Romanian Rugby

Oaks winger Ionut Botezatu has saved the life of a man involved in a fist fight on the street. The man was was choking his tongue, Botezatu knew what to do after seeing doctors performing the maneuver in rugby games.

The mayor of Iasi has confirmed that Poli Iasi will play in the Superliga next season and promised a decent budget for the club. A dedicated rugby stadium will be built in the city, with 5000-8000 seats, the city hall hopes that construction works will start next year.

In other news, Veaceslav Titica has won the Moldovan "Player of the Year" award, a pretty surprising winner in my opinion.

This is awesome news, Iasi have the potential to become one of the main rugby areas in Romania;

very happy news for Iasi. how about the others i no navodari is in. but i wonder who the last one team will be? and also congrats to florin the scrum half who gone to calvisano he talented player so he deserve his break. is there any news on Romania and georgia coming upto six nations or is there relagation? i havent heard anything here but did hear there is meeting there is about the situation which i think personally be good for six nations and 2 tier nations as show in world cup.

There is no clear information from the other clubs. Navodari seems to be in, while Petrosani was still looking for funding. In a recent interview, the mayor of Galati mentions that the rugby club might play in the first division next year if they can sort out their budget, this is the first time a local source announces a possible promotion.

Another bit of info comes from a TV interview with the manager of U Cluj, who also mentions RC Barlad as one of the clubs considering promotion. He also said that almost certainly the Superliga will have at least 8 clubs next season. However, he pointed out that the two cups (Romanian Cup and King's Cup) will be played before the next edition of the Superliga and clubs from the top two divisions will play in them. He warned that heavy defeats of the second division clubs against the Superliga ones in these cups might make some of them abandon promotion. Two years ago there were some 100+ trashings in similar matches in the Romanian Cup.

In other news, Eugen Apjok was confirmed as Baia Mare head coach for the next season (some rumours claimed there could be a change there). Former Lyon prop Bogdan Balan will become head coach at U Cluj.

will this include super liga doing what we do in england with a long season. august to end of april./? sounds exciting it does.

i seen that also csm head coach has left but still going to illegal actions which is fair. also heard others left to. this is all on his facebook.

I am tired of this story with Danie de Villiers. He's not the only one not paid by the club and while I don't want this to sound as an excuse the club started to pay its debts. There are others also bot paid that decided to take legal action without all that circus on facebook.

i fully agree just he puts it on there for showing anyway good luck to who is involved and the players to.

According to the manager of Poli Iasi, there is a high chance that two of Romania's home matches this spring (against Russia and Germany) will be played in the city. This is a great move if true, the last time the Oaks played there (against Spain in 2002) the stadium was full and the final of the Romanian Cup hosted in Iasi last season had an attendance of over 5000. The Emil Alexandrescu football stadium has a capacity of 11500 seats. The first home match (vs Portugal) will be played in Cluj.

Poli Iasi manager Dan Codreanu said that the club will go fully pro for the Superliga and aims for a squad of 32 players. They will make 17 transfers and 5 of the new players have Superliga experience. The club's budget allows for wages between 1500 and 3500 RON per month for the players (between 350-800 EUR).

In other news, Mihai Lazar has signed a 2-year contract extension with Castres.

its good for iasi. i bet a lot of csm squad will go to iasi as well. leaves csm with big whole. also heard navodari got english player on trial for next week not sure true or not. but if so that be good to see english player coming in not many are in super liga so that be intresting.

Good news from Iasi and I like how they build up, they are not going to spend a lot in the beginning with huge salaries.

Also I think they look very much in the future with new stadium to be built and I suspect their Super Liga squad will be quite young.

I think is important for Romanian rugby to have a strong club in Iasi, it's capital of Moldova with very good universities and a vivid cultural life; probably is not as rich as Timisoara, Cluj or Constanta but not far off. With wise management it can become a powerhouse of Romanian rugby in the future, there is a lot of potential there.

Never heard a thing about Navodari except intentions to participate in Super Liga...I don't think they'll have money for foreigners but who know..

would iasi take lot of csm players? for expercience would you think. as for navodari just heard rumor be nice to see english player playing in super liga i have said this before lot of kiwi tongans south africans but not lot of english players or french. which suprises me a little.

I don't know, as it looks they'll just sign some experienced players and rely on local young talents. So I doubt many CSM players will sign with Iasi. Hopefully CSM will continue somehow, even with a weakened team.

I don't find surprising that English and French players did not joined Super Liga clubs. There are plenty of opportunities in UK or France I assume, which is not the case for Islanders or even Aussies/Kiwis who have a bigger player base but not so many clubs, certainly not enough pro clubs to accomodate all the players that they produce trough their academies. England have like 8-9 leagues as far as I know so not a problem to find a place to play there...

The Iasi area has always been a big talent pool of Romanian rugby so it will be great if they manage to mantain a team in the Superliga. I also like their strategy - they started by naming a good manager with proven results in other sports (Dan Codreanu, who managed to build the succesfull local event in the Rally Championships from scratch), they were patient and did not sack the head coach after some poor results. Despite promises of a new stadium, the club was wise to start some renovation works at their old one to meet Superliga minimal standards. Modest salaries are also good for a small club.

Regarding players, they mention some from Steaua, Dinamo and former Farul Constanta players returning from France. From CSM they already got player-coach Cosmin Ratiu.

I don't think a player from France or England would come to a club like Iasi or Navodari and accept a wage of 500-800 EUR per month. Even if the club provides free accomodation and meals, it's still too low for them. However, there are a lot of talented Tongans and Fijians who are happy with such wages, that's why there are so many of them in the Superliga. With good scouting, you can even find world-class players from the Pacific Islands who are willing to accept Superliga contracts (like former Timisoara prop Manasa Saulo now at Toulon or former Farul winger William Helu, currently at Edinburgh).

Only the richer clubs like Timisoara or Baia Mare can afford to sign Kiwis, South Africans or Western European players. The smaller clubs can only get them by other methods. For examplu U Cluj has a pretty good French centre (Belguidon), who has played in Pro D2 and for the junior national teams of France, they only managed to sign him because the player studies medicine at the University of Cluj and wanted to continue to play rugby.

BTW, Belguidom played for Algeria against Tunisia last month, and scored the only try of the game

Good news for Iasi.

I'm curious to know who are these players who are returning from France. There are not so many romanians in France

I bet Algeria could form one of the strongest teams in Africa using French players of Algerian descent (especially if the descendants of the former French colonists are eligible as well).

I have no idea who are those ex-Farul players in France but maybe there are some who quit rugby when Farul disbanded and went to work in France (or kept playing there at amateur level). I tried to find some of the old Farul players and found a few in obscure places, for example fullback Albert Stiopei plays for Lummezane in the second division in Italy.

i understand fully. in england you got loads of teams and leagues and france be same. and also leagues start august to may so its all long seasons for all teams even lower leagues. as for super liga i watched it last season it is intresting more teams would make way more intresting. i hope the lower division will come even if they do get hiding it be good for them and romania rugby to. i hope csm be ok. i no there head coach is not there now so be taken over my new coaching team and give romanians who played well in second division. i wonder where coach will go as well csm.

I know Cristian Munteanu (ex- Farul, ex-Wolves Captain) is playing somewhere in France, maybe he's on the radar too, I'd love to see him back in Super Liga. If I remember corectly, he had some issues with a nasty injury and was released by his French club but since than I lost his track.
