In the cold light of day...
First, that is as much my guess as my opinion. Anscombe is on an expiring contract. Nothing has been done about it. The objective was a home quarter final and the guys with their finger on the button aren't exactly known for their clemency. I'm going to guess that Humph snr has a fairly good idea if there's someone better around, put it that way, and would have been pretty quick with the contract if he thought there definitely wasn't.
My opinion... Anscombe was brought in to take us a step beyond McGlock's effort. I'm not sure he's done that and the fact that we've done well with two coaches of no great pedigree suggests to me that replacing him wouldn't be the biggest risk in the world, although then again we are about to take a major hit in strength with no Court/Afoa/Muller(?). I would say his tactics are very lateral and can frequently lead to problems and the lack of backbone shown when the big men are away is quite alarming. Our lack of ability at some of the basics of forward play is also quite alarming. How much do we blame him for not being able to make a silk purse out of a pig's ear? I don't know. But then how much do we credit him for playing youngsters when that was the squad Humph left him, or for work that may have more to do with specialist coaches and the voice of wise Seth Efrikans? Again, I don't know.
I am at the stage where I am ambivalent. There have been some excellent matches and some woeful ones. I am not certain he is the man to get the best out of this squad. No doubt he's a good coach but is he a great coach? It's near impossible to say for sure but he is not making his case in the big games as things stand - although if that changes next game, I would consider the facts to have changed as well.
So let me refine my stance. In Humph I trust - if he thinks he should stay, then fine, and if not, then also fine. My gut instinct is that Humph's decision rests very much on next week's game.
