This is a two-part question:
1) Will the scrum mechanism be updated in 2012?
2) Will the Player Attributes and Special Abilities have a more direct affect on the gameplay?
Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan of 2008 and we spent many a morning at uni with hangovers from late night sessions where EA Rugby 2008 was heavily involved, but the one thing we always griped about was the fact that the scrummages were such foregone conclusions: the player who won the ball at the strike (and when was the last time a rugby ball touched a hooker's heel in the real world, lol) went forward a couple of metres and that was that. Yes, the opposition could wheel the scrum but that was as far as "competition" for the ball went. No counter-shoving, no engagement mechanic, no benefit from using a team with a superior scrummaging stat, no pushover tries, no satisfaction from shunting Wasps back 40 yards with anyone down to and including Portugal and, to be honest, no fun either.
This brings me on to the second part of my question as this pre-ordained method of restarting from knock-ons and forward passes means that there's little to no point in having decent props and on your team. It's just as effective to stick a couple of extra flankers in your frontrow as it makes absolutely zero difference to the scrum. There's no discernible in-match scrum time difference between, for example, Perry Freshwater (prop/hooker, SpAb: scrummaging, strength 96, scrummaging 89, aggression 82) and G. Sharveli (prop, no SpAb, strength 71, scrummaging 71, aggression 81); nor indeed Frank Murphy (scrumhalf, no SpAb strength 62, scrummaging 13, aggression 60).
Lastly, I've always wondered how many different skills the lineout attribute covers in 2008. Does it just alter the effectiveness of the jumper and the throwing ability of the hooker, or does it make props better/worse lifters? If there are to be "special abilities" in 2012 will they actually directly affect the match or will they pretty much just be there as a tick in a box on a stats page as they were in 2008?
Ok, I lied as I have one more question. Will we be able to throw up flankers in the lineout this time round or is it going to be limited to the locks at 2 and 4 and the No.8 at the rear once more? The ability to be more tactical at the lineout would be super ;-)
Thanks for all of your hard work at HB Studios and I'm sure we'll burn the midnight beers with Rugby 2012 at future uni reunions!
