I've gotta say, for all the talk about politics, quotas don't make a man forget how to pass and catch.

We bemoan, time and time again, the way NH teams lag behind SH teams because they have the mental and technical ability to get the ball into space. Based on that, South Africa is the most NH side in the world. All of the cool-headed players who made South Africa great in the last generation are gone and there's no one there to replace them. There's no one in their prime replacing the old farts really. Coetzee really has his work cut out to get some brains and hands back into them.

Been a very good week for closing the hemisphere gap.
But a bad week for closing the NZ-everyone else gap. :p

Yay!!! 2-1 to the NH

Yeah, we would like to disown South Africa now and we're adopting Argentina :D

PS, has Crombrink shagged everyone in SARU's mother or something? The man couldn't get picked if he was Jonah Lomu reincarnate.

If I were him I'd high tail it to Europe and never look back, criminally under picked.

I wouldn't say that's true, although Wales lost, they definitely proved that NZ are beatable and have their weaknesses. After today, I feel much better about the Lions tour.

I'm sure normal service will resume next week, although SA don't look good.

Not really, what they proved was we have lost 1000 test caps and still have loads of depth for guys to step into those shoes and easily beat a well oiled veteran Welsh side.

We all knew it would be close up until the 60th minute mark then the AB's run away with it. No gap was closed at all today with NZ.

The rust will be off and combinations will be firing in the upcoming tests. Wales missed their chance.

I agree, Wales got beaten by a relatively inexperienced NZ side. If I was Welsh, I would be disappointed it wasn't closer.

Up until the 60 minute mark it was anyone's game. If a team that knew how to play more than 60 mins had played them, it would've been a very interesting game.

Again though... unless you are saying any use of the foot in a ruck and any chargedown is reckless, and therefore illegal, then you are judging whether it's reckless or not by the outcome - which is illogical.

But how it's already reffed that way with the spear tackle. And the high ball. Well, sometimes with the high ball. Reckless contact with the eyes.

The idea that if something dangerous happens accidentally, you're screwed, already exists in rugby.

And not all chargedowns are reckless, but every one of them that ends up smashing someone in the head probably is. Ditto feet in the ruck.

Says everyone after playing the All Blacks post 2010.

But really, how often do you find sides going toe to toe with the AB's until the 2nd half of the 2nd half, virtually every top 5-6 nation in the world experiences this vs the All Blacks who use their bench masterfully and put teams to the sword.

It's not luck mate, it's a well executed game plan that never fails because of the quality of the bench and our fitness and toughness that's burned into us from a young age.

They back tracked from the high ball because they realised it was stupid to penalise people based on the undesireable outcome of an otherwise legitimate and legal action.

They don't allow ant form of tip or spear tackle because they deem the risk of dangerous outcome far too high - if they deem that to be the case with feet in the ruck and chargedowns, then fine.

How do you define what was reckless about that particular challenge though? That he jumped?

You're still wanting to judge the action purely based on the result IMO.
The context for a chargedown or a boot in the ruck can only vary so much - in both circumstances you are likely to be kicking out near someone's head or running and jumping directly at someone.
By your definition they are inherently reckless and should be illegal.

Yes, I do want to judge on the result. If you hit the head, you've strayed from legal to illegal. I've been completely open about that.

edit: That, at least, is how I'd run it.

That is, at times, how World Rugby runs it. They are not consistent enough though.

Fine.

I think that's moronic though, particularly if your intention is to reduce the actual incidences of hits to the head.

Peat, your way risks people deliberately using their heads to shield the ball, especially in the ruck. More people could end up getting hurt that way.

Nope, it would have a negligible effect IMO.

You would reduce hits to the head by saying any boots in the ruck or chargedowns are illegal.
