC, the man is an absolute disaster!

Well then that's too bad, Warburton should then have asked the ref for the TMO. looks like Wales won't be so keen on having him as the ref next time they play...

Urm they did ... stop trolling

Wales can look on the bright side. You're always able to score tries and look good in attack, but it's the forwards and composure that have always been a problem.

At the moment, the Welsh scrum is good. Their lineout, usually poor, was excellent against the world's best today. If you can keep that up, the tight 5 is good.

There's 3 young players in the back row who could be a real force if they stay fit and keep improving. So as an 8, that's a bright outlook.

As for backs, you seem to have a production line of good wingers, no problem here. Scrum halves as well are normally good (can't believe Peel is in England atm..)

midfield, you have the classiest footballer in the UK in James Hook, if only you knew where to put him. Find somewhere - he's too good for 15. Priestland really impressed me at 10 today, looks composed and takes the ball nice and flat. And Roberts gives a bit of directness and power.

All in all, Wales have some very nice, young options... they should be a very competitive team for the next 4 years at least. Provided they can get over the biggest of Welsh failings, which is composure. Therein lies the Welsh side that lost to Fiji, the one that fails to win games today....
