HEC P5: ASM Clermont Auvergne v Leinster Rugby

McFadden is a decent player.
Certainly not lacking in guts.

Thirteen to go, really looking forward to this and the match next week.

Clermont are really not playing very well. Leinster need to cut out the stupid mistakes, and stop sending their backs onto crash balls.

- If Rob Kearney was there, Leinster win that.
- If Strauss hadn't had an off day with the throw, Leinster win that.

Good hard game. Maybe not the flashiest, but what a contest.

Great intense game impressed with the Leinster boys in particular McFadden gutsy performance if i've ever seen one.

Just switched on for the end... why did Clermont put the ball out there at the end? They had a penalty on the Leinster 5 metre line, I don't think Leinster could have ran the entire length of the pitch... they must be fairly confident that they can get a result next week or they'll look a bit silly to not press for a try at the end there.

He didn't know the clock had ticket over thought there was time for a line out

Leinster have to get the bonus point while denying Clermont next week to win the pool me thinks. Which after watching this game is very doable, especially at Lansdowne road.

And you predicted Clermont by 20...

It did look as if Leinster played a good game today but thats a pretty bold prediction at this stage. You've got Exeter away(it could have been a draw in the home fixture) which won't be easy, whereas Clermont have them at home, which dare I say it should be a 5 pointer bearing in mind they put 46 on them away from the Michelin. Then theres the simple matter of putting a load of points on Clermont next week whilst denying them the bonus....

Really liked the look of Goodman, looks like a powerful character.

Cannot see Leinster scoring 4 tries next week though, surely? I think its possible to deny Clermont the BP, but to score 4 tries would be impressive considering the intensity of the defence today.

Next week we must deny the bouns to Clermont, and then i feel we need to pick up bonus at Exter and against the scarlets, sounds tough but remember we'll have BOD and Kearney back for those game i think. First next week is a massive game.

Meh. Win next week, win the other two games. Gives us 21 points. Should be enough to qualify. A bonus point would be nice too, but after Biarritz losing to Connacht there's less danger of +20 not being enough.

1 Ulster player in the Lions Index. Lovely.

Edit: Is the Index from the start or just from that weekend?

As the cliché goes, the first 4 points are bonus points. Leinster can't get carried away chasing 4 tries. Without O'Driscoll, Kearney and Fitzgerald, their cutting edge is seriously diminished. Leinster have the beating of ASM from 1-10. That's where they should concentrate their efforts. A win by more than 7 points should be the aim. Then hope Scarlets can sneak a result against Clermont in Llanelli while the returning O'Driscoll, Kearney and Fitzgerald increase Leinster's fire power for rounds 5 and 6. Exeter away won't be easy.
