Because he isn't going up to challenge the ball he is running, and if you don't have the rule then people will take out players in the air and necks will get broken.Tbh I get that it was a red but I don't agree with the rule. It's not like a tackle situation where the player has the ball and therefore the tackler is responsible for bringing him back to earth. In a kick situation the ball is free for all and their safety should be their own responsibility. If you don't want to take the chance of possibly colliding dangerously in the air then don't jump. Payne had his eyes on the ball arms reached up. I don't see how the other player should be his responsibility as his focus is the ball.

No but you can't tackle a player in the air, which is the rule he broke.So to compete you must jump?
If you don't think the safety of your fellow players is as much your responsibility as theirs then you have absolutely no business on the field.
