France v Scotland

Looks like Hines won't be back sooner than expected afterall, BBC are saying he's been ruled out after it was announced he'll undergo exploratory surgery. Euan Murray though may be back for Scotland for the visit of Italy at the end of the month.

What about the Yves Donguy fellow I've been hearing about? Is he fit? In the training squad even? Man, I'm so behind since we lost Sky, but yeah, surely he should make an appearance for France soon.

Anyway, my XV;

1. Alan Jacobsen (*facepalm*, shortage of props)
2. Ross Ford - Good strong mobile hooker, does a similar job to Szwarzetski so I guess it would be a good counterbalance
3. Allastair Dickinson - (*facepalm*) we need a good scrum, he can't offer that, but he's agile...but with Jacobsen on the field we'll have a lot of scrums to deal with.
4. Simon Taylor - Another back row on the field, we'll have our hands full, good lineout man also.
5. Nathan Hines (if fit)/Ally Kellock - Both solid, Hines has experience with French players, Kellock is a good man to go to if he's not fit.
6. Allastair Strock...(I'm not going to try) - I hope he was too busy fighting bears to play rugby last week, that's the only reasonable excuse.
7. John Barclay - Not the kind of player we need at 7, we need Ross Rennie at 7.
8. Ally Hogg - Swapping around in the scrum with 6 depending where we are on the field.
9. Chris Cusiter - To keep Mike Blair on his toes.
10. Phil Godman - If he gets better ball this week, we'll see what he can do
11. Thom Evans - He should have been banging some supermodel or helping Strock with aforementioned bear slaughter.
12. Graham Morrison - Better ball for 10 is better ball for 12. Also play a left and right game so we're not smashing up the same channel.
13. Max Evans - Can break the line, score tries. He won't be as useful in the same position, he'll catch the 10/12 channel like BOD did last week but could take wingers on the outside too if pushed.
14. Sean Lamont - Websters dead, Dannielli is accident prone and Paterson would be more useful as a replacement 10 or 15.
15. Hugo Southwell - Good game with the boot, bad day with ball in hand, less kicking, more running. He's shown himself to be a dangerous fullback, on par with Lee Byrne at times, he could do with every week with the right support and coaching.

16. Dougie Hall - No other option
17. Moray Low - Decent player, would get good education from the French pack. Jacobsen will be out of puff by 50 minutes.
18. Ally Kellock/Jim Hamilton - see above for both
19. Scott Gray - Exciting prospect at 7, probably learned a lot from last week, he'll come in with gusto and maybe not give away penalties.
20. Mike Blair - He'll come on at 60 minutes and we'll do something special...I know it.
21. Chris Paterson - Replacement 10 and 15 only, if Hugo is playing like he was last week, shift him in at 15 and give the French something to worry about, maybe try a drop goal...it's a more exciting way of reminding us of our 3 times table. In at 10 at aforementioned halfback change. It's a good idea to have 2 halfback teams, as it were.
22. Ben Cairns/Rob Dewey - Max Evans can play wing or it could be a straight swap. Dewey for Morrison at some point, Rob Dewey is a good player, I know from first hand experience, he destroyed me a few years ago when he played against me. He was playing for some Fife team, can't remember what one, but yeah, if Morrison isn't cutting it in midfield he'd be a good guy to bring in. Fast, strong, plays 12 and 13 so fits into the gameplan above perfectly.

Sorry I'm ranting, I'm procrastinating.
22.

Southwell on a par with Byrne at times, I know Byrne had a couple of bad kicks on Sunday but even if he was like that for the whole game he'd still be streets ahead of Southwell.

Absoloutely, Byrne is miles ahead of Southwell who is well behind Rory Lamont for a start. Paterson has to start at Fullback, he offers more than Southwell in attack and of course is a flawless goal kicker.

Donguy is fine with Toulouse, but to my mind he is nowhere near the international level. He's a winger and at least Clerc, Rougerie, Malzieu, Heymans, Medard, Saubade, Arias ... are better than him and I'm probably forgetting some.

France have called up Thomas Domingo as 23rd man after Lionel Faure was ruled out with a calf injury.

Scotland XV: 15. Hugo Southwell (Edinburgh), 14. Simon Danielli (Ulster), 13. Max Evans (Glasgow Warriors), 12. Graeme Morrison (Glasgow Warriors), 11. Thom Evans (Glasgow Warriors), 10. Phil Godman (Edinburgh), 9. Mike Blair (Edinburgh) CAPTAIN, 1. Allan Jacobsen (Edinburgh), 2. Ross Ford (Edinburgh), 3. Alasdair Dickinson (Gloucester), 4. Jason White (Sale), 5. Jim Hamilton (Edinburgh), 6. Alasdair Strokosch (Gloucester), 7. John Barclay (Glasgow Warriors), 8. Simon Taylor (Paris)

Substitutes: 16. Dougie Hall (Glasgow Warriors), 17. Moray Low (Glasgow Warriors), 18. Kelly Brown (Glasgow Warriors), 19. Scott Gray (Glasgow Warriors), 20. Chris Cusiter (Perpignan), 21. Chris Paterson (Edinburgh), 22. Nick De Luca (Edinburgh)

So good to see both Evans coming into the side, not sure about Danielli getting the nod over Paterson, didn't think he'd been playing a huge amount for Ulster.

Definetely a better selection than last week but having Dickinson who isnt a tighthead instead of Low who is seems daft. The scrum will be in real trouble again unfortunately.

Danielli's been injured for quite a while but played really well on his first match back against Stade Francais. Pretty dissapointed to see De Luca on the bench instead of Cairns. NDL is overated, very poor hands, gives away alot of daft penalties and his decision making is dodgy to. But yea backline better, forwards still so so..

yeah but your hands are tied with the forwards, who else is that could/should come in???

So Mermoz to come into the side now that Fritz has been suspended or will Baby get the nod? Been more impressed with Mermoz recently.

Craig Smith always impressed me, especially in the loose...I think he's out of the international picture.
Gavin Kerr would be a good lad to call on, not a first choice by any standards but still, better than Dickinson...more experienced too.

Lievremont apparently said before the hearing result that Baby will start instead of Fritz with Mermoz on the bench.

I thought that Dickinson wasn't a tighthead (and if he is then he had a very poor game in the scrum on Sunday), and if he isn't I would rather play Muray Low (I know he is a looshead as well[I can feel my arguement falling here]) but I beleive he is more competent at tightead.

At this point I should point out I'm not a front rowe, except in dire emergencies.

Can't have too many complaints with that team. Would have started Paterson ahead of T. Evans, if only for the fact his boot will probably be the main source of points for us on Saturday. I hope that we're moving away from using Morrison as a crash ball every time, it completley negates the space of the man at 13 (whether it be Cairns or Evans). Not too happy about NDL being on the bench though. I thought that while he's really good for Edinburgh, he's more often than not to in awe at international level. I'd like to think that Godman will get better ball this week and he'll be able to use Evans correctly. Let's play keep ball, slow pick and drives for a lot of phases, the suddenly spin it wide to catch them napping....that'd be the best way for us right now I feel.

Shame we're struggling for props, but given Moray Low hasn't had a cap yet it would be a bit fool hardy to through him in at the deep end. Dickinson's scrumaging is suspect, but we cannot possibly sacrafice his work rate in the loose. I felt that part of the problem on Sunday was that too many of our fowards were being lazy. Perhaps this is the same reason why Hogg has been dropped. I actaully think Hogg has suffered being too big. He just seems to lack the ability to carry himself around the pitch for 80minutes, and his attitude doesn't seem to be nearly as good as it should be. Strokosh has been a revelation for us, and arguably Gloucester too. Shouldn't have been dropped from the first game, glad he's starting. I want to see Rennie get a shot again before the championship is out, and create a bit of serious competition for Barclay, but I wouldn't start him. Half backs, again good choice. Perhaps cusiter should get a start before the championship is out, Blair might be needing a kick up the arse. Though a scrum half is no good behind a pack going backwards. Glad to see Dan Parks isn't in the 22 again.

All in all, a better choice. But i just wonder if we'll struggle to get points without Paterson kicking the points.

Can I just get something straight? This is Benoit Baby isn't it?! Southwell was interviewed on Sky earlier and mentioned the attacking flair of Jeujean Baby... Now am I being stoopd and missed something, or has he just made someone up?

Yep, Benoit Baby. I'd rather have Maxime Mermoz though, very impressive with Usap.

Mermoz is on top form that's true. But from what I read, Lievremont will probably give some rest to Beauxis in the second half, which means Baby will play 10 and Mermoz will play 13. So fingers crossed we'll see him in Stade de France.

Where did you read that?
Might be a good thing though, but I'm not too sure about Baby's capacity to be an international 10... Mermoz + Jauzion should be cool.
