I just got the old "broken" family computer out of the attic and resored it so I can have my own laptop.
I completed a simple task on a computer with huge help from the internet and I feel like a ****ing genius.

How old is it? Part of me would recommend that for an old comp you look at putting google's OS on it or a similar cloud based linux distro, but then again, for the linux in particular it may be a struggle to get proper support should you have a problem.

I would also like to announce that Cmac and I have recently discovered we are related. You see my mothers cousin is married to his fathers uncle. Practically brothers. I'm planning on photoshopping myself into all of his family portraits.

About 7-8 years. My dad had a load of Windows 7 software lying about that he got for work but never used so I just got that off him. Works pretty well, a bit slow online at times but that could be eircom.

What's the memory on it? Just a heads up, Windows 7 is a fine operating system for about 4 months and then slows down like **** unless you're carrying about 4gb in my experience. 7 or 8 years is a push for it I reckon, but you might get away with it.

I reckon I'll be ok I'll only be using it for about 9-12 months anyway (Hoping to get a laptop for my 18th) and I'm not going to be doing too much on it anyway, I'm using it mainly to reduce the amount of laptop related arguments.
