The headline says he has, the Sydney Morning Herald article says it looks like he has ... they should have a great back line if they have him and Beale, plus whoever they retain from this year

James O'Connor joins Melbourne Rebels

James O'Connor is believed to have a signed a deal to join the Melbourne Rebels in 2012.

The Western Force and Wallabies star would be the second high-profile recruit to join the new franchise this week following the news of Kurtley Beale's signing on Wednesday.

O'Connor and Beale are known to be good friends and would have been lured by the prospect of playing together at provincial level.

The 20-year-old made his Super Rugby debut for the Force in 2008 when he was 17 - against the Reds in his home town of Brisbane - and played for the Wallabies for the first time later that year against Italy in Padova.

He has since played 27 times for Australia and represented the Force 32 times at Super Rugby level.

O'Connor is tipped to star for the Wallabies at the upcoming World Cup in New Zealand starting in September.

Western Force star James O'Connor believed to have signed contract with Melbourne Rebels
By Paul Johnson FOX SPORTS April 15, 2011 4:00PM

Melbourne Rebels are continuing their recent shooping spree and may have snared one of the biggest names in Australian rugby.

Wallabies winger James O'Connor is set to become the latest player to join Melbourne Rebels according to Inside Rugby editor Mark Cashman.

Cashman says the Rebels have struck a deal with the 20-year-old outside back to join the club and Kurtley Beale ans is backed by Fairfax media reports suggesting the deal is done, conflicting directly with information coming from his current club Western Force that they are expecting to keep the Wallabies star.

"I'm told that James O'Connor will commit to the Rebels as soon as Monday of next week," Cashman said.

If O'Connor was to leave the Force it would be disastrous for the club as they have invested significant time and money on O'Connor since they brought him there as a teenager and have built their future plans around the Wallabies star.

Fox Sports rugby analyst Brendan Cannon failed to confirm or deny knowledge on whether a deal was done on O'Connor's future but did admit with O'Connor's 'mate' Beale heading to Melbourne it could be likely and would set the Force back on their heels.

"Kurtley Beale signing with the Rebels took the Waratahs and Australian rugby by surprise – O'Connor and Beale are pretty tight mates," Cannon said.

"Until its confirmed James O'Connor is still with Western Force but what it does (if the rumour is true), is make Western Force's task in future years of recruiting players really tough.

"He is a superstar and if they were to lose him it would be an enormous blow."

Cannon believes Melbourne's ability to sign stars like Beale and O'Connor is related directly to the success they have had in their first year and the way the club is being run.

"The setup is obviously very impressive, but I think what has accelerated the signing of Kurtley Beale and possibly James O'Connor is how the Rebels have gone this year," Cannon said.

"Their season to date has been exceptional compared to how Western Force were in their inaugural year. From a rugby player's perspective, you think - they have surprised us and surprised everyone.

"I hope for Western Force's sake it is not true. They have banked future years and future playing spots on James O'Connor and have helped develop him into the player he is today. If he was to leave Western Force it would make their future recruitment and retention of players very hard."

Love it!
Really wanted to dislike the rebels because of Danny "Wait, I thought I was a footballer" Cipriani, but I've even started to like him a bit :p

Beale and JOC are two of my favourite Aussie players - they just need to sign Mitchell and Pocock and I'm set

Sick, need to look to improve their pack a little mind. Then again Adam Freier has not featured for them since signing.

Hey guys - appreciate all the support and interest. Focussed on game this weekend - all else will be sorted in due course. Cheers tweeps.

a backline with, cips, o'connor, beale, kingi and mortlock, cooper vuna not too bad i guess :/

Well, the Sydney Morning Herald is maintaining that he's signed ... it seems that there's a rush to sign players before the salary caps come in next year. Apparently, players on existing contract aren't counted in the salary cap until their contract expires and has to by renewed.

O'Connor move leaves Force stunned - and with a war chest
Jamie Pandaram
April 16, 2011

JAMES O'CONNOR'S defection to the Melbourne Rebels will leave the Western Force reeling, but the Perth side shapes as the big threat to rival teams when the new salary cap is imposed from next year.

The Australian Rugby Union is introducing a cap of $4.4 million for next season, which will be cut back to $4.1 million the following year in a bid to cut costs. While the Force will be hard-hit by the loss of their star player next season, they will have more money to spend than any other team on new recruits, and will be chasing the biggest names in the game.

As seen in the NRL, a salary cap equalises the talent across the competition, and the star-studded NSW and Queensland sides will have to lose some players if they are to remain under the stipulated expenditure for their 30-man squads. The Rebels' coup in signing dynamic duo O'Connor and Kurtley Beale on deals worth up to $1 million a year each also means they will be restricted in chasing other notable players, and will have to rely on young and inexperienced squad members to develop under the pair.

O'Connor will announce on Monday that he has joined the Rebels. He had hoped to keep news of the defection a secret until after the Force's match against the Brumbies tomorrow, to the extent that he has yet to return a signed contract extension to the ARU, but the Herald has learnt that the Rebels deal is done.

The marketing appeal of the two Wallabies stars will significantly boost the profile of the Rebels in AFL-mad Melbourne. The club began the year with a bold vision of attracting international quality stars with their brand of rugby, and while that has played a part, the undeniable lure for O'Connor and Beale is the enormous money.

The Rebels' strong ties with Melbourne's business community have enabled them to snare the two hottest young talents in Australian rugby. While five-eighth Danny Cipriani insists he will see out the remaining year of his contract next season, it's understood he has approached several European clubs seeking a return to the northern hemisphere following this year's World Cup.

Should the Rebels lose Cipriani, they have a ready-made five-eighth in O'Connor - who spent his junior years in the No.10 jersey - and he would form a lethal combination with fullback Beale. If Cipriani stays, O'Connor would play at inside-centre and skipper Stirling Mortlock would shift to No.13.

O'Connor and Beale are close friends, and will have been swayed by the prospect of playing together at provincial level.

Melbourne have already exceeded expectation this year but will be a far more formidable proposition next year. The Rebels were given special dispensation for overseas recruits - 10 foreign players compared with just two for the rest of the Australian sides - but that will be reduced each year until they are also allowed just two from 2016 onwards. The foreign player allowance was granted so the Rebels would not raid the ranks of the other sides, but that has not prevented them in the astute purchase of two of Australia's best backs.

The Force have struggled to entice players to move to Perth, particularly after the rogue company Firepower defaulted paying millions of dollars in sponsorship money, resulting in several key departures from the team. But when the top players are coming off contract next year, the Force will be handing out the biggest cheques. The thought of moving to the other side of the country will not seem as difficult when pay rises are being offered in an environment of salary restrictions.

The salary cap will apply to all deals done from next year and beyond. The highest-paid players such as O'Connor and Beale will struggle to get similar deals from the Rebels when they are off-contract again. O'Connor, 20, made his Super Rugby debut for the Force in 2008 when he was 17 - against the Reds in his home town of Brisbane - and played for the Wallabies for the first time later that year against Italy in Padova.

He has since played 27 times for Australia and represented the Force 32 times at Super Rugby level.

O'Connor will be a key figure for the Wallabies at the World Cup in New Zealand starting in September.

Does look good. O'Connors injection of youth maybe what they need. Kingi provides that also with a Maori touch but only glimpses.

Beale??...I think they need not look any further than Mark Gerrard.

All the stories are complete crap that have just come from some journo's baseless claims.

He may or may not sign with the Rebels, but the media doesn't have a clue.

I don't really think he will go to the Rebels, he's most likely to go to the Reds or to the Brumbies, I hope he goes to the Brumbies, I don't really want him at the Reds :\

If he does move, i'd bet the Reds. (Playing inside the Wallaby 9/10, spending quality time with Quade and bro's).

He obviously wont spend his whole career at the Force, but currently (besides results) things seem to be going pretty well for him in terms of improvement/health/social life. At this rate it seems another 2 years at the Force might suit him well, especially considering the new facilities being opened soon.

Anyway, i'm sure the choice he makes will be a wise one. He is just about the only decent Wallaby back to not bother with the "NRL negotiations" nonsense, which indicates he is not mucking around in making the best decision possible.

1. He would upset the dynamic of the Reds, and force younger prospects like Ben Tapuai out of the picture. The only way I'd welcom him to the reds is If Hynes retires this year as predicted
2. I dislike James O'Connor extremely as a person.

Younger players? It hardly even looks as though O' Connor has begun shaving yet!

Fairs do, but I certainly wouldn't mind him at the Sharks, he is from Durban after all, maybe that's why you don't like him as a person :p
