Ireland Squad 2017/18

Are we getting bogeyed here? Where is our squad?!!

Rumours that Larmour for Byrne and Cronin for Tracy are the only changes. Hopefully this entices Nugget to stick around!

In fairness. Can't argue with anything. Usually I'd be the first to slam the call ups of guys like McFadden but he's been playing well. Cronin deserves it. Only guy that may feel unlucky is Cooney. After that it hard to argue. Rory Scannell recalled deservedly

Pretty much as expected with Larmour reported to be in a few days ago I'd say. Would have brought in Cooney because I think Marmion will never grow sufficiently, but hi ho. We'd have had Scannell, Ringrose and O'Brien in if fully fit I'd imagine. Glad to see Cronin there, he's been unfairly put out in the cold this year.

Yeah, I thought Cooney might come in because he plays more like Murray than the other two but all are in very good form so the status quo will usually be stuck to in that case. Delighted for Ferg who is playing his best stuff for five years, always a favourite of mine. Its no surprise but a huge statement bringing Larmour in, Schmidt doesn't like new players in his 6 nations squad and his squad is as settled as ever. That squad could do something huge if we don't **** up Paris!

Spills beer in to remember Ulster's competence.

Ross Byrne, Cooney and JO'D probably the only players who can feel like they were better, or less injured, than guys ahead of them but all are close calls. Maybe Treadwell too or is he out?

I'd like to see that v France, I reckon the starting XV will be that but I could see Herring, Conan and Marmion taking bench spots.

Yeah have to agree. Like only calls that would be iffy if even that. John Ryan. But he's there as Schmidt likes him and is fully aware his lack of game time is medically linked and he's easily capable of the shift required.
Cooney is unlucky but well there is no real off form 9 so it comes down to opinions or preference.
Carbery over Byrne is debatable based on fitness etc.
Rest actually looking at it picks itself

Aye, I was thinking Byrne for Carbery, Byrne isn't good enough to replace Keatley with both stepping up their games again this season. JC will get at best a run off the bench since the Fiji match prior to the 6n but Carbery is such a young and natural talent rustiness won't effect him yet.

Agree with you here. I think John Ryan is a little lucky to be in the squad. I like him a lot as a player but feel Finlay Bealham is more deserving of a place in the squad. Ryan is the better scrummager but Bealham offers more around the park.

Rory Scannell instead of Stuart McCloskey is a talking point. Right decision in my view. McCloskey offers go forward ball but seems to go missing for periods of the game. For example, after he makes a good carry or tackle, he doesn't bust a gut to get back into the right position. Scannell is the better option if Ireland want to put width on the game.

Hopefully Kieran Treadwell comes back from this omission. In truth his form doesn't merit selection. Alan O'Connor is also ahead of him right now and Tadhg Beirne will parachute ahead of him too.

Happy for Fergus McFadden. I almost wrote him off a few months ago. Delighted I was so wrong. He's in brilliant form. Not as big an attacking force as other wingers available but he's always reading defensive situations brilliantly.

Ross Byrne can feel a bit hard done by but that's about it. As predicted, and that's a good thing. We're missing a few really good players but still look strong. Very good position to be in.

On Bealham he's ruled out from injury I think. But on it again it an opinion thing like not massive difference between them.

On Scannell I don't think it is a talking point Rory is flying it and will offer good going forward ball and has more bows to his game.

On lock I think Treadwell has gone in to reverse unfortunately.

On McFadden thing he has deserved spot as I've watched Leinster a bit and to be fair he has played well

Strong squad, the only player who'll feel really disappointed is Cooney. All the other ommisions are completely understandable. He'd have been a great addition for the squad especially for his place-kicking which could have been important if we end up going with Carbery on the bench. How we rank McGrath, Cooney and Marmion from 2nd-4th is provably irrelevant in the end though. Murray will have the lion's share if the game time whatever happens. (Unless he's injured.)

I'm a bit disappointed for Byrne but he doesn't really bring anything the other three don't, whereas Carbery is the only genuine running 10 in the country.

The fight for the 18 jersey is going to be very interesting over the next few years. Ryan, Porter and Bealham are all in with a shout. It'll be interesting to see if Moore can get himself involved when he comes back.

John Muldoon has announced he'll retire at the end of the season. Despite only getting three caps, he qualifies as a legend of Irish rugby and has been Connacht's greatest ever servant for 14 years. Glad he got a trophy in his career and will leave Connacht a far stronger club than he found it.

Would've got alot more recognition if he moved to another province but he was loyal and got his day in Pro12 final. A true legend and warrior but above all a gent in every sense of the word.
And was a top top player even in bad times he stood out

Legend. He can be very proud of his career and as others have said, he got his day in the Pro12 final and nobody else deserved it more.

Anyone think Schmidt will make any non-injury forced rotation? I could see McFadden, Conway and/or Stockdale on rotation. 14. Stockdale 23. Conway for home games and 14. Conway 23. McFadden for the away ones would be what I could see happening, its something he did very successfully when with Ster. Could see the same with Healy (home) and McGrath (away) and then there's plenty of possible variation in the backrow too. This is the strongest and most comfortable Irish squad I have ever seen (I think the 2016 Autumn starting XV was probably better with a lot of players in career form) and I think Schmidt has the liberty to rotate far more than he has had at any other stage of his Irish career. I hope to see something like this a squad of 30 odd players who can rotate seamlessly, bar some obvious irreplaceable players, is needed come 2019.

Ireland U20s to senior.

Players who have played regularly for a province or who looks certain to IMO ie Frawley.

Bolded players are those with more than 10 cap or those who are certain to get there ie Stocdale, James Ryan etc.

Players in the current wider squad who either were too old, not qualified for the Ireland U20s, injured or just not selected. Aki, Best, Sean Cronin, James Cronin, Earls, Healy, Henshaw, Herring, Keatley, Kilcoyne, McCloskey, McFadden, SOB, TOD, Quinn Roux, John Ryan, Sexton, Stander, Toner, Payne.

Looks like we're playing Italy in Chicago before the Autumn test window. Good extra opportunity to play the likes of Carbery and Larmour against tier 1 and a half opposition. It also means that we'll break the tier 1 consecutive winning test match record when we beat NZ a couple weeks later.
