RWC 2015: Scotland

Scotland were thorouhly unlucky in the 6 Nations, wouldn't predict Scotland WC form on these results. Despite a fair share of injuries, I trust Vern Cotter to build a cohesive and organised team solid enough to easily hold off the Samoa and reasonably challenge South Africa.
Hard to see them progress beyond the quarter finales though, have to admit. But Scotland's building for the future, I don't think that there's too much pression on them.
In some game's we might have looked better in attacked then our opponents. But its our defence is the reason why we lose. We never been that strong in defence its just we looked better in defence then we have done 5 years ago but improvements are still needed. If we are going to stand a chance against Ireland in August we need a solid defence. Sometimes our problem when we attack is we do the right thing/idea but there is one person who usually goes them self's and not pass it when they should (In the six nations Stuart Hogg and Mark Bennett were the ones who didn't really pass when it was the right decision).

So for the world cup what we need to do is work on decision making and working on our defence. It still strange that Glasgow won the pro 12 and Scotland has a good number off good players and yet struggle to win a game in the six nations.

Club and international games are very different beasts. I'd take a look at the management. I wouldn't blame Vern Cotter at this stage (despite being such a boring and uncharismatic individual) but the wider system of developing an international squad in Scotland. It's something I've said before, I think there is something wrong fundamentally in your system, not merely in the coaching.

A lot of criticism has been aimed Cotter's way over his call-up of Kiwi John Hardie to the extended training squad ahead of local talent. Would like to hear some thoughts from the members in here on the issue.

Not really seen Hardie play, But i think he's not needed in the extended squad because off people like Roddy Grant and Kelly Brown still available for selection and play in Hardie's position. But i'm still looking forward to watching Hardie in the Scotland squad and see whats he's capable off.

Scotland medical staff confirm that prop Ryan Grant did not break his ankle during the team's defeat to Ireland in Dublin.

Does this mean he is available for the coming World Cup? If so it's great.

So what's the result?

Not sure as I have not seen any updates but he has not been released form the squad.

Edinburgh's Dougie Fife, Allan Dell, Damien Hoyland, Ben Toolis and Hamish Watson along with Glasgow Warriors pair Mike Cusack and Rory Hughes have been released from the training Squad. Strauss has also left the squad but only to get some game time with Glasgow.

Was Watson the flanker who came on off the bench over the weekend?

Shame he has been cut early made a big impact I thought.

Yeah it was Watson.

Was actually surprised he's been dropped. He got a second chance which he deserved and i thought he took it really well, A shame but to be fair on Hardie he did play well i thought. Blake should had been dropped and Watson should had stayed.

Back row competition fierce John Barclay has in the past been hard done by for some reason . The Eye Tye match squad for Murrayfield this Tuesday lunch time should be interesting !

LAIDLAW TO LEAD SCOTLAND BEFORE RECORD CROWD

Scotland scrum-half Greig Laidlaw will return to the front-line before a record Summer Test crowd this Saturday against Italy at BT Murrayfield Stadium (29 August, kick-off 3.15pm) – live on BT Sport.

The Gloucester half-back is one of 15 changes to the 25-man squad to face Italy in front of what will be the largest crowd for a Summer Test match at BT Murrayfield, overtaking the 2003 record set against Ireland (35,264) overnight.

Tickets for Saturday's Test match against Italy are priced from £5 (U18s) and £15 (adults) – U12s go FREE with a paying adult. The match is the first on the great-value2015/16 Scotland season pass for all home games – prices from £100 (adults) and £60 (U18s).

The squad rotation means that almost an entirely new team could take to the field from that which overcame the Italians 16-12 in Turin, just two days before the 31-man squad for the Rugby World Cup is announced.

Laidlaw is among six new faces available to the back division, with Glasgow Warriors' quartet Mark Bennett, Stuart Hogg, Finn Russell, and Tommy Seymour, and returning Harlequins' wing Tim Visser, all vying for a starting berth.

The nine changes to the pack feature two players yet to feature this summer – lock Jonny Gray and back-row Ryan Wilson – while the remainder return from the squad selected to face Ireland in the opening Test, namely John Barclay, Fraser Brown, Blair Cowan, David Denton, Rob Harley and Jon Welsh.

Lock Grant Gilchrist has recovered from the sickness that ruled him out of the Italy Test on the morning of the match and is available for selection this weekend, while a remaining nine – Alasdair Dickinson, Ross Ford, Peter Horne, Sean Lamont, Stuart McInally, Willem Nel, Henry Pyrgos, Gordon Reid and Matt Scott – return to complete the squad.

SCOTLAND SQUAD (SPONSOR BT) TO PLAY ITALY AT BT MURRAYFIELD THIS SATURDAY (29 AUGUST, KICK-OFF 3.15PM) – LIVE ON BT SPORT.

FORWARDS: John Barclay (Scarlets), Fraser Brown (Glasgow Warriors), Blair Cowan (London Irish), David Denton, Alasdair Dickinson, Ross Ford, Grant Gilchrist (all Edinburgh Rugby), Jonny Gray, Robert Harley (both Glasgow Warriors), Stuart McInally, Willem Nel (both Edinburgh Rugby), Ryan Wilson, Gordon Reid (both Glasgow Warriors), Jon Welsh (Newcastle Falcons).

BACKS: Mark Bennett, Stuart Hogg, Peter Horne (all Glasgow Warriors), Greig Laidlaw CAPTAIN (Gloucester), Sean Lamont, Finn Russell, Henry Pyrgos, Tommy Seymour (all Glasgow Warriors), Greig Tonks (Edinburgh Rugby), Matt Scott (Edinburgh Rugby), Tim Visser (Harlequins).

Does frustrate me when we qualify players we don't even need. like some off us had a big fuss that Naiyaravoro decided to play for Australia because Glasgow bought him to hopefully play for Scotland. But we don't need him we have a good back three with Maitland, Visser and Seymour optional for the wings. Kieran Low is not even that good a player why did we even bother with him. Jim Hamilton is born in England do we need him no.

John Hardie is a good player but like Hugh Blake i don't see what we would benefit for us or for him apart for maybe a few games. Especially with Roddy Grant who has been a big part off the Edinburgh team for ages, He's not been capped but he deserves them more than Hugh Blake and John Hardie. Same with Kelly Brown its players missing and using players like them which does frustrate me.

So, you think being born in England to a Scots father isn't good enough, but being born in Botswana is (Roddy Grant)? Strange. Someone else, while we're at it, mentioned tenuous links. What's tenuous about following the rules? We don't invent Scottish grandparents, we exploit it. If you want a good example of tenuous links, try Bufge Pountney. He was born in Southampton, and had, get this, a grandmother born in the Channel Islands. As a Channel Islander, she would have had her choice of the four home nations, so it was argued that the granny rule allowed him to do the same. Not may whined about him. As for not needing Naiyarovoro, you go on about a Dutchman and a Kiwi as being good enough. We need all the bloody help we can get, because until we start winning games, we won't grow the game. We need heroes, and youngsters don't give a toss about where they come from.

i must have missed something, but i never ever found a reason for Kelly Brown's omission.

anyone?

I strongly suspect the Fat Bluffer has a hand in that.

Actually i would prefer to pick someone up who has Scottish Parents then to pick someone up with either no relation to Scotland but from living there for 3 years or have Scottish grandparents. I only said that Jim Hamilton was someone who we called up who we don't even back when he got his first cap. In fairness to him he has played better in the last 2 games but not better then Jonny Gray, Richie Gray or Grant Gilchrist. But yeah we are actually known for having a dangerous back-three Naiyaravoro would be an icing on a cake but if its that dangerous enough then we don't need him that much. But does Roddy Grant has a Botswanian name to you ?, He doesn't for me.

I'm not sure what a name has to do with it. Are you now using a name as one of the prerequisites for selection? Good thing I never got picked for Scotland. My name's Lewis. I'm sure someone with a Welsh surname would have you incensed. As for our dangerous back three, if you'd had your way, two of them wouldn't be playing for Scotland.

I'm just trying to say that you said that i would have someone from Botswana over someone from England with Scottish Parents. So then i said if Roddy Grant sounded like a Botswanian name ?. It doesn't, so his parents could be Scottish aswell. If i was the coach of Scotland i would never not select someone because off they're name.

A good team, if they play at they're best, they will do alot off damage as Italy spend another game without Parisse. Giving credit to Italy they played well last week not sure if this game will be the same. Good to see John Barclay starting at 7. Just looking back to my old posts, my prediction was nearly the actual Starting XV but from 2 players and 2 from the bench.

Am well and have been around a long time in various roles ! Team generally sound but concerned that we may fail out wide . Trust John Barclay marks his card - been somewhat ignored for too long !

Someone who was somehow ignored by Scott Johnston and Vern Cotter, I really hope he puts in a big performance because in my opinion he is better than Blair Cowan and should be our starting 7. If Scotland can play at they're very best today we could get +20 - +30. But if we play the same way as last week we will win by like +2 or +1.
