Inauspicious start from Howley

as people have stated above i think howley was making a snide comment about some players who were well aware they could be captured by the law but still chose to leave or sign a new contract then try to appeal when its decided they will captured (north). the charteris example is fine by me, apparently the reason he is not captured is because he already agreed a deal with bath before any region approached him. north outright signed a new contract with the saints even though he knew he would be captrued (as he would have had to have had an offer from a welsh region to be captured)

TBF i could see a argument from players who signed to a club before Gatlands law wanting to remain at said club and continue playing international rugby, some players really do get invested in the area etc.

It's quite harsh on them TBF.

Although looking at the loopholes it should be wuite easy to avoid such as signing an extension with said club before a region is interested in you.

I suspect Owen Williams might move but i also suspect he wouldn't get an offer from WRU, so it could well be below market value.

TBH whilst I think the rules are good for Welsh Rugby any player who has not moved club since they were announced should be exempt. New contracts be damned there are a whole bunch of outside influences to why you might not want to move.

An example I know of a player in County Cricket who has turned down chances to play for test-counties (and thus increase his chances of playing international cricket) simply because of all his family and friends live in his home county.

Just saying once a player moves somewhere there's a reason he might want to stay, admittedly player that have moved since the announcment that's thier own damn fault and you'll get no sympathy from me.

I've not made my mind up about "Gatlands Law" (or about the Irish law that is impacting on their overseas players). I agree that Howley could have phrased it better. "Selfish" is a word with negative connotations and there is no point getting players' back up just because they have taken a potentially very sensible decision based on personal matters. If he uses language like that it makes it easier for players considering leaving the Pro12 to rationalise it in their head. The phrase "well sod you then!" comes to mind if I was a player weighing up my future.

Despite overtures/veiled threats to get Ross Moriarty to move to a Welsh Region he appears to be exempt (or at least he hasn't been mentioned) - I assume this is because he hasn't changed clubs?

Don't really understand it all tbh (as previous posts may indicate :)).
