Ireland v New Zealand

Lynam - team announced Thursday because NZ don't name team until thursday.
And SOB is a fine player but as stated already he isn't developed at 7 yet to be international class and when McLaughlin is back it'll be interesting to see who looses out

Ugh, naming teams until Thursday is a lame and paranoid policy by Hansen. Hope it doesn't become the norm, as the extra day is hardly likely to give much extra time for a team to change a game plan, and frankly there is unlikely to be any big suprises anyway. For the All Blacks, I can see this team - (first name most likely)

1. Tony Woodcock
2. Andrew Hore/Hika Elliot
3. Owen Franks
4. Brad Thorn (50th Cap)
5. Sam Whitelock/Tom Donnelly
6. Jerome Kaino
7. Richie McCaw
8. Kieren Read
9. Jmmy Cowan/Alby Mathewson
10. Daniel Carter
11. Hosea Gear
12. Ma'a Nonu/Sonny Bill Williams
13. Conrad Smith
14. Cory Jane/Isia Toeava
15. Mils Muliaina

16. Hika Elliot/Andrew Hore
17. John Afoa
18. Tom Donnelly/Anthony Boric
19. Liam Messam
20. Alby Mathewson/Andy Ellis
21. Stephen Donald
22. Isia Toeava/Cory Jane

For the front row, the All Blacks will want to keep their front row pretty much the same. Afoa will likely provide conver from the bench as he can pack both sides of the scum and play hooker if all goes very wrong, with the only possible mix up I'd imagine is if Elliot starts over Hore. Elliot had a good test debut, but I'd imagine Hore will get the start now seeing he's pretty much the incumbant.

For the locks, I can't see Thorn being left out so the only possible swap would be to see Donnelly move into lock, as he hasn't had much time on the field since the Australia test. If Whitelock is left out, I see him being totally out of the 22 for a rest, with the most average lock in New Zealand (Boric) perhaps taking a seat on the bench. If Whitelock starts, I see Donnelly getting the bench spot, seeing as he was out of the 22 last week.

Kaino hasn't had as much game time as he'd have liked so far, so I can't see them leaving him out. McCaw will earn his 93rd Cup making him the highest capped All Black along with Mils. Read will start at 8 as usual. The bench spot for flanker will almost certainly go to Messam, as I can't see Daniel Braid getting any game time when McCaw is breaking such a mile stone, plus Messam can cover the other two loose forward positions.

Half back is almost anyones guess, but I can't see Ellis getting a starting spot, unless the coaches are high as a kite. I'd imagine they'll go with Jimmy Cowan, as I think they'll try and play it a bit safer, with Mathewson being a strong impact sub off the bench. If you have Cowan and Ellis on the team as they did on Saturday/Sunday morning, I see Carter getting the ball 2 mintues after it's left the ruck for a second match in a row.

Carter will start. If they trust Donald with a test start, then they're fools. I think Henry will actually do the right thing, and give McCaw and Muliaina a chance for a win in such a big game for them. Though Henry has made worse decisions, so there is a small change they'll start Donald, which will make O'Gara (or better yet Sexton) look like a god.

After Sonny Bill Williams has started two test matches, I think he'll give Nonu a chance to show why he is the incumbant. Nonu was the only player not sub'd on verse Scotland, so I see him getting a start. I predict a Nonu/Smith combo, which will push Sonny Bill Williams out of the 22 if Cory Jane returns. The other option, which I think is a salid one, is to try a SBW/Nonu combo, with Nonu at center. I can't see SBW moved back to Center after Saturday/Sunday's game, but I can see Nonu unleashing hell when on the front foot and receiving SBW pop passes. Maybe a bit too risky to try, and I think Smith's place is pretty solid considering he makes both of them play at their bests. Just a thought for the last untested mid field combo.

In the backline, I think Mils is a given for fullback considering it's his record breaking test. Hope he has a very good, unselfish game. I'd imagine Cory Jane will be fully fit to start on the right wing, but they may decide to keep him on the bench to make sure he's not further injured. I'm not sure if Rokocoko will be back, but I don't think he'll be in the 22. Small chance he'll start on the either wing. I'd imagine Toeava will either be starting on the right wing or be on the bench, depending on where Cory Jane is. Hosea Gear is pretty much a certainty to start at 11. The only way he wont be selected is through injury, or Henry wants to give Rokocoko a run.

Not much of a prediction, but a load of guesses. But either way, I can't see a team prepearing differently for any if the changes (unless Donald or Ellis start, in which the Irish boys will be having a booze up the night before, and placing a great deal of money on Ireland winning 12+).

England and New Zealand were reffed by the same official and he reffed the scrum the same for both teams. If you had read my last post propally what would have seen I have stated New Zealand have an international class scrum but stats show that against teams like SA and England they do not have the upper hand in this area. What other part of the game is their weakest point? The lineout? their passing? Their defence? I don't think so.

And my point is simply that England never "beat" the All Blacks - as you put it. The decisions at scrum time came about due to poor reffing. The calls made were ridiculous and that doesn't take into account the timing of the calls. Like I said, on their own ball, the All Black feeds were fine. It was only on England's feeds that they started going down. Had a class official like Jonathan Caplain been reffing you would have seen a much different outcome.

and if my aunty had a penis she'd be my uncle!

England had the upper hand that day, whether it was down to reffing, or Dan Coles being superman it doesn't matter!

I would rate New Zealands scrum in the top 5 but all i'm saying is that in my opinion I think the scrum is the weakest point in the All Blacks game I'm not saying the All Blacks have a bad scrum but every team has something there not so good at and I can't think of anything else other than the scrum. Like I said before what do you think is New Zealands weakness?

its a scary thought when the all blacks scrum is the weakest part of their game ... well come on look at that scrum!!!

ireland to lose by lots and lots sadly

Their restarts haven't always been the hottest.

Uhm.

Yeah.

I'm struggling here... play me off Johnny!

I don't think Ireland will get reamed as badly as Scotland, reckon Kidney will get conservative and send out D'Arcy, D. Wallace et al to play damage limitation and I think there's enough strength there to keep things respectable. Could be wrong though. A respectable scrum will be needed.

Fighting talk by Kearney today, he said the Irish team were capable of a performance.

Sigh.

I reckon NZ will win this, Especially with Gear and SBW in the line up.
Ireland might be a hard shell to crack but they didn't really convince last weekend.

Looks like we will see nonu & Smith back in mid field for this game. SBW back for Wales

It does sound like Elis is in line for a start, I'm a big fan of this AB coaching Trio and I agree with pretty much everything they have done but I just dont understand why they bother with Andy Elis. Mathewson looked so good when he was on the park it seems a real shame to me if he does not have a major involvement in these last two games.

Both cowan & Elis were shocking in clearing the ball against Scotland, At least Cowan does pull off some big plays on defence and the odd good kick.

A bit gutted Khan Fotualii is playing for Samoa, I'd have him in the AB's over Elis any day. I'd sooner take Leonard as well, much faster clearing the ball, far superior on defence and a much greater threat as a ball runner.

Team that looks to be selected:
1 Woody
2 Elliot
3 Franks
4 Thorn
5 Donnely
6 Kaino
7 McCaw
8 Read
9 Elis
10 Carter
11 Gear
12 Nonu
13 Smith
14 Jane
15 Mills

16 Hore
17 Afoa
18 Whitelock
19 Messam
20 Mathewson/COWAN
21 Donald
22 Toeava/SBW

Personally I'd like to see Boric given a start, obviously I'd much rather Mathewson was on the park than Elis. And Donald & Hore be given the whole 2nd half.

Carter looked really ****** off when he was taken off against Scotland. He's obviously Eying Jonny's Points record and want's to be on the park as much as he can so he can take the record before the end of the season. But I also think it's important Donald gets pleanty of gametime in these games. He can't prove himself sitting on the bench.

Will be good to see jane Back, hope he has a good game he hasn't fired in a while and will be under pressure from Toeava.

I'm not sure about how the players are being managed. It's good to give the less experienced players some game time but at the same time if it's sporadic they dont get a chance to build on their performances and apply what they have learned right away. Like Messam who slotted into the lineup really well against scotland seemed a good combination with McCaw & Read he could really build on that performance and keep improving but he will be replaced this week. And poor old Boric, I think the only thing keeping him from being a top draw lock is lack of gametime. He's only lost one of the 17 test's he's played in. he's young, a superb athelete and has a huge range of skills yet he's had to survive on scraps of gametime since his injury playing for the AB's back around june.

Gear is the lucky one, he's been put in a position because of injuries to Sivivatu and ****les to Jane & Roks that he's been able to string a few games together and the result of that is that he gets a chance to play a few weeks in a row and get used to the tempo of the game and build on each performance.

My hopeful team:
1 Woodcock
2 Elliot
3 Franks
4 Thorn
5 Whitelock
6 Kaino
7 McCaw
8 Read
9 Cowan
10 Carter
11 Gear
12 Nonu
13 Smith
14 Jane
15 Mills

16 Hore
17 Afoa
18 Donelly
19 Messam
20 Mathewson
21 Donald
22 SBW

Well Ireland will pick a predictable team, play a predictable game and have predictable excuses.
Kearney should be out, Best should be out, Hayes should be out, Leamy is possibly best option in form at 7 but won't happen, Stringer will probably be on bench and well we can pick D'Arcy or Wallace at 12 it won't matter as either will be poor.

Based on training there looks like there could be 5 changes to the AB's starting lineup - Nonu in for SBW, Jane in for Toeava, Ellis in for Cowan, Kaino in for Messem, and Donnelly in for Whitelock (http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/4352872/Sonny-Bills-All-Blacks-roadshow-headed-for-sideline).

If they do start Andy Ellis, it clearly shows they don't rate Ireland very highly ;)

Yep, it really makes the whole "we'll name the team on Thursday to keep them guessing" a bit farcical when every report so far on this tour, on who's been running where at training has been right on the money as to who ends up in the team.

They must really be concerned that Weepu won't recover by the time the RWC starts, or that the other two half backs will get injured, to be starting Andy Ellis ... I guess either of the other guys (which ever one it turns out to be) on the bench, can always come on if the worst happens ;)

I see Donnacha Ryan has been found guilty of stomping in the Samoan match, and has received a three week ban ... perhaps he should be named in the side and bracketed with someone else ... just in case he gets off on appeal :p

Another win to the AB's i would say around 15+ points.

Yeah but that was why they asked the media to cooperate - which they haven't.

Yup, I know, but it's a Journalist job to report - as if they are not going to do it just because Steve Hanson asks them not to.
