Friday
Leinster v Cardiff - 19:35
Edinburgh v Dragons - 19:35

Saturday
Glasgow v Ospreys - 15:15
Treviso v Ulster - 18:05
Munster v Cheetahs - 17:05
Connacht v Kings - 19:35

Ulster to grab the only away win. No narrative this week lads, I need more material to create storylines!

It's bad enough I can't find the beautiful Zebre badge to select on TRF without you then airbrushing them from history Alpha! Wait 12 months then you can do these threads without mention of Zebre. :(

Tie of the round -

Sat 9th @ 2035hrs
Zebre vs Scarlets (live and exclusive on S4C!)

Join Zebre in their quest to hold on to a coveted 5th place in Conference A. By Jove I think they have a shot!

Leinster, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Munster, Ulster, Connacht and Scarlets for the win. Think there'll be any upsets?

Ospreys could take Glasgow but, I wouldn't call that an upset and I don't predict it.

Dragons could be an upset against Edinburgh given Edinburgh's limitations offensively.

Kings could be an upset in Connacht if conditions are perfect and Connacht don't play ToH. If it is the same weather as last week I can't wait to see the Kings players faces as they reconsider their careers!

And I will be upset after the Scarlets have rag-dolled Zebre. I can't believe how handy they looked without DTH, Liam Williams and JD2. *gulp*

Just as a matter of interest how good are Connacht?
So if Tier 1 is the top 4 teams.
Tier 2 is the next 4.
Tier 3 is the remainder with Tier 4 being the complete no hopers.

Considering the players we lost and the long season we've already had I'd consider a successful season being between 6-12 wins out of 24. Our goal should really be to beat the Italians, grab a few victories at home and perhaps pull off a cheeky away upset or two. I'm not expecting too much but I'd like us to be competitive against the Tier 3 sides and perhaps challenge the Tier 2 sides at least in this first year.

Champions two seasons ago but after losing a good lock and out half they struggled and only managed 7th last year. I'd expect a few teething problems with the new coach as well and their back three, while electric, make tonnes of mistakes. I'd back them against the Kings at home though.

OK sweet, in that case I'd just like a better scoreline than last week.

We need to work on three things basically, set-piece (specifically line-outs), break down work and defense.

A 10 point deficit and putting up a fight would make me happy.

I think Connacht looked okay against Glasgow last week, and quite a better than last year. I think they'll finish 4th or 5th in their conference so they are a pretty stern test. They are decent in the frequently awful conditions at home but can also play really expansive in better conditions.

Losing Henshaw to Leinster at the end of their championship year broke up the centre partnership with Bundee Aki and they haven't been remotely as free flowing as they were that year.

Marmion, ToH and Aki would fit in almost any 23 in the tournament (and in my opinion an international Irish 23) and their wingers; although less consistent, can be outstanding on their day if given the ball in dangerous locations. They are the minnows of Irish rugby and used to be as bad as the Italians, so they are easy for a neutral to root for.

If you were to divide up the original Pro12 sides into tiers it would probably look like
Tier 1, Scarlets, Leinster, Munster, Glasgow, Ulster, Ospreys.
Tier 2, Connacht, Cardiff, Edinburgh.
Tier 3, Dragons, Zebre, Treviso.

Thats a bit over simplified but its roughly like that. We'll see where the Cheetahs and Kings fit in as the season goes on. Don't the Cheetahs play at altitude? If so I can see it being a big advantage especially with teams not used to that or the heat.

As for Connacht. They've a new coach in Kieran Keane, the Chiefs attack coach last season. The won the league against all odds 2 seasons ago but have slipped back since though they're dangerous opposition on their day.

The weather for the weekend is not looking too good for Galway and Limerick which is nearby so it might be another experience for the Kings and Cheetahs.

Thanks for the info @profitius .

Yeah Cheetahs do play at altitude and the pitches tend to be hard and fast, South African summer is arriving as well so games in Bloemfontein should be interesting. It'll either be hard, flat and hot (35+ temperatures in Bloem in the summer) or there will be an afternoon thunderstorm on.

The Kings play at the coast, so the climate is more moderate and obviously no altitude, the weather will still mostly be good in summer though.

The home games for both teams will be interesting, but first and foremost we have to compete in the British Isles if we want to actually justify our inclusion.
If the weather does get sh%te, I expect the Kings will cope with it a bit better than the Cheetahs, they have a slightly more structured game plan and play decently in bad weather. The Cheetahs should be worse off since they prefer an unstructured game. Both teams are probably lacking reliable kickers though.

Too early to pass any judgements yet, I guess we'll know if the Saffer sides bring anything to the table in 5-10 games time.

This thread was so late I thought we would go past this weekends action in silence.

I don't know why but Connacht does not strike me as a good team. I have not seen them play and I don't know what players they have so no judgment based on those two aspects but I get this feeling about them for some reason that they are a shite team by pro 14 standards.
Anyway I'm sure that my suspicions are wrong probably so don't read too much into my rant.

Munster will probably win against the Cheetahs. Two very difficult games for the Cheetahs to start off with. Away against two of the strongest sides in the comp.
but I do think that the home ground will massively Favour them the pro 14 natives will have to change their style of play in a city such as Bloemfontein. If you kick too much you will be destroyed on the counter.

As for the Kings home games. The only thing that will be exceptional is the summer heat. Otherwise the conditions should be completely bearable.

I think I will support Ulster as my second team in the Pro 14 even though SuperSport won't be televiseing non sa games this year.

Any team with those two SA flankers in will have my vote for 2nd team. Must admit that after the first round played out in my dreams with a Cheetah win, I called for them to lose this round, being of sound mind and such......

Leinster Rugby (Leinster caps in brackets):

15. Rob Kearney (186)
14. Adam Byrne (22)
13. Rory O'Loughlin (22)
12. Isa Nacewa (171) CAPTAIN
11. Jordan Larmour (1)
10. Ross Byrne (24)
9. Luke McGrath (75)
1. Cian Healy (173)
2. James Tracy (43)
3. Michael Bent (88)
4. Devin Toner (199)
5. Scott Fardy (1)
6. Rhys Ruddock (131)
7. Josh van der Flier (47)
8. Jack Conan (52)

Replacements

16. Seán Cronin (129)
17. Ed Byrne (8)
18. Andrew Porter (9)
19. Mick Kearney (21)
20. Dan Leavy (40)
21. Nick McCarthy (8)
22. Cathal Marsh (19)
23. Barry Daly (11)

Slight improvement from last week with Luke McGarth coming in for JGP, should be more than enough to win at home, especially considering our next home loss in this competition is due in 2019.

Brace is the ref for this one, this neutral refs promise seems to be a loada shite!

Oh, I didn't know SS aren't televising non-SA games. I guess I probably wouldn't get round to those in any case. In my mind I'm 1 Cheetahs, 2 Kings, 3 Ulster and probably won't get to 3 Pro 14 games, 1 CC game and two tests in a weekend.. probably just 1 of each for me so I guess SS aren't missing anything as yet while we 'feel it out' this season. I wonder whether they'd consider important non-SA matches towards the business end of the season..

Any team with those two SA flankers in will have my vote for 2nd team. Must admit that after the first round played out in my dreams with a Cheetah win, I called for them to lose this round, being of sound mind and such......

I'm not overly concerned. We're gonna be 0/2 but TBH that is two games the Cheetahs probably would lose in any case so good games to get out of the way while they wait on their Bokke and injured flyhalves and get used to a new coach and playing conditions. I'd be unhappy if they didn't start picking up from round 3 though. Home to Zebre..

I know Bruce will say Zebre aren't shib but in context I expect them to not have what it takes to come away with a hope in Bloem. Or at least I'd be extremely.. beyond extremely surprised if they did.

We're all part of Jono's* Army...
and we're all off to Italy
we could have won the cup,
but lacey fúcked it up**
'cos Ulster are an average rugby team

Before the horseground bound bwankers in ballsbridge take it as their own. I reckon with the boom times coming again (thanks Angela) their daddies could afford my ridiculously high royalty fees.
