[November Tests 2017 EOYT] Ireland vs. Fiji (18/11/2017)

Carbery should be getting some gametime at 10 for Leinster. I mean its hard to control a game of international rugby at 10 if he has not played there since 2016. All he is lacking is experience and a higher goal kicking percentage but he is extremely talented showed that yesterday in the first half especially.

I thought McCloskey and Sweetnam were good yesterday and they demonstrate what they can do. Conway deserved motm. Each of those players made one or two mistakes but that was expected when you have a bunch of newish caps and new combinations etc. In hindsight Andrew Trimble would have been a better option than D Kearney. People might say Trimble isn't the future but neither is D Kearney and he was starting because he is reliable and knows the plays etc. Schmidt isn't a fan of TOH it seems.

The pack were poor overall especially with the breakdown. It would have been a different story if some of Niall Scannell, John Ryan, James Ryan, Leavy and VDF were fit but they were not.

So it was a poor team performance but some individuals shone. Fiji are better than generally viewed and they're an unusual team in the sense that their backs are nearly as big as forwards and they can score from anywhere.

Good: Conway, McCluskey, Sweetnam, Ruddock,
Average: Toner, McGrath, Porter, Herring, Murphy, Carbery, Farrell, Conan
Poor: Marmion, Dillane, D Kearney,

Furlong and especially made a big impact when they came on. Its fair to say Healy is back to his best. Treadwell played well too and could leapfrog Dillane. The other subs were solid and helped close out the game.

How was Carbery's game management bad yesterday? He led us to a lead, wasn't at fault at all for either try and continued to play positively in the right areas of the pitch. (I'd also argue Mads has good game management in a good system but that's neither here nor there) Fiji got back into the game through bad back three play and they stayed in it because the pack didn't want to hit rucks, JC didn't turn the ball over running, usually made ground and would have had us out of sight in the first half but for a stupid Sweetnam penalty after his sublime step and offload. Had he the chance to play the entire match and we'd won, which we would have, he'd have been MOTM.

It's more though he lead us brilliantly by running and flowing. But in a tight game that would've required management and field positioning he would have struggled as he hasn't had the time there. I think that isn't a criticism but just more it goes hand on hand with everything. It hard to play international rugby at 10 as it is never mind if you are only playing there once in a blue moon. Simply because 10 is such a specialist position you need to keep your match sharpness in that position up. Nobody is saying he was at fault for anything but have seen it from eveywhere on the difference when Murray/Sexton are missing that the whole postion system is World apart

Put yourself in Leinster's position. Rob Kearney and Johnny Sexton are injured. You have two people, Ross Byrne and Joey Carbery, who can fill in at 10. You have one person, Joey Carbery who can fill in at 15. What selection call do you make?

At Joey Carbery's age, Johnny Sexton had a grand total of 2 starts and 2 sub appearances for Leinster. I think it's much better that he's getting game time than sitting on the bench. Leinster are in a brilliant position of having 2 quality young flyhalves learned from one of Ireland's greatest ever flyhalves.

There's a lot of crap being spouted on Leinsterfans that Carbery is a quality 15 and not a very good 10. These people must have forgotten his early season form last year when he was a revelation. With Rob Kearney back to full fitness and James Lowe coming into the back three freeing up Isa Nacewa to also play 15, hopefully Carbery gets a shot to play at 10 more often.

How about sending him up here post-January for the rest of the season on a loan?

We're almost certain to loose CL back to the Brumbies, Jackson ain't coming back and Pete Nelson is a makeshift 10.

Would the D4heads be willing to let him go for 4/5 months so he can get gametime as a first choice 10? (we also have a kicking scrum half so he wouldn't have to shoulder all the pressure at once)

That is the age old argument. Leinster did what was best for Leinster and were correct.
As you say it was a scenario case for Leinster but we are all in agreement he needs more time at 10. Although he's out now with wrist broken
