RWC 2015: Scotland

Right to bring this topic back into life I'm going to name my XV and subs for the summer tests.

1.) Ryan Grant (wouldn't be my first choice but to be fair on him has been playing well for Glasgow)
2.) Ross Ford (His experience will help Scotland, and his throwing in has been better since Scotland under Scott Johnston)
3.) Geoff Cross (Euan Murray retirement will surely mean Geoff own's Scotland's number 3 jersey)
4.) Richie Gray (him and his brother actually works and to me makes Scotland look better in defence)
5.) Jonny Gray (Really good player, very strong in defence as-well as a good leader on the pitch)
6.) Rob Harley (Also a strong player in defence)
7.) John Barclay (Please make it happen Vern, don't listen to Scott Johnston your in charge)
8.) Adam Ashe (With the number off injury's Denton is getting i think Ashe has token over, Really impressed me)
9.) Greig Laidlaw (Watched him against Connacht and he looks alot better, Passing is quicker and even sniping round ruck and makes good decisions, if he play's like that in the summer then Scotland could be really dangerous)
10.) Finn Russell (definitely better than Weir, Had a really good game against Ulster, and scored 2 brilliant tries aswell nailing a big conversion for the side-line which secured a place in the pro 12 final)
11.) Tim Visser (a better defender now, and is playing really well for Edinburgh, looking forward to seeing what he can do for Harlequins)
12.) Peter Horne (would try him again for Scotland, he is a really good play-maker though he was unlucky against Italy when he played 10, but form for Glasgow deserve's a second chance for Scotland)
13.) Richie Vernon (him moving to centre is not a bad call though he was good and with injury problems at the centre's atm, he will most likely play 13 for Scotland)
14.) Tommy Seymour (Been good for Glasgow, think Maitland misses out due to injury)
15.) Stuart Hogg (no question there is simply no better fullback in Scotland who is better than Hoggie)

16.) Fraser Brown (good player, think he is a good replacement for Ford if necessary)
17.) Gordon Reid (would play him over Grant but with Grant's form atm Reid is on the bench)
18.) WP Nel (apparently can qualify to play for Scotland now, Is a good player and wouldn't mind seeing him in a Scotland jersey)
19.) Ben Toolis (deserves a second chance, been playing well for Edinburgh)
20.) Hamish Watson (Again, deserves a second chance, will be Scotland stand out player in the future)
21.) Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (had a great season, would love to see him start one game but Laidlaw is doing a fine job at Gloucester)
22.) Duncan Weir (Seems to make his presence known when coming on, Not a bad player but not better than Russell atm)
23.) Dougie Fife (not playing badly but wouldn't start him)

Scotland has announced they're training squad for the world cup,

Backs: Mark Bennett (Glasgow Warriors), Chris Cusiter (Sale Sharks), Alex Dunbar (Glasgow Warriors), Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (Edinburgh Rugby), Stuart Hogg (Glasgow Warriors), Peter Horne (Glasgow Warriors), Damien Hoyland (Edinburgh Rugby), Rory Hughes (Glasgow Warriors), Ruaridh Jackson (Wasps), Greig Laidlaw (Gloucester), Sean Lamont (Glasgow Warriors), Sean Maitland (London Irish), Henry Pyrgos (Glasgow Warriors), Finn Russell (Glasgow Warriors), Matt Scott (Edinburgh Rugby), Tommy Seymour (Glasgow Warriors), Duncan Taylor (Saracens), Greig Tonks (Edinburgh Rugby), Richie Vernon (Glasgow Warriors), Tim Visser (Harlequins), Duncan Weir (Glasgow Warriors).

Forwards: Adam Ashe (Glasgow Warriors), John Barclay (Scarlets), Hugh Blake (Glasgow Warriors), Fraser Brown (Glasgow Warriors), Blair Cowan (London Irish), Mike Cusack (Glasgow Warriors), Allan Dell (Edinburgh Rugby), David Denton (Edinburgh Rugby), Alasdair Dickinson (Edinburgh Rugby), Ross Ford (Edinburgh Rugby), Grant Gilchrist (Edinburgh Rugby), Ryan Grant (Glasgow Warriors), Jonny Gray (Glasgow Warriors), Richie Gray (Castres), Jim Hamilton (Saracens), Robert Harley (Glasgow Warriors), Stuart McInally (Edinburgh Rugby), Willem Nel (Edinburgh Rugby), Gordon Reid (Glasgow Warriors), Josh Strauss (Glasgow Warriors), Alasdair Strokosch (Perpignan), Tim Swinson (Glasgow Warriors), Jon Welsh (Newcastle Falcons), Hamish Watson (Edinburgh Rugby), Ryan Wilson (Glasgow Warriors).

First off all i'm happy that John Barclay is back, Damien Hoyland is good don't get me wrong but he played once for Edinburgh, is he really ready to play for Scotland ?. But Happy to see Josh Strauss, WP Nel and Mick Cusack in there, have been great this year. But still no Roddy Grant and still Jim Hamilton somehow finding his way into the squad. Not surprised to see Kelly Brown not there as he has not really been playing for Sarries atm.

Good to see Barclay back in the squad as he's been missed as far as I'm concerned. Sorry to see Johnnie Beattie omitted from the squad as i thought he acquitted himself quite well in the 6 nations. I'm not yet convinved Hoyland is deserving to be in the initial squad though I hope to be proven wrong. And again no chance for Roddy Grant. You've got to feel for the man.

i must have missed something, but i never ever found a reason for Kelly Brown's omission.

anyone?

tbh he isn't really played that much for Sarries this year which is why he missed out this year. But for the six nations and autumn tests, i dont know why he missed out

I hope our weird obsession with picking Denton is over.

Back row of:

6. Blair Cowan
7. John Barclay
8. Ryan Wilson

is our best bet in my opinion.

Nice to see Watson in the 46 he has been one of the few in form impressive Edinburgh players (well judging by the games I have seen him play in)

What is wrong with Denton ?, he is a good strong ball carrier and was our best player in the 2014 six nations. Ryan Wilson is good but i'll have Adam Ashe over him, Ashe has been impressive in the number 8 jersey for Glasgow this year.

Yeah he's been good for Edinburgh was really impressed with him, Didn't quite done that well for Scotland in the six nations but definitely deserves a second chance.

Dougie Fife and Ben Toolis have been added to Scotland's extended World Cup training squad replacing Glasgow Warriors lock Tim Swinson and Saracens centre Duncan Taylor.

I've thought he was good previously, but currently just see him as a battering ram and not the most effective one. Would love a more balanced back row. Ashe is a gamble for me but I agree he could start ahead of Wilson.

John Hardie (Highlanders) has been added to the Extended Squad. Don't know who he's replacing.

I'm annoyed that he's here. Not saying he's bad or anything but we have Kelly Brown and Roddy Grant who have still not been picked for the squad and yet he gets when he only qualifies for Scotland through his Scottish grandparents. Still looking forward to see what he's like for Scotland but we really didn't need him when we have Kelly Brown and Roddy Grant available.

It has got to be frustrating be a Scottish supporter. Surely they have to work out that until the institutional failures are corrected, it doesn't matter how many players with tenuous Scottish connections are poached. John Hardie is a decent player, but he isn't going to be the difference between winning and losing a RWC game - and it just blocks the development of local players.

I think the supporters figured that out years ago, they seem far more clued up then the guys in charge - I understand development is a long term project with a financial impact but essentially Scotland are Wales in 2000 bringing in anyone with even a tenacious claim to being scottish.

Does frustrate me when we qualify players we don't even need. like some off us had a big fuss that Naiyaravoro decided to play for Australia because Glasgow bought him to hopefully play for Scotland. But we don't need him we have a good back three with Maitland, Visser and Seymour optional for the wings. Kieran Low is not even that good a player why did we even bother with him. Jim Hamilton is born in England do we need him no.

John Hardie is a good player but like Hugh Blake i don't see what we would benefit for us or for him apart for maybe a few games. Especially with Roddy Grant who has been a big part off the Edinburgh team for ages, He's not been capped but he deserves them more than Hugh Blake and John Hardie. Same with Kelly Brown its players missing and using players like them which does frustrate me.

Scotland were thorouhly unlucky in the 6 Nations, wouldn't predict Scotland WC form on these results. Despite a fair share of injuries, I trust Vern Cotter to build a cohesive and organised team solid enough to easily hold off the Samoa and reasonably challenge South Africa.
Hard to see them progress beyond the quarter finales though, have to admit. But Scotland's building for the future, I don't think that there's too much pression on them.

Just on the rearranging the srustructures:

I've worked in the north east of Scotland as a rugby coach and we've seen a difference last year. A number of job changes and new personnel. I left coaching shortly after that. They seem, from what I've been told, to have invested in local clubs and less in the rugby private schools. We'll see if it works in a few years.
