Rome or Milan to host 2015 Heineken Cup Final

Would be super and the correct call. I love Cardiff but it staged there too much. And in my opinion Murrayfield awful venue for it, Stade France is ok, Twickenham grand for odd occasion and Aviva is a disgrace of a pitch and capacity way too small for final

I liked Murrayfield it's a nice venue and the Scots are gas, same with Twickenham and unfortunately I've never been to the millennium but it looks class.

I was in Stade de France for the world cup and it was brilliant, I hope with the excitement of HEC final day the Aviva will do it justice but we did need a change of venue and Italy is where it should be, there'd be no point having a HEC final in a country which isn't represented in the competition.

Do the Roma or Milano stadiums have 120m-length pitches?

Olimpico (Rome) has hosted a total of 5 Six Nations test matches and San Siro has hosted Italy - New Zealand. I'm pretty sure both stadiums are up to the task.

According to wikipedia, the pitch size of both Stadio Olimpico and San Siro is 105m*68m.
So it is possible to play Rugby Union on the pitch whose size is same as Football?

The Madjeski stadium is used by both London Irish and Reading Football Club, quite a few other Rugby teams have shared stadiums with Football Clubs. As long as there is enough grass laid out then a stadium can be used by football and rugby clubs as you just re-paint the lines on the pitch.

Where the stadium was built for football and is now used also by Rugby I think you tend to see the try areas are smaller than those used in stadiums used for international games.

Ireland played Italy in Stadio Olimpico and Italy played in San Siro in November so both are tested and perfect. Don't forget Ireland Wales and France all play in same place as National soccer teams.
Pitch dimensions are that given for soccer playing area and not for actual size of ALL grass area

Is this a precursor to another moronic idea that rugby pitches should be 2.1 acres and hexagonal shaped?

The Rugby field should be 105m*68m.
105m is 93m field of play and 6m*2 ingoals.

Ingoals vary a fair bit, especially in clubs in the UK that share with Football teams - London Irish at the Madjeski Stadium (shared with Reading FC) have tiny ingoals, as did the Cardiff Blues when they played at the City Stadium (shared with Cardiff City FC).

As others have pointed out, both the San Siro and the Stadio Olympico have hosted top class rugby and had no problems or complaints, more than good enough to host the Heineken Cup Final in my opinion!

Could you tell me the field size of the stadiums you mentioned?
According to the Rugby Union laws, the length of ingoals must be longer than 97m.

And West Ham United are moving to the Olympic Stadium. Is it possible to buy Upton Park for London Irish, London Scottish or London Welsh?

I believe West Ham will be selling Upton Park for it to be developed into a housing area, they will earn more money from that than by selling it to a Rugby club. Also historically I believe the Exile clubs are from the Sunbury area of west London, that's where London Irish at least have their training ground they are not from East London and would probably struggle to maintain Upton Park on their on.

Also the ingoals area is the try scoring area not the main body of the pitch and so do not need to be more than 97m long, I believe the maximum is 22m, not sure what he minimum is, would assume 2-3m perhaps?

97m? You sure? That's almost the length of the actual pitch, try line to try line?

San Siro is - 105m x 68m
Stadio Olimpico - 105m × 68m. We all know this is fine for rugby considering it's now a 6 Nations venue! In goals are rather large too from what i remember, though it's also an athletics stadium, so might get extended? Because if we compare them to the Millennium Stadium (purpose built Rugby stadium) - 120 m × 79 m, they are a fair bit smaller.

Either way, as I said, both have hosted top class rugby in the past so they;re fine for it. As Taranus said, 2-3m in goals are fine, last time I watched a match at London Irish it was anyway!

Was at the London Irish game today and the ingoals area is the same depth as the football 18 yard box.

The Italian Rugby Union announced yesterday that they will stage this final in Milan (San Siro) and not in Rome (Olympic Stadium). This stadium can hold 80.000 people and was a sell-out for Italy's 2009 November Test against New Zealand.

In other news, France has pulled out of organizing the 2014 final due the uncertainty over the availability of the Stade de France. I believe England (Twickenham) and Wales (Millennium) have put in bids to host the 2014 final now.

France have finished their contract with the Stade de France and probably will not renew it, but that is not certain, they are starting their own FFR owned stadium south of Paris, so France will probably not hold any finals for the next couple of years while the new stadium is being constructed. Its as usual all about money!!!!!

So where will they host their Six Nations matches?
